Why is Diamond+ twice as large this season?

Historically Diamond+ was the top 2-2.5% of players. This season its 4%. Most noticeably, Diamond 4 (new Diamond 5) looks over double the size that it has been in the past. Grandmasters doesn't really explain this at all because it's roughly the size Masters was last year.

It seems like twice as many people are in low Diamond as past seasons. Keep in mind this is even after they reset Diamond 4 on a few servers this season already.

Why is this? I know they got rid of 5 divisions but that doesn't seem like it would affect it that much. I feel as though this might explain why people say diamond feels awful right now. Low diamond has doubled in size while high diamond+ has stayed the same. You now have double the people fighting for the same higher spots which may be making the LP system extremely harsh.

Thoughts?

This is just a theory but I think it's poorly tuned MMR gains at the beginning of the season. People were gaining a lot more than they should, and so the amount of people in higher divisions shot through the roof. This is why we had the partial reset in Diamond+. People are now paying for it with much worse MMR now so even though they're "Diamond 4" it's much harder for them.

It's kinda hard to explain but basically

  1. You got more gains at the beginning of the season
  2. Riot realized their fuckup and tuned it back down, so if you got a number of extra tiers off it now your LP gains are trash and you're falling faster than climbing
  3. Riot did partial reset, so these people fell faster, hit D4, and became demotivated because +16/-24 or something stupid like that is demoralizing.

Because there is a whole other tier that didn't exist before? Because they increased sizes of Master and Challenger rosters?

Because so many ppl spammed early season elo and are now inting at low diamond but not playing so much games.

If you look at any match history, you will see people hard stomped. If you enter in their op.gg, the vast majority will be people hard stuck at low plat for seasons that climbed to diamond in the began of this season.
