Thematic confusion: What (or who) is Galio?

I just played Galio and I just have to say... WTF? Ok, I get that the character was designed in 2010, but somehow it feels like nothing has been ever done since then. I could wonder if Riot has simple forgotten his existence recently (well, no one's playing him for ages, wouldn't be a susprise - even I forgot that he actually exists at some point). Actually, I think a full Sion-Scale-Rework is needed - especially if we consider that Galio is the demacian mirror-image to Sion in some kind of way.

The confusion starts already within his gameplay pattern: What IS he? A mage? A tank? A fighter? Some kind of badly designed AP Bruiser?

Why is his ultimate ability (and his Bulwark) making him eat basic attacks when he's supposed to stack MR?

And why is every single bit of his kit so totally clunky to use?

Okok, let's take a step back and look at his lore, wich I will copy here since probably no one has ever read it recently:

Long before the League's regulation of such magic, mages experimented with the creation of artificial life. Now forbidden, instilling golems with reason was once not so uncommon a practice amongst the more expert of craftsmen. One such visionary was the Demacian artificer, Durand. Peerless at crafting sentient beings, Durand's constructs served as tireless guardians for the border towns of his beloved city-state, affording them protection from their Noxian neighbors. For his own defense, however, Durand kept his magnum opus: Galio. This mighty construct - forged in the image of a gargoyle - kept him safe on his journeys, allowing him to perform his important work without fear of reprisal from those hostile to his homeland. That is, until dealing with his taxing sentinels finally roused the ire of the Noxian High Command.

As Durand crossed the Howling Marsh with his masterwork in tow, he was set upon by Noxian assassins in force. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, Galio looked on in horror as the murderers cut down his charge, executing him swiftly before vanishing back into the mists. Stripped of his reason for being, Galio despaired. For years he remained in solitude, standing vigil over the bones of the master he had failed to protect... a literal monument to his own everlasting shame. Then, one nondescript day, a sad but determined yordle girl carrying a mighty Demacian crown stopped in the shadow of a great statue to rest. Hidden in plain sight from his unsuspecting visitor, Galio studied the forlorn yordle. She looked as though she too shouldered a tremendous burden. As quietly and as stoically as she had arrived, she departed in the direction of Demacia. This encounter lit a spark in Galio's eye. Remembering the cause that his master had died defending, Galio arose from his silent purgatory and followed in the wake of this brave creature. He had a new reason to live: to join the League of Legends and fight for the will of Demacia.

As we can see, first problem: League doesn't exist since the retcon, yet it's mentioned. Ok, let's break it down what his theme seems to be:

  • Demacian (Blue/Gold, Honor, Rightousness blah blah)
  • Protector/Bodyguard/Guardian
  • Golem (Wich is obvious since he's a living stone figure) with some kind of sentinence. He could be compared to Sion in some kind of way. The big guy is being controlled without knowing, Galio is ruled by his initial programming, but doesn't question it (I wonder if he's even able to). The only time he doesn't follow it he simply does nothing for years... I wonder who of them is to pity more...
  • Flying (ok that's not from the lore, but kinda not used, yet unique. Galio is one of the rare champions that can actually fly, yet none of his abilities take on that concept. The only champ who actually uses his wings with his abilties is Aatrox... This remembers me that Kayle really needs a rework too...you know, an higher being from another dimension should be able to do more than to beat people with a fire stick... but more about that in another thread.)

Aaaaand that's it. Not really much but we should be able to work with this. Actually, with this you could work out enough to make his current kit on the live servers seem like the worst waste of potential ever. Now, some thoughts to how his theme is supposed to be translated. Although he's supposed to be a protector his powers are directed to smashing down the enemy before he can even come close to the protected target - A point that is typically demacian btw: use a preemtive strike to kill everything that is "evil" then proceed ignoring the question if that was the morally right thing to do, because "What we do is right!". Ugh somehow Noxus seems less and less "evil" now that I think about it...

Ok, back to topic. But turning him into a simple brawler wouldn't fit. While he needs to be a fighter he needs ALSO to be like Braum, interacting with his teammates who he actually has to protect. Basicially we need a offensive defender... but how?

