Can we talk about how the level of fun has dropped dramatically and the level of toxicity has risen

Moonfall Saber··84 votes·17,467 views

This isn't a problem that happened overnight. This is a problem that has been growing since season 4 ended. Season 5 introduced devourer and the game went downhill from there.

I personally think that the toxicity environment of this game is most likely caused by problems with lack of correct balancing and unbalanced matchmaking as a whole system. I'm not going to get into this because everyone has mixed views on balance, however I think that the vast majority can agree with me when I say that the current balance is poop.

The road to recovery from this point is long or impossible. So what do we do from here? From a player prospective the game has lost its meaning... Fun. From a development standpoint the numbers on paper may look good. If profits are high then the game must be doing good however this may not be the case.

You can't look at a peice of paper that says people are enjoying the game. I personally would be more likely to buy skins and such of I knew I was going to be playing league for a long time, however I have been teetering on the edge of quitting for a while now. I'm sure other players feel similar.

Riot I am asking someone from your ranks to step up and address these concerns. I am asking just simply... Do you ever plan on balancing the game? Do you care about the players anymore? Or has riot itself become a toxic workplace where you are not allowed to stand up for fear of backlash or getting fired. Someone from riot please step up to the plate because currently the company is failing the players and I demand someone step up for the sake of the game.

The nostalgia goggles are strong.

The game is not less fun than before, you just get tired of it. Toxicity hasn't risen, in fact it's getting better every year, but you've become fed up with it.

The problem is not the game, it's your relationship with and view on the game.

Moonfall Saber10 votes

So at some point when the majority of the players are not happy with the game is it the game or the players.

NoDiscussion7 votes

Toxicity is definitely rising, I don't think there's any doubt about it, but the cause is very speculative. I've seen various people on these boards suggest that different updates caused it but honestly, it's just the players and Riot themselves who choose to promote it.

The whole honor and reform system has been a complete joke and while the statistics on it might make it seem like toxicity is decreasing, in reality it's just getting worse. All the statistics really say is less players are getting punished because toxic players are getting away with more and more.

i think its the runes reforged that changed our view. Personal opinion not fact

So you would rather have the runes and have new players struggle till lvl 30 so that they can be competitive in the game?

3TWarrior17 votes

literally all that was asked for to change the old system was to make runes free. Masteries were already powerful enough and runes reforged made them even stronger...

take a look at kleptomancy...in what way is it a good idea that you can randomly receive between 15 and 120 gold for landing an auto attack?

Disagree.

The game used to be more thematic. You picked the cool champion you liked and could tailor your builds and runes over long games giving diversity and fun.

Now you pick the PEW PEW OP champeens and go pawn noobs in stomp a thons.

Don't know what sort of happy rainbow funland you're living in, but it's certainly not better. It's as bad as it's ever been. People are assholes, through and through. I came back to this game a few weeks ago following a two year gap after quitting. Everyone is as big a cu-nt now as they were then.

Toxicity is getting better every year? Damn, I guess that's why I have an inter or feeder in most of my ranked games, and why if I fuck up even once I'm hounded on by my team and told to quit the game and kill myself.

Oh, and then we get the players who refuse to listen to teammates and the players who just don't want to have any fun whatsoever.

I'm sorry, but toxicity is an even more rampant problem than it was back in I'd say, season 6 and even before then. Back then toxicity wasn't an issue every game, it was an issue in some games. I have yet to play a game atm where I'm not afraid to talk to my team out of fear of them deciding to int, run it down or just cause issues between themselves.

Same deal with fun, it's no fun being oneshot. I'd argue that this meta is a whole lot less fun than any other meta we've had, including previous tank metas. Let me put it this way, I'm an assassin player and I hate (emphasis on hate) this meta since it's quite literally Call of Duty. We went from Halo where you had time to react to Call of Duty where one rogue bullet takes you down to red. Call of Duty simply isn't fun to me, I'm a Halo kind of guy.

Reading and seeing that the opposing mage/ADC/bruiser/assassin just did 70% of your HP in 1-2 abilities/autos is not fun, nor is getting chain CC'd or killed due to being hit by ONE rogue CC ability. These two factors make this meta extremely anti-fun, and honestly, if you enjoy this meta you're the one with rose-tinted glasses on since you well and truly haven't been on the receiving end of this bullshitery.

