Thoughts on New Maokai from a Maokai Main

I was skeptical. Honestly, his ult looked atrocious, and the reworked W (confirmed now to have been a bug) was disgusting from what footage I DID see of it. But, after playing him, I feel VERY differently.

Firstly, Maokai's new passive is better than his old by MILES. His sustain is much better, especially lategame, and now he doesn't just rely on everyone else to proc it for him.

W feels good still! This was great news.

E is AMAZING. The stickybomb sapling thing is honestly my favorite part about this rework. Now having saplings in brush (especially when I'm toplane Maokai) feels great! For those who aren't aware, they explode on their target once, then spread to all affect targets and explode two additional times over two seconds. It's honestly a fantastic change.

The ult range is underwhelming, especially when you factor in its REALLY slow speed, but it really is a great zoning tool. Also, flash+R for a whole-team root isn't a BAD idea by any means. I do miss the damage reduction but this is by far much more interactive.

The main worry I had with this rework was that Maokai lost a large part of his tankiness from his ult, but the passive update filled in that gap almost perfectly. Sure, he doesn't provide that team-wide zone of damage reduction anymore, but he feels so much better to play, and literally all four of his active abilities provide CC. That is awesome.

I'm REALLY happy with the Maokai rework. Thanks Rito.

EDIT: And what I forgot to mention, is that the VO sounds even better than it did before.

New voiceover is stupid. New W is stupid. E feels great. Q is about the same for me. Ultimate could be a little bit faster, but not much.

I'm hesitant on his Q. What do you think about his Q?

Feels more impacting with knockback range. The shorter slow isn't great but it's 99% so it still feels awesome. Might as well be a short stun.

I like the idea of his ult, I just think they should have given his ultimate some sort scale in size as he levels it up

As a Maokai main that hasn't had the chance to use him yet, this warms the cockles of my cellulose. Thanks for the review.

Of course you're happy, hes broken.

His passive is basically late game vlad all over again.

I don't care for the rework at all. One of the main problems I've had with the new Moakia is that his passive is very random for when it procs', due to it being on a "timer" that changes as you level up. The second problem with that is, once you begin the animation to auto attack a minion or enemy to heal, your locked into it, you can't move, you cant cast any abilities and it takes forever to finish, so your a sitting duck. His saplings do damage over time now, and slow even more for every tick they hit on an enemy, and it's based on a % of their max health. WHY? This was completely unnecessary, the original did a small AOE damage when they landed, and detonated once activated and causing a slow. They would only severely damage an enemy if you were building full AP Moakia, but now that's not a problem because it still scales with AP but it deals extra % health damage as well, and its only when their placed in bushes? The Ultimate doesn't make sense for Moakia's game-play or lore for that matter, it is a gimmick if anything, its not intimidating to an enemy because it does no damage, and if an entire enemy team lines up behind one another, the root will only hit one of them and that is what normally happens in game, or they just walk away from it. The new Moakia feels clunky and terrible to play, he's a support or a jungler now apparently instead of a top-laner. I miss the old Moakia, i spent allot of time on him, got him Level 7 and played him in ranked when ever he was needed, but now he's just like my Aatrox pick, completely gutted with the new reworks, and not even close to their original concept or gameplay, and i don't think they'll ever be the same.

Maokai Aatrox Rest in Peace old friends, you will be missed.