Before diving into possible ability kits I think we need to clear out first what he IS. Is here ANYONE on the boards who mains Galio so he could help us out? Comeon, there has to be at least ONE Galio-Main... (wouldn't be surprised if there was none actually).

Ok boards, let's do this! Let us give the old champ the attention he desperatly needs!

He uses his wings with his E.

Also, he's a tank. Galio's purpose is essentially Amumu's, which is to make or break a team fight with his ult. You build him tank, however because of his passive, some of his tanky stats are converted into AP. This combined with his high base damage on his q and alright damage on e, he becomes a tank that can deal out some good damage. He's supposed to be used to counterpick AP champions mid, but isn't because yes, he is clunky and "why play champion x when champion y does it better" i.e amumu who can instantly gap close to use his instant ult, rather than galio who has to try and run his way to the enemy team, even with speed boosts, with an ult that can be disrupted by a well timed CC. Also, his mana costs are abysmal in lane. Overall, he's an old champion that is a niche pick. He will work sometimes, and honestly you'll probably win lane vs an ap, but the game itself will be harder to win. But, build him tank with maybe a couple AP items like Abyssal Scepter and UG.

More than anything else, he's a mage that uses melee attacks. That makes it a very deadly prospect to try and damage the enemy's turret or inhibitor, or poke the enemy champion, when he's not supposed to fight up close in terms that aren't his own, even with Bulwark and his ult. There's nothing inherently wrong with his kit. He just needs some small adjustments and that should be enough.

Yes, being melee is yet another problem.

Nah, his kit needs some serious overhaul. First of all because it's clunky as hell and outclassed by most other champs in the same role, second because it's hell to balance (the lane will be decided in pick&ban phase mostly. You have to be really stupid to lose a lane vs AP as galio)

But also his kit fails to deliver his theme correctly. If someone told me Galio's story and how he looks and all that I would imagine a massive gargolye crashing into the fight, knocking away whoever threatens the carry and be like "Yo, heard you were talking shit about my carry?" and then smash that guys head in two. Kinda like a opposite Sion: instead of charging in you tackle out the attacking one, effectively protecting your squishy adc, mage, support, whatever...

Another weird thing: he has MASSIVE arms and fists... yet his abilities use neither his wings properly nor his ability to probably crush your skull by simply grabbing it.

You think the comparison should be with Sion, but I think Rammus and Malphite are closer to the mark. Both of them get some damage from stacking Armor like Galio does from MR. All of them have 2 forms of CC, a slow and something harder. They tend to go in different lanes, sure, but they're the champs I think of when I need to tank a team that only does one kind of damage.

What's wrong with his kit, specifically?

In terms of pure gamplay elements Sion is of course not the first one to come to mind, but if we go by actual lore and thematics - well, Sion has even a special line for him. ^^

Now, first of all his kit is outdated, clunky and has absolutely no synergy. Unless you think of pressing alt-W before ulting an impressive synergy combo. On top of that his shield is kinda... There is just nothing that a.) allows you to express skill and b.) there's nothing that makes him really unique. There is just NO reason to pick him over ANY other champ in most situations (unless your enemy runs a 5 man AP team. And even then a team without Galio that just gets MR items will get the job better done probably).

You want to pick him for his ability to speed a team up a little in a really limited area? No one needs that in a time wher emost champs are super mobile. Also Jayce ^^ Oh, you want to pick him for his shield? Lolnope, every support's more useful. Even Karma. And his ult... malph or amumu do the job better, safer and more reliant while doing his job as a tank even better - without being forced into buying Athene's and Abyssals every game.

His only real strenght being his passive - and that's just too good against ap laners, mostly because it lacks counterplay. What do you want to do if Galio is ahead as AP? You won't deal him damage, he gets free damage from the passive, lane over. And if Galio falls behind himself... well, have fun being useless all game.

Also his Q... don't get me even starte don that. Eye-lasers causing an explosion? (because that's what it is) Sounds like lazy ability design for me...

I just want to play a massive guardian and protector, a champ that really says "Assault from above". Because rigth now it's more like "Slow ass stone thing from the side"...