Ah, and then there's the mobility problem, Riot's stubbornness to fix the problem at hand directly (despite the general community speaking out as to what is the problem), champs being reworked and losing their identity, the client being a buggy mess, leveling up being meaningless besides a little bit of blue essence, the game lacking a solid alternative to standard 5v5 since Riot refuses to implement alternative gamemodes.....and that's just scratching the surface.

As you can see there are quite a lot of significant issues which Riot refuses to address due to their insecurity with the game and the fact it isn't as profitable and due to their egos. Funny thing actually, they're increasing the price of RP, which I can almost 100% pin down to Riot understanding that the game isn't as profitable. Seriously, a 10% price increase for us Aussies, and we already have a dodgy $$$ to RP ratio due to our economy.

I still love the game and I'm very much addicted to it, however even I cannot just up and say that there is less toxicity and that its level of "fun" has not dropped dramatically due to devs. just not giving a care in the world anymore. Sure, I'm nostalgic to an extent, but that was also when we had devs. that communicated with us, devs. that cared, a community that wasn't a cesspool of toxicity and immaturity and when we had a game that felt different from everything else on the market. As said, I'm a Halo guy, Halo is arguably one of the most unique FPS games. There are reasons why I don't generally play Call of Duty and battle royale games, which is why I stick to Halo; a game that embraces its individuality from the other games on the market. League just generally feels like a battle royale or CoD now, you get shot once and you're dead or almost dead, only...you can't leave games and it's not a free-for-all (may as well be).

This game can still be saved, it's just Riot doesn't want to save it, they're hoping to piggyback off of other games on the marketplace and appeal to their audiences/playerbase.

With that said I do think that Riot should set up legacy servers that allow players to select which season they'd like to play in. That alone would silence most quarrels to do with League. Legitimately, set up legacy servers for each season and then don't touch anything balance wise. Boom, done. However, I suppose that's a dream since Riot knows if they do that the live servers will pail in comparison to the legacy servers.

There's my two cents on what you've said.

There is no problem about how we all view the game. Have you never hit uppon a bunc of players in your team or maybe in the enemy team that just start tipping in the chat "ez" or "too ez l2p" or stuff like "r%%%%% coming 2v1 with your jungler" and "kys". The guy just starts swearing like a mad man for no real reason. For this reason you should think that the ban system shoud work very good right, i mean how hard can it be your league bot verifies it and the player gets a chat ban or worse depending on how much flame he or she did and how bad was it. No the LoL banning system doesn't work correctly at all. Some 2 or 3 days ago i think, i've read a story here on the community on boards LoL NA or EU doesn't really matter, about a player that got banned just for playing speed and cleanse top, he didn't feed he had an ending score of 2/3 or something but in his team was a jungler that fed and left and a support that also did the same thing, what you think that happend to them, yes you are right, nothing. The only guy that managed to get banned was the top player that had speed and cleanse and why? Just because he had those summoner spells. So how Moe (Yassuo) says: "fix your shit riot or else player might just forget about the game and start playing more fortinite and apex and maybe even dota2"

GoldsmithSmarty2 votes

Toxicity has definitely risen, the player base is significantly larger than it was, hence a lot of schoolers play this game now. They don't yet understand that you should respect other people even if you don't see them in person. Sense of security behind the screen allows them to say absolutely anything they want without fear of punishment. If you play casually and don't really have a high rank, you are forced to play with younger people. I personally don't see it being a big problem, but it is sometimes really hard to communicate in game.

Nostalgia goggles. Aka something that is exaggerated, misunderstood and cannot actually apply psychologically in the way gamers use it to excuse bad changes. Easiest way to dismiss the shortcomings of multimillion dollar corporations.

Alongside the "It is old that is why sales dropped 21%!" Nonsense.

When games like WoW made good changes they beat old sales record. Then they made bad changes and it dropped again.

Wolfeur1 votes

The fact that League is still one of the most relevant games nowadays both casually, competitively and in the streaming community indicates that mere popularity isn't the cause of its success. For a game to stay that strong that long, it has to have high quality. It's also surprising how everyone's favorite season is the one when they started playing, or the one after.

