Decided to play 10 games of "fill"....

Randomonium··192 votes·9,267 views

Got support all 10 times....

I really think Riot has missed the mark with the fill option. People don't choose fill to have shorter queue times or play the same role over and over again. People fill because they want DIVERSITY in the roles they play.

I propose that if a person selects fill they don't just get assigned whatever role is available. Rather, the fill option will act as a randomizer where the player has an equal chance to get any one of the 5 roles. This would mean you would get a 20% chance to get each role.

If this option were available I think you'd see a lot more people choosing fill. As it stands right now very few people will choose fill because it is the exact same as choosing support (and if you actually want to support why would you choose fill?)

Fill means that you are willing to fill any required role.

Support is the role with the least supply and the most demand.

It's pretty obvious 'fill' is primarily going to match you as a support.

Randomonium52 votes

The whole reason people fill though is to play multiple roles. If I wanted to support all the time I would choose support but I don't. I want to play all the roles. The fill button in its current form is useless and redundant because it is exactly the same as support.

I don't mind playing support 20% of the time but when its 100% of the time then I'm just not going to queue fill anymore. This results in people who are willing to support going down because now instead of supporting 20% of the time I'll support 0% of the time.

ChaoticPinecone9 votes

Since ive been playing at least (S2), "fill" was almost always support. Ranked. Draft. Blind. If you said "fill" in chat, it basically meant youre going to support.

Not sure why you think "fill" should mean anything different now. You know that most of the time, games need supports. If you dont want to support, then dont queue up for fill. Its simple.

Go support 0% of the time then. Youre just adding to the problem.

Randomonium29 votes

Yes but in the old system you could say "fill except support" or "mid/jg/top/adc." This new system in a lot of ways is a complete step back. I either choose 2 roles or I choose 5, there's no other options.

Also, most of the time in the old system I wouldn't call a role. I'd let other people call what they wanted and then pick from the remaining available roles. Yeah I got stuck with support sometimes but it was only 20-30%, not 100% like under the new system.

Such Flawed Logic

You can not expect other players to play support just to help with the "problem". If players do not want to support, that is completely up to them. If they choose fill and get tired of getting the same role every game, then it is 100% fine for them to stop going fill.

The system needs to update, not the player. I have been a fill main for over 6k games, but since dynamic q, I cant do it anymore. I don't want to play support 9/10 times. 2-5/10 is fine. I enjoy all roles, its why I was a fill main. But now players are basically forced into picking 2 roles to main.

If one of those roles happens to be support, then its support you will get 99% of the time. Which is only beneficial to actual support mains. Everyone else has to change the 2 roles game by game if they want to play more than 2 roles, or tweak which 2 roles they pick based on the role/s they want to play. This needs an update, its that simple.

Truth is, the only problem here is the system. And your the one adding to it, by blaming the player base.

Fyi, fill does mean diversity to some of us, and quite frankly I enjoyed the randomness of it. Not to mention, I've never met a fill main that called themselves a support main. Those players usually call them selves, you guessed it, support mains.

So what your saying is, because the community needs people to fill the support role the system is broken. Legit the player base needs more support mains as blatantly indicated by the fact that fill keeps giving people support. Supporting is hard to enjoy outside of premades and there is no getting around that really.

What do you people expect, if you take fill, that means you're okay with playing anything, so they'll put you in the most needed/unplayed role, SUPPORT,

If someone doesn't wanna play support, then don't pick support.

And if you want diversity, then one game pick Top/Mid, Next game pick Bot/Jungle. It's not that hard.

the problem with alternating, in my opinion, is i really don't care in most cases, and i'd be fine playing anything except support in every game; but i can only select two roles.... so... yeah, i think they should just add the option to pick up to 4 roles, or "any"

What if we want to support sometimes? I mean, I like to support sometimes. But sometimes I also want to top, mid, jg, or adc. But I'm not sure what to play and picking fill just gets me support every time so that doesn't help my case as I could just as easily just pick support and possibly get it.

