Give Dorans Shield %Health Regen

Instead of the flat 6 HP per second. item 1055 and item 1056 both scale with the lifesteal and %mana regen, so allow at the least item 1054 to scale with a tank's stats.

I'm thinking a good starting value would be 50% HP/5 as this would amount to a little under 6 at lvl 1 for most champs, but scale much better throughout laning phase/the game.

Doran's items should be early-game items, not items that scale into lategame (like a %health mechanic does... and also like lifesteal does, for Doran's Blade).

If you mean have it scale with the champion's base HP regen, that would be fine.

50% HP/5 .. like 100% HP in 10 sec ... from dead to full life in 10 sec?

EDIT: I think you refer to 50% base HP regen ...randomly picking Nasus as example .. he starts with 9 HP / 5 .. hitting 12 HP /5 at lvl 6 ...

so regen lvl1 / lvl 6 IS 15 / 18

changed would be 12.5 / 18

Dorans shield is expected to be an early game item .. why should it scale to lategame?

you are right about that, but two item 1006 equal shield on most top champs and 3 will equal on any champion in the game while still scaling into late until you sell or upgrade them while being cheaper/equal in price. paying 150g for the trashy passive and 80hp isn't worth it hoonestly. better to get the 3 pots or third bead with that.

Anraton1 votes

you also forget the "block 8 damage per aa/single target skill" ...

8 less damage is 8 hp less to regenerate ..

Jayrett1 votes

honestly, how many people who take shield go against people with mostly single target spells? and keep in mind 8hp would take not even 10s for the shield regenerate. the amount of hp it saves is so small compared to the regen that it's not worth it.

gonna do a bit of math here.

champion has 6 base regen. champion takes 5 autos that deal 50 damage each. shield would reduce the total damage to 210. shield would regen that hp in 90~ seconds. 3 beads would take 250 damage. 3 beads would regen it in 85~ seconds.

and this is just for lvl 1 laners typically. Each bead gets stronger as the game goes on and doesn't have to be sold, they can be upgraded to better items unlike shield.

The only statement that could really work in favor of the shield is anti-burst but shield won't really do much if they can do 100% of your hp. Beads are better for harassing and after surviving a burst.

And I did refer to the passive, I did call it trashy.

it also blocks minion damage it grants 80 hp - on Shen lvl 1 it is about 15% additional health

once again ... it is an early game item ... it is not supposed to be super strong in mid or late game

if you fight within a minion wave melee minion damage is reduce to 33%, caster minion is reduced to 65%

Jayrett1 votes

issue is, Bead do a similar job even at lvl 1 for the same price or cheaper, scale well later and can be upgraded into stronger items. While shield does give 80 hp, that quickly becomes obsolute, it's 1 or 2 spells/autos after the first back. if you're fighting in a minion wave, you should have gone cloth/longsword/tome for your starting item, not a shield.

more on the hp, we'll say shen first backs at lvl 6.

his base hp/regen per 5 is 826/13

shield would take it to 906/19 3 beads would take it to 826/32.5

a lvl 6 shen would regen the 80 hp in under 35 seconds and from then on have more effective hp than the shield. And a shen has his W to dodge autos as well further pushing it in favor of triple beads.

a lvl 1 has 540/10 base.

shield would be 620/16 3 beads would be 540/25

I don't mind doing this for any champion you want to, not being a dick or anything, imo beads will never be less useful than shield but you are free to disagree as much as you want. But doing this will help others to decide which they think is better. Just don't bring up Gnar, he's very unique in how beads/shield work for him in terms of comparison since that depends on which form you perfer.

ok lets do a simpe example with a 2 generic characters (miror match).... both have 550 hp, both deal 50 damage with aa (ignoring armor damage reduction!) .. lets say AS is .5 one

one is equipped with dorans shield (no pot to keep it simple), the other uses 3x bead

they meet at dragon/baron. all they do is aa each other ... who'll die and who'll survive?

EDIT: reduced as from .65 to .5 for easier calculations

Jayrett1 votes

That's completely out of context since that's a straight brawl and not laning. Yes shield will will that one because that's fighting with no other damage sources. That's not harrassing while farming. You may as well be two junglers rather than laners.

Anraton1 votes

just wanted to keep the example simple ...

Jayrett1 votes

I understand that, but that's completely different from our conversation. We were comparing 3 beads to a shield for first purchase for a lane. I'm not trying to be rude if I come off as it.

