Why limit Masteries to 20?

Anyone else feel like they don't have enough Mastery pages, especially in SoloQ where you have to be ready to play every role?

What I'd really like to see is Mastery pages become more like Item Sets. You can choose which champions each Mastery page applies to and then you can select from one of those Mastery pages at champion select. This would allow you to have as many Mastery pages as you want and yet not give you a ridiculously long drop down menu during champion select.

Well, on the bright side..mastery pages are the only thing you can change on the fly...so maybe name one "Adapt or Die!" and use it as the one you fack up to all hell so your ADC , jungle fizz, yi top, and bruiser shaco pages can remain un mangled?

A rather inefficient method if you ask me, as you have to rework the page every time you would use it, and the method that the OP proposed would actually allow you to organize and sort your information, giving you much more freedom to work with.

I actually really like the method of editing pages before the game starts. It allows you to tailor each page to each teamcomp and enemy teamcomp individually, which is honestly advantageous. At this point I have about 12 base pages, and then I modify each depending on what I want.

Who says you cannot have both?

The system he has proposed definitely has room to allow you to do that. The only different thing is that you can now organize the information better, and have some masteries preset to specific champions making it easier to sift through your mastery pages if you have a lot of pages.

it is inefficient, and the op's idea is much better...however, mine is actually an option that doesn't rely on hopes and dreams to make it happen.

Correct, but a band-aid solution is still just that, a band-aid.

StealthWarden1 votes

call it whatever you want...its still the only thing we as players have in our power to implement as a solution. So band-aid it, or let it bleed. Its your choice.

I just filled up 19 with basic pages. I keep the last page available so I can build a custom Mastery page as necessary.

I'm ok with the mastery pages because you can change them on the spot. Runes are not the same case though.

I make a mastery page every game I go into Unless I'm playing Bard, doesn't matter what he runs hes freaking OP

I'm not sure whether to up rank or down rank the statement about bard ...

Part of it's probably an arbitrary number that was suitable a few seasons ago (like still having 3/6 bans), but may or may not be up-to-date.

Another part is probably a server space thing- it used to be stored client-side, but that ended up with people able to give themselves 100% summoner spell cdr (you could set the client to allocate 30 mastery points at once, and it wouldn't respect the '3 point limit' on the 1st level mastery, which was something along the lines of 4-8-12% summoner cdr). So it's on servers now, and when you deal with millions of data sets, storage space is at least a concern (I mean, you'd probably need something along the lines of what... a couple kilo's to get a readable data set for one, x20, x20E6... roughly 80E7 kilo's = 80E4 mega = 800 gigabytes? And that's just for masteries- and it'll continue to grow even without increasing the number of masteries.)

Not a gigantic amount of space, but it's still something. (Also using sketchy estimates- could easily be 2 to ten times that, depending on formatting, encryption, and any number of other concerns.)

Pretty much having to alter or outright change masteries every game. Not just 1 point here or there, but sometimes having to change quite a bit. Unfortunately I can't do the same with my rune pages since you can (for no good reason) not touch them in champ select.

It is a bit annoying.

I like to think I play a variety of champions, but the 20 limit has never been a problem for me.

I have enough for basic role needs, as well as plenty specific pages for champions I play often, only replacing pages I never use for ones I might use.

So unless you are constantly using all your pages daily, I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I would agree with this.

Because masteries aren't permanent and you can change them easily in champ select... just have 1 mastery page and change it every game.

i have 1 mastery page and i just make my mastery page fast before a game. get in a habit of doing it

Budupops1 votes

Because good players make a distinct page every game

Ackelope1 votes

I'm fairly certain a few other people do this as well, but i have a single mastery page titled Adaptability which I customize in champion select before every game. I feel like it's a fairly good idea, as it's not terribly time-consuming once you get in the habit, and it allows your masteries to be specifically tailored to every game.

i didn't know people actually used mastery pages TIL

Zone of Endless1 votes

You can change mastery at will so it's just faster if you redo the mastery instead of searching through dozens of pages.

I never understood why people actually have mastery pages created in advance... Is it really that difficult to just make them on the fly? Takes me about 10-15~ seconds to make one.

ZenithEevee1 votes

Because maybe the fact that if you dont make basic archetype pages for roles, you shouldnt have an opinion?

Like seriously, If you REALLY think about it, Everyone has INFINITE Mastery pages at the click of an "Edit" button.

Also because theres ~7 roles, 2 damage archetypes and making one for each possible outcome still offers 6 pages for 6 champions you main.

Also, probably the fact that theres millions of acc's, Times that by 20, then times that by the amount of possible mastery combiniations down to every single point.

Seriously, Shit takes room.

Maybe in the champion select lobby they provide a top voted mastery page for the specific champ you are using in there most well known role, that you could choose to take instead of your own custom.

500 Minions1 votes

15 general pages and 5 special pages per champion should be perfect.

Bârd1 votes

I dont have this problem.

I have one mastery page that I change every game.

I see my more experienced friends making masteries more based on roles/types they more often play rather then individual champs (like myself) I see stuff like AP Tank, AP Jungler, Tank Jungler, ADC, "Super Shurima Brothers", etc. Unless Rito gives us more pages I think we just have to deal with consolidation.

It Hertz When IP1 votes

This. I have AD Jungler, Mage Marksman, ADC, AP Support, Tank Support... TBH with only a few exceptions 7 or so mastery pages cover every champion I own in any lane/role.

Morgan Slaveman1 votes

I just make a mastery page for every game. Seems tedious the first couple of times but you get used to it, and you can have a few pages for backup when you have last minute fuck-ups.

W6ryv9Qjjs1 votes

I only use one page and rebuild it every game i play.

UPfreely1 votes

it would be really nice if they were champion specific pages i.e. have a separate mastery/rune page for each champion. maybe have up to 3 for each since they can have different playstyles ect.

yeah that's what I was hoping for. Item sets already allows you to do this pretty easily so I don't see why they could do something similar for masteries.

Xietnin1 votes

126 champions 20 mastery pages 20 rune pages and then there's champions that can run different kinds of runes/masteries for different kinds of matchups like Jax/Cho'Gath/anyone that has more than one possible purpose ie: jungle OR top( which is one of the more common examples). Been thinking about playing more of that Heroes of The Storm on a separate note. PS: I just don't see how people can make mastery pages on the fly when picking/colliding roles.

KevinDelMarr1 votes

You really just need like 5 pre-set pages as an "oh crap I need masteries" pages, then a 6th page for when you have time. It takes 10 seconds (if your client doesn't lag) to set-up a page. Plus having a ton of pages can get confusing, or maybe you don't have a specific page.