What about support mains who like support but don't want to play it EVERY time? Or other mains who like support but still want to main their role? How does that help them?

ChaoticPinecone3 votes

If you want to support sometimes, the solution is very simple - queue up for support sometimes.

Shroom Junkie3 votes

Yeah and what about when we want support or another role? Or to just plain fill? We don't want support every time but if we like support and a second role but not the others, then what do we do? We're stuck on support. Forever. And if we like every role then we can't do that because its either support every time or pick 2 different roles.

Ralimak2 votes

If you like every role, then the solution is simple. Pick 2 of the roles for one game, then switch it up for the next. If you say you don't like how the fill option works because it doesn't let you have a variety of roles, make the variety happen yourself. And if you aren't willing to do that, then you are just trying to make the game make all of your choices for you, which is kind of sad.

Sukishoo23 votes

"People fill because they want DIVERSITY in the roles they play."

Well not really. Fill is just to FILL whatever role is left and 95% of the time that has been Support even back when team builder was around the support role got almost insta-queues while other roles had much longer queue times.

Art Of Solo Q2 votes

Your right and wrong. Hes saying what most fill mains desire, your pointing out the result. 2 diff things, as a fill main for years, and literally over 6k games I can tell you diversity is exactly what I wanted. Most of my friends are fill mains, and all of those mains agree with me and Randomonium.

Fill mains did not say fill because they WANTED support, they said fill because they enjoyed most if not all roles, and were willing to play any role.

The afro samurai12 votes

Dude im a support main and I'm sick and tired of always supporting..... I have played 52 support games and one top game in the last month, and I do it not because I like to support but because I want to play ranked and I don't want to wait 6+ min. Right now I'm deeply thinking of quiting leauge because it's become so constraining to play anything but support; because when I'm not in dynamic queue I'm in blind pick.now in blind pick there's always someone that calls the lanes before I even connect, in a group and threaten to report or they threaten to feed and afk and this has really Broken my will to play.

It Hertz When IP3 votes

I get the reverse problem. I queue specifically for support (support/fill) because I rarely if ever want a different role, but I keep getting other slots like 1/5 games.

WadeWilson13372 votes

As a jungle main who is playing normals until solo que comes out, i feel your pain. I suggest playing some off meta supports, that way youll have some fun or you bait a dodge.

Poppy support is HILARIOUSLY fun. Omg. If they pick Nami i squeal like a little girl when i am playing Poppy in support. Trundle "support" with grasp of the undying and titanic hydra if you get fed af is also pretty damn fun. Velkoz Zyra Anivia all quite fun and not very meta.

Its not a solution to the problem, but these are my ways of getting around the mundaneness of going support sometimes.

People do NOT pick fill for diversity. The biggest flaw in that argument is this, if people wanted diversity, then they should pick a different role each time they get done a match instead of picking "fill" because then you have a greater chance at getting the role that you listed.

Fill is an option that you use to fill any role that is left over in the lobby that you are placed in that is available. Most people use it as a way to get a shorter queue time and that is indisputable. It just happens that support is the 1 role that is left to fill since there are not a lot of support players because most people want to be damage dealers.

But to say that people only use it for "diversity" is complete nonsense.

The Rewritten6 votes

I pick fill for diversity. I play all 5 roles equally and like to be given my role randomly rather than choose it. So your first sentence is false. Unless you want to claim that I'm not a person.

Well, that was before dynamic queue anyway. After dynamic queue and getting support as fill literally 93% of the time (and playing other roles 0% of the time because every time I got something other than support, someone dodged) I quit support. I only play top and mid now.

If you really want to push the "fill is not for diversity" agenda we should really get a "random" button similar to what OP suggests. Look at that "fill" button. It's gigantic. Another button for "random" could easily fit in there.

56552559_DEL3 votes

I pick fill for diversity.

My first sentence is NOT false. Just because YOU choose to have "fill" for diversity doesnt mean the vast majority do the same thing.