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

Once your product has enough name recognition you can stop providing quality or ruin your name with a lot of customers and still float on top for years. It took over a decade to kill Sonic sales as they put out games the fans didn't like. Granted they have regained some sales now that they put out a couple decent games. Point being you cannot crash an entire brand that easily. Especially nowadays when there are so many millions of potential customers. I hate how the game is now but have almost came back several times due to liking the brand and knowing people who play still.

No it didn't o.O The original system didn't even HAVE roles. You called out in chat like you do in Blind pick right now.

That was until Season 6. Season 6+ have ALL been consecutive pick, and role swapping was not part of the mechanic, but rather voluntary, and you can STILL do that.

Dragon gave gold and XP instead of a buff, so it was a weighed rather than necessary objective. TTKs were much higher, insta-gibs had to be heavily itemised for. (some exceptions like Veigar) CDR was rarer, so champions would have to give up damage and/or durability to acquire it. Items were less specialised, so a lot of their gold effectiveness were leeched from certain champions. There were multiple build paths for your champions and might even be able to go AP or AD. Scaling wasn't so harsh, so off-meta things like AD Ahri were viable. Wards were purchasable or placeable w/ an item called Ruby Sightstone. Support items had no quests, and were mostly GP/5 items w/ a neat active. Support kits weren't so chained to duo play, some supports were popular in solo lanes too. Suports had a much lower income. Annie was the beta APC support, too risky to do on just about everyone. The amount of champions that could ignore walls was much lower. Towers were a bit meatier, think at the time inhib turrets shot lasers. Jungle had much lower respawn timers. Jungle had much higher champion diversity. Level 2 ganks were cheese, not the meta. Gutted champions were weak, but still somewhat viable. Runes and masteries were incredibly influential, but not nearly as much as today.

etc...

This has to do with a lot of social reasons as well groups like L9 and Tyler1 rising popularity and people actually enjoying this kind of stuff it’s like the community has took a step back.

I even noticed this from some other streamers as well on Twitch they aren’t afraid of venting their frustrations anymore publicly. Even guys like Imaqtpie has had more for a passive aggressive tone than a banter tone than he use to. I was watching Gosu awhile back and he was literally telling people to “get the fuck out of my chat” but what fuck even happened to NB3 dead streamer now that’s promoting toxicity for clout.

When you have people who are promoting your game but are also toxic it leads to a general sense of toxicity. Do you honestly think Tyler1 is reformed? Fuck no, he would still run it down if he could and I guarantee you that, but he doesn’t cause he knows he’s on a radar that anything he does will automatically be published publicly and go viral.

Even Scarra has said this game feels more toxic than its ever been.

Would you be able to stay mentally stable when your job is to play league all day? Especially maining ADC with the current state of the game will make you physically sick and I'm not overstating that. On one hand those streamers make a lot of money, on the other hand they have to endure this ridiculous mental pain that is maining ADC. I hope it won't have long term effects on them. I am geniuenly concerned about them, that's how bad the state of the game is balance-wise.

i play fallout 76 instead of league if given the choice. the damage is too high in league where one/two deaths is automatic loss in lane maybe the game. top gets hard camped i dont know why there isnt a anti ganking shield there to prevent this abuse over and over again. if i had to update this game i would put 6v6 game at least the top lane would have a buddy instead of a 2v1 all game long.

now in fallout 76 people who are strangers who you just met gives you stuff with no payment necessary theres almost (because theres always some level of grief) no toxicity in the game. people can join in on your fight to equal the odds. the damage feels more "fair" than the one shots in league it feels like playing call of duty if 2 champs are close enough.

the main reason i play league now is if my brother goes on or my controller needs to charge probably 1 or 2 games probably stop if i lose that day. i dont know it feels empty since damage is so high you can savor that moment between 2 dueling champs its either poke hard= no counterplay or sustain hard= unkillable tank adcs with crazy halo styled shields/revives by a immortal untouchable support you just wanna smash or why bother existing in that lane = bursty call of duty kills (cough cough rengar empowered Q attack speed op).

