The problem with making Magus a more distinct enchantment is...

that we have just a huge Variety of possible AP junglers to make it distinct with.

Our current "Meta" Ap junglers would be Diana Elise Nidalee. Some off "meta" AP junglers would be within the ranges of Morgana Azir Karthus.

Many people would agree that the main problem is that they run out of mana really fast, whenever they are without blue buff, which greatly reduces their clear times and increases the punishment token in jungle, resulting in fewer ganks and so on. So on that problem, people agree that Magus having some sort of Mana Regen/Vamp would help.

I'd argue that this would make mages in jungle way broken. Mage junglers, unlike fighters and tanks, are burst, relying on being assassins. Their mana restrictions in the jungle make up for their gank/kill pressure they can put on lanes. Adding in a way for them to stay in gankable condition while farming effectively might lead to Diana and Elise getting nerfed even more. Maybe Nidalee too.

TL;DR: By making their clear times, punishment and mana conditions easier to overcome mages would become considerably stronger. Even if this might be a good thing, junglers currently effective might be nerfed even more than they should be.

There's always been one dominant kind of jungle item.

For half of Season 3 until the beginning of Season 5, it was all about Elder Lizard/Warrior enchantment because junglers like Lee, Eve, Panth, Vi, J4, Kha, Wukong, etc. were broken in the jungle. Champions that used to build Golem in the beginning of Season 3 quickly hopped onto Lizard because of Golem's nerfs.

For a short period of time, Feral Flare was broken upon its release, so champions like Udyr, Yi, and Noc were very popular along with Feral Flare were popular. Everyone was trying out Feral Flare on every single jungler in the game, until it got nerfed.

Now Cinderhulk is broken. Everyone that built Warrior just a month ago is now going Cinderhulk and Black Cleaver.

Magus/Wraith has always just been there for the select number of champions that could not use the other items. Champions like Fid, Nid, and Diana built it because they were the most common AP junglers. Champions like Vlad and Morde built Wraith during Season 3 because of the spellvamp it gave.

TL;DR Magus Enchantment/Spirit of Wraith has always just been there for the few AP junglers out there that couldn't use the jungle item that was broken at its time. I think that's it just seems clouded out right now because of the popularity of champions that can take advantage of Cinderhulk. I assure you that Fid, Nid, and Diana are not good contenders for building Cinderhulk. I think Magus is fine just the way it is. This is just how it's been forever.

Well, I guess that's why we have balance: so champions can have nice things, but not too much of a good thing.

In this context: give magus some mana regen, but not too much.

All magus needs is 50-75% mana regen, or 6% of damage delt is restored as mana.

I think there is a bigger problem as a whole with jungle picks you kind of glaze over.

The problem is, a lot of the strong junglers right now simply cant do anywhere else and be successful (sejuani, Gragas, hell even Lane Sin is bad right now) whereas all of the possible AP "junglers" can very easily go mid or top.

Jungle can become a place where laning rejects go, and AP champions tend to not have that problem.

there are also AP sustained damage junglers like karthus and morg, as well as AD assassin junglers.