That is all that needs to be said about your comment.

Olkard8 votes

Agreed. It should have a 20% chance to pick each role and it only queues you for two at once, so for example, you click fill and it queues you as mid/jungle. If you re-queue, it will pick another random two roles, such as top/bot. This will still be you choosing to play any role, but it prevents it from always giving you support.

I've picked fill roughly 14 times and I think I got top once, but someone dodged and I got support soon after.

Solitair8 votes

well, no one wants to be support anymore. Supports get so much shit, blamed for everything, the least fed, the least gratified, and then people insult them by telling them they have the easiest role. wtf u expect.

C9 Scott Free 6 votes

Uh no, fill has always meant "I will play what my team needs." In the system what your team needs is a support. Therefore you play support. They didn't miss the mark at all you just didn't realize fill means whatever is needed not whatever you feel like.

JavelinJoe2 votes

Fill is support not i'm willing to fill ANY role. If it was, then you would play more roles than Support when you select fill.

I mean it means you will play whats left over. Thats what it has always meant. yeah its basically a support button but filling means filling in where you need to not just support. Even if it means getting support lately

Frick Mako5 votes

To fill means to play whatever role is needed. And in most cases, that role is going to be support. If you don't want to support, then don't fill.

Lithium Rosa5 votes

but the word "fill" pretty much means you are getting whatever available. They could make another option of "random" for your requirement.

Power Cosmic5 votes

If you did not play Normal Draft mode before Dynamic, then you don't really get what is meant by filling. There are a lot of people that would rather support than jungle, or support over adc'ing, and would select support in early picks to avoid hard counters. This would often leave late picks as fills. To an extent, pretty much everyone gold and below was filling to some extent every ranked match. Of course support did trickle it's way down to last pick sometimes. But the times that would happen combined with you being the last pick only happened like 10% of the time.

tl;dr: In the old draft you did not play the mode (in ranked) if you couldn't play a few champs in every role. But the main issue is Dynamic has created a huge problem, that didn't exist before, in lessening the already sparsely played support role.

ShadowAce6665 votes

No they hit the mark dead center.

Fill is not the same as Random Fill means you will fill whatever role is needed to be filled, which is almost always support, occasionally jungle, and rarely anything else.

The problem is the community itself. Few people want to support and for good reason. I've played mostly support in previous seasons and I got tired of all the blame, lack of appreciation, and lack of carry potential. Some of the reasons why support and jungle are the least picked.

DeathBot6665 votes

I disagree actually. The purpose of fill to me is to take whatever lane is open. It's not "random" it's fill.

Junkyard4 votes

I agree with this! Support is legitimately my 2nd role, but I want to get PRIMARILY adc when I queue up for dynamic queue. I have done BOT/SUPP a lot and get Support like 95% of the time. I pretty much just put BOT/MID right now because that's the only way that I will get BOT consistently.

PDE5 Inhib4 votes

They should just remove fill. It is support. They just think people should rotate what roles they pick as their primary and secondary to get the "fill" feel.

Seiferoth4 votes

You want diversity.. Game 1: Queue for Top Jungle Game 2: Queue for Jungle Mid Game 3: Queue for Mid Bot Game 4: Queue for Support Fill

Feel free to change this as you see fit for example if you get Jungle in game 1, in game 2 Queue for Top Mid...

There you go diversity!

Edit: You can also ask if anyone wants to trade roles in champion select there's a chance someone got their secondary role and you got their primary! Voila! It's Magic!

DexterousGecko4 votes

Actually I'm pretty sure people DO fill to get faster ques. If you want someone to pick a role for you, just find a random list generator online, input the 5 roles, and queue for whatever the number 1 and 2 roles are. I don't get this whole 'i dont want to play the same role every time' bit. don't then! first game go top/jg, then top/mid or top/sup. seriously, I never play support unless I want to. I don't understand how it's this much of an issue.

