I actually wouldn't mind if AP Yi came back

Why can't AP Yi be like AP Ezreal? He can build ad, ap, or hybrid. There have been times when Ezreal's AP build was too strong, but they never removed it completely. I believe that before his nerfs, AP Yi (Master Yi in general actually) was way too strong, but now that he's been nerfed numerous times he should be mostly balanced. Having said this, what exactly was the problem with AP Yi? There really was no issue with it at all and I have no problems with it coming back.

It was counterable, because he was still gated by cooldowns and mana (edit: due to old ap itemisation). But now... MasterYi item 3020 item 3165 item 3285 item 3100 item 3089 item 3157 ... he'd be an even more annoying poke champ than Lux

He wasn't. No matter what you did to him in lane, if you didn't bring him to 0, all he had to do was skirt on the outside of your range and Meditate literally all of his HP back, while forcing you to be nowhere near your own creepwave or you would get alpha strike'd for 1/3 your HP, until he buys items, where you will lose at least half. You could not trade with him or interact with him unless your jungler was literally sitting in the bush waiting for you to go in.

He was literally the most disgusting champion in the entire game. Kass/LB/Talon w/ Silence and Eve with Stun was more fair than he was. At least the former would die if caught out of position, and Eve would get reported by her own team 99.9999% of the time anyone played her.

Mana costs. Him Q had high mana cost, and W cost was way higher than it is now too. Athene's didn't exist, and his cooldowns make spamming for tear near impossible, and chalice as an item sucked. Late game he was a one skill wonder, because while his Q had a high AP ratio for a skill, all other AP champs had a higher total AP ratio to reliably nuke like they are supposed to.

They dont want him building ability power. Riot can just straight up say, "No, you cant build x champion that way" A very recent example of that is kennen. They changed the ad ratio on his W to ap and removed the ability for runanne's to stack his aa's. That way, he'll be played as a mage like they intended.

I don't mind if something was really toxic, but I dislike changing something just because it "isn't how it's supposed to be played".

AP Yi was an unintended side-effect of the champion's scaling. It is not at all something they wanted mainstream. Nowadays we have Guinsoo's and Nashor, so rewarding him with damage-based AP scaling means you're enabling more than just AP Yi.

That's probably why it's not a thing. Yi is meant to be a one-trick pony.