Anraton1 votes

well ... i wanted to show .. that in a direct fight, 80 additional hp and damage reduction is stronger as your 3 beads .. as you don't necessary have the time to regenerate ....

against someone like pantheon lvl 1 ... aa - q - aa would be 24 damage reduced from shield .. within .. like 2 seconds ... (still takeing about 150? damage) 24 health, that arent needed to be regenrated in the first place

you get the idea?

Jayrett1 votes

I do get it, but I'm saying that beads will even early on regenerate that unblocked damage at the same rate that shield would with the blocked damage. And beads don't have to be sold resulting in 300g lost. Although I wouldn't take them against Pan, I would go a cloth or ruby against him since he's a hyperburster.

Anraton1 votes

maybe an even better example would be Riven q animation cancel? :-D but yea .. use of doran IS limited ..

You are only doing math based on the hp regen number. You also need to include the math of the enemies DPS so we know how much you are enduring in combat which determines how much HP regen you would need. Do you have a ranged toon? Or are you always up in it's business? Do you have enough mana to justify this much health sustain? Do you have teleport? That also makes huge difference on how you start your items. Are you planning on fighting a lot? (if so then regen isn't going to save your ass) Does the enemy plan on fighting you a lot even if you don't plan on it? Who counters who? I could go on honestly, but I think I've made my point.

cuddlykitten41 votes

The thing about a game where strategy is such a big deal is that the math is only half the story. You can have the strongest champ in the game numerically, but that doesn't mean someone isn't going to smack across the rift and back again. The ones who think their math saves them are usually the ones who fall short in the end. Like I said, all the regen in the world can't save you if you can't get away. Something that simple crushes all your number crunching in an instant.

Jayrett1 votes

I'm doing the math with a harrassment every 30-60 seconds. I'm not including it in the numbers but that's the dps I'm assuming.

Doran's Shield specifically states its champion damage only

And on top of that it's damage reduction is pre mitigation, so with just base MR against say, a 100 damage Ryze Q, DS's damage reduction only reduces it by 6, not 8

The item is garbage, I start Ruby Crystal over it all the time

cuddlykitten41 votes

It's a starter item. I mean, at a certain point you're asking too much of it. You guys are trying to make it viable for later in the game. Don't need the basic dmg reduction? Take the blade, or a longsword, or cloth armor. Doran's shield is for AA using bastards and tanks that can't farm unless they're up in the action. You have to use some common sense in picking your starter item. Yes, doran's shield is the weakest one in my opinion as well. To call it weak is silly though. Also, in your math, you forgot the 80 hp that you get from the shield. Yea, the beads are nice, but only if you don't die in the fight. The shield helps you not die in the fight. I'll put it this way, I always look at my enemies starter items. If it's all sustain items with no way to enhance their combat prowess, I lay into them hard and send them home constantly. HP regen is useless if all you do is stand there regenerating HP.

Besides, looking at your match history, it's obvious that you aren't that good with tanks according to the win rate with them. In fact, the only one you take is Sion (occasionally gnar, but that's only kind of a tank at best) who's W passive compensates for the lack of the shield. No one starts sion off with the shield to the best of my knowledge. In fact, he should start with a longsword to guarantee the stacks so if you're starting him with 3 beads then you're already messing up and that's literally the reason you have a low win rate. You're "OP" starting strategy is the reason you aren't winning games.

Jayrett1 votes
  1. I never said it was op, I only said I considered beads to be stronger than shield no matter the case.
  2. I haven't done top much at all this season. I've been playing mid/support mainly.

WTF? you want people to be regenerating 100% of their HP every 10 seconds? this 450 gold item would become better than a mundo ult with 4500 HP and spirit visage.

hes talking about 50% base health regen. you know, like item 1006

and i think that would actually make dorans shield worse for many champions. the flat health regen is the reason its a better item on early.

what they could do however is increase the health on dorans shield, or the flat regen value.

Sugar Momma1 votes

Yeah this is what I mean. % max HP regen would be OP LOL. And 50% is just a value I suggested but 75% and 100% could be considered too.

Ruin Lance1 votes

ah yeah. not sure why i couldn't infer that lol. but i agree, that would definitely be too low.

cuddlykitten41 votes

It's because your starting stats are different on each champ. Not every champ will be able to have the 6 HP/5 if it's off of a % value. If it's a base stat all champs who equip it will have 6 HP/5 for sure. It's intention is to nudge the early game and be sold later. It's wiser to give it a solid value. Doran's blade is %LS because you don't always have the opportunity to steal life from something, but you are always regenerating health.