That said, you should get your main role more than your secondary role, but that's a different issue.

Privileged Jew3 votes

If you choose support as your secondary, you will get it every time as well. I really wish Riot would stop deciding which role you're given based on availability. I really enjoy shifting between mid and support, but I can't go mid without risking getting a lane like bot, jg, or top (because I'm forced to replace support with something that I won't get 95% of the time).

WadeWilson13373 votes

Alot of people have been asking Riot to not put a limit on how many roles you can pick. If you want to pick Top, Mid, Jungle, ADC, then you should be able to. In theory, it would shorten que times. But the reality in that is that people who picked Fill will once again stop picking support, because they will get tired of it creating EVEN LESS support players. Riot realized there mistake in dynamic que by allowing you to pick roles so it doesn't take into account whether its your primary or secondary role to get the fastest que times, instead of fixing the problem and making support a desired role to play.

But Im Nunu3 votes

I agree with you that "fill" player wants diversity (as I am one of those players). But I fear that if this were to be implemented, the queue time would get even longer than it is now ( 10 minutes or normal? rito pls). I think it is best to, instead of changing the somehow encourage players to play more role (including support) so that the fill option would then be more diverse. Perhaps do something like the new crafting system, you get a reward for each unique role you play? IDK.

Randomonium11 votes

And you obviously didn't read the post. The whole point is that fill is currently a useless and redundant option that very few people will utilize because it does not offer the diversity of roles that they are craving. That is why I proposed a new way that a full player's role is chosen.

The Queen Viper2 votes

{quoted}

... because it does not offer the diversity of roles that they are craving.

Maybe because that's not what "fill" is supposed to do anyway?

If they want diversity, THEY CAN PICK OTHER ROLES THEMSELVES.

"Fill" is only there for people who want to get into the game faster and are ready to FILL THE LEAST DEMANDED ROLE / THE ROLE WITH THE LOWEST AMOUNT OF PLAYERS, which at the moment is support. It's not there to "create diversity".

Randomonium10 votes

That's not the role of fill at all. Yet again I'm repeating myself since you didn't bother to read. People who fill don't care about a slightly faster queue time. They desire the challenge of having a random role assigned to them each game and still being able to perform. That is why fill should be random, not just the same role over and over again.

Right now fill is a useless and redundant option that doesn't meet the needs of players who would be interested in choosing it. So why not change it so players will actually want to select it?

The Queen Viper2 votes

{quoted}

They desire the challenge of having a random role assigned to them each game and still being able to perform.

Again, that's not the point of "fill".

They are doing it wrong.

Randomonium9 votes

You are a one trick pony, not a fill player. So who are you to say what fill should or shouldn't be? People who want to fill do so because they want to play different roles. Seriously, you telling me what fill should or shouldn't be is like me telling you what the Cassiopeia rework should be.

And why do you care? Just keep playing Cass and let us fill players have what we want. It doesn't affect you and your opinion on the matter is neither required nor desired. Its pretty clear that there a lot of people who desire this kind of option in the game.

The point is that this new system doesn't give players the diversity that they crave. I can't choose 3 roles or 4 roles or have a random role assigned to me. My options are to pick 2 roles or get assigned support because that's what fill is. Fill is just a second support option right now and there's no point to even have it in the game in its current state.

kDrakari1 votes

Personally, I'd rather just... more people play support. If support wasn't so unpopular then it would fix both incredibly long queue times for people who don't play support, and allow for diversity for people who put fill with the intention of variety, and also benefit anyone who wants to have support secondary so they can get their primary role more often (Since currently "support secondary" is basically the same as "support only")

MalzaharAnyLane1 votes

Yeah I totally miss those seasons where 2 people on both teams basically had to sacrifice 45 minutes of their time so the other 8 could actually have fun. kappa

kDrakari3 votes

As opposed to this season, where 8 people sacrifice 45 minutes of their time waiting in queue for the two people who want support to finish their previous game?
