Can Taric really top anymore? Tips?

I don't intend to flame or throw shit on the rework. I ask this because I've been playing the old Taric top for 2 years with excellent results but I can't figure out yet this new one. His set seems advanced, I get it. But I feel it forces him to support (which yeas... it is his main role). When coming to solo lane it seems really underwhelming. I used to crush so easily Rivens, Fioras, Jax... any AD glass cannon thought I didn't deal any damage and then completely out trade them. All armor runes, start W, item 1029 and that gave me 105 starting armor at level 1. Now I get like 80ish. His W doesn't deal damage anymore, his stun doesn't always land and his R doesn't deal damage anymore neither, nor give extra damage and AP. So have you been playing him top successfully after the rework? How?

I'll admit I tried it (Riot Ranger XIV can attest to it). It's... not great. The stun feels better, doing more damage and lasting longer than before, but is harder to hit. If you're engaging, and get in aa range, your skills have tiny cds and allow for sustained, empowered, faster autos. The heal is nice, and the shield is nice, and you augment jungle ganks something fierce, but his mana costs are astronomical. Manamune is pretty much essential now. Outside of that, go straight tank with the exception of maybe a titanic hydra if you're significantly ahead. Pick fights carefully, and don't choose taric into mobile toplaners, who can easily sidestep your telegraphed stun.

The sad part is that before Taric worked great against mobile Champions with his click and stun :(

I wrote a very detailed thread about the overall rework made on Taric. I went in depth about how the new Taric functioned.

But a short answer to this is that the new Taric is not suited for solo laning. He lost his wave clear, his kill pressure, his guaranteed to hit CC and inherited mana issues. Taric is harder to kill, team fights better and clears jungle camps safer. If you take Taric out of support his next best role is in the jungle where he can spam his abilities with blue buff and make decent ganks.

If you remember a short post from Riot recently that addressed the issue of role identity, Taric would fall into the Warden category. Purely defensive and incredibly reliant on his team. The worst type of champion to bring into solo queue but a great choice for the "weak link" players in a group queue.

I feared this would be the case. I am really sad to hear and that's why I feared the rework. Thank you.

He can top, he's just got to find some submissive bottom that can take his mace and massive gems.

I have let to try it but I think he can do it. It very likely you have to rush a Bami's Cinder(make into Sunfire Cape) for wave clear as he dont really have any. Then a Glacial Shroud for the mana and cooldown. After that I think you could make any thing you wish so long as it has Health or armor on it. Titanic Hydra will likley be good on him as well do to his pass.

So yeah i think it can work so long as you can get past the early game.
