Are placement matches going to be changed/reworked to be less easily abused?

There are three major problems:

  1. Placements don't seem to take last season's MMR into account. A boosted Diamond V player who maintained 0 LP Diamond V with 42% win rate will be given the same placements as a Diamond V player with 60% win rate.

  2. Your placement starting point doesn't seem to decay. If I do my placements at the end of the season, I will place into the same tier I would have if I had done them at the start of the season, regardless of how much MMR has inflated during the season.

  3. You can duo queue on a new account to ensure you get placed in high Platinum, without needing a high win rate. This makes boosting insanely easy. Platinum I to Diamond V is saturated by extremely toxic Chinese players who are doing this; you encounter one or two of them in almost every game.

The first point is problematic in that it ensures Platinum remains saturated by boosted players. It's extremely hard to drop out, because even if you're playing in a game well above your skill level, you'll still be carried often enough to hold 4X% win rate, and it will take hundreds of games before you drop to an appropriate level.

The second point actively punishes players who want to maintain their rank, and instead promotes not playing until the end of the season, especially for Diamond players. I want to sit at Diamond V until the end of the season, but I don't want to play more than I have to, because the majority of games at this MMR are full of incredibly toxic or boosted players, and I don't enjoy the state of balance.

I stopped playing for a few months after reaching Diamond V at the start of the season and decayed to Platinum IV; after coming back, MMR inflation put my MMR around Platinum III, and I had to play another 60-70 games to get back to Diamond V. It would have been better for me to just not play at all until the season was ending, as decay doesn't set in until after placements. Because I played early, I have to consistently continue playing, or MMR will inflate around me.

The third point is a major issue that makes boosting new accounts to Diamond trivial, see the first point. It also contributes to the number of extremely toxic players, because they aren't worried about getting banned; they can just grab a new account, duo with a high Diamond friend through placements, and be back to Diamond on their new level 30 account in 50-60 games, without even having to maintain a high win rate.

This system is pretty terrible and probably should have been fixed in earlier seasons.

They need to hard reset every ones rank and MMR.

Remove anything other then SoloQ

Make all new to Rank start at Rank 0 with 0 MMR

The game has been "Gamed" to much over the years. Boosting/Smurfing/Duo all ruin how rank works.

Its needs a hard reset. Then Rank should be by Role like they are doing.

How do you propose to fix these issues? Lets say you have 4 diamond 5 accounts:

  1. A boosted account with 80% winrate (player paid for boost and than didn't play much)
  2. A boosted account with 50% winrate (player paid for boost and then tanked winrate down to 50)
  3. An unboosted account with 80% winrate (smurf)
  4. An unboosted account with 50% winrate (regular account)

What mathematical formula would you use which would apply to all 4 accounts would sort them into the correct bracket? As far as I am aware, there aren't any matchmaking formulas that do a good job of accounting for both the general public and boosters at the same time. Boosters need to be taken care of by ban waves.

The main problem is duo'ing through placements. The goal is only to make it take longer than a couple of days to boost a fresh 30 account to Diamond, leaving more time for them to be detected and limiting the impact on low Diamond.

An easy solution is to just not allow duo queue in placements; that way, the boosted account places into maybe Gold if it goes 10-0, and then still has to play a couple hundred games to get to Diamond. Right now, they place into mid Platinum and only need maybe a week worth of games at slightly above 50% win rate to hit Diamond.

The other issues can be solved by factoring MMR into placements/decaying placements as the season progresses. Someone who is inactive for 10 months before doing placements should be treated the same as someone who did placements and then became inactive. A boosted player with 80% win rate who isn't active and a boosted player with 50% win rate should be around the same; the inactive player doesn't keep up with MMR inflation and the other has tanked their MMR.

This will help get the boosted players out of Diamond and improve game quality; I think a large part of the problem right now is that Diamond V is full of unskilled players who can't drop out of it and only play enough games to prevent decay, then the next season rolls over, and these players are all thrown into the pool with actual Diamond players. It makes the game more of a coin flip and climbing becomes a clusterfuck, because there are often boosted players on each team cancelling each other out.

My first ranked game in two weeks has three Chinese boosters abusing this. This is really insane.

They need to do a hard reset