Toxicity is so much deeper than balancing issues. Humans in general are emotional and flawed, and that's ever-more present in gaming communities. When it comes down to it EVERY single online multiplayer game is going to have balancing issues throughout the entirety of its lifespan, and those decisions are made by teams of people that are far from perfect, but always have the players in mind. Anybody that can't deal with that fact and exercise a little bit of patience with game developers just has issues of their own. Granted, there are times they neglect to fix an issue for way too long (Brig in Overwatch for example), and voicing your opinions on certain issues is absolutely necessary for the betterment of the game. However, there is a responsible way to do so. If that fails and it seems like the game your playing will never be fixed, simply stop playing it. That may sound like it's asking a lot because if you're like me, you devote a lot of yourself to the games you like to play, but what does that matter if you don't like the play the game? No matter how great of a game it might be in theory, if you're not having fun, don't take it out on the game, or the other people trying to play it, just go. I played over watch religiously for two years straight while taking a hiatus from league of legends and it drained the hell out of me. I felt myself getting more and more toxic over time when the things I wanted changed weren't being addressed, and lost the hope the hope that things will get better anytime soon, if ever. I directed that negative energy towards the game and towards other players because that's just the kind of environment the community molded itself into. Everyone is dissatisfied but can't let go, (because face it the world of Overwatch is incredible, how can you?) , and constantly feed off each others salt instead of attempting to try something different. Like I said, in any competitive multiplayer game there are going to be balancing problems that will always need to be fixed, that's the nature of the games, that's part of what makes them so enjoyable, but toxicity is not a direct result of that. While in-game issues certainly can have an affect on the player-base and feed their negativity, it's ultimately up to each player as an individual to make healthy decisions that will impact the community overall. I used to be like the rest of the League community, pouring my salt on top of other players' salt and just making one big salty mess. After a long break from the game, I've grown enough to realize all the bitching isn't at all worth it. I've found this game a million times more enjoyable when you go into each game with a positive attitude and treat your teammates with respect. When they miss an ult I don't ping them 1000000 times, they missed the ult, they know they fucked up, getting mad at them and flaming is only going to make them much more likely to miss the next one. I've experienced countless teams tilt each other into the abyss before the first tower even gets downed, and it has everything to do with individual psychology and nothing to do with balance. I could give a damn what the meta is and who or who isn't overpowered, there are 120+ champions, at some point someone is going to be the strongest, the only deciding factor in whether or not I have fun that game is how my team interacts, which 99% of the time is like a bunch of 10 year olds. Which you just can't let get to you. if somebody in game is pissing you off, reacting with the same energy is only going to be a win in their book. Even if I'm 0/5, I won't start to get tilted until someone in my game says something. Then that bad start turns into 0/10 and an entire 30 minutes of my life is just ruined because someone else can't keep their mouth shut. Anyone can get over a bad game, it happens sometimes, it's the other players' energies that have the biggest impact on your psyche. The next time you play just try being legitimately nice and friendly to your teammates, and even the enemy team and see how much better of an experience you have. I guarantee, at least in y our eyes, win or lose, the game will be much more fun. And that single positive experience will trickle into the community and overtime make it less toxic as a whole. If there's someone toxic in your game, mute them, don't reply at all, just mute them and go on with your game. Even mute/all if you have to, I do at the start of almost every game now and it makes it much more enjoyable, just takes away the interpersonal aspect of the game that I crave. Which, there in-lies my biggest problem with the current state of League. I'm a pretty lonely guy, and like many other people, I like to play these games to help me feel a little less depressed, and it's really frustrating when I can't communicate with the people I'm playing with because I run the risk of them being so toxic that I end up feeling worse than I did when I got on.

TL;DR Balance isn't what's wrong with LoL, it's people as individuals that ruin the experience.

I see a lot of comments saying, "League isn't the issue! PEOPLE are the issue!" False, and let me tell you why. League of legends has changed a LOT with their punishment system over the years. I have played since season 2 or 3 and acted the same the entire time. Not once did i even get a chat ban until right around season 6 or season 7. Since then, I have racked up 10 permanent suspensions with two accounts currently on two week suspensions. The game IS in fact the problem. Riot is cracking down more and more on players and in my opinion, it just makes me want to be actually toxic. My last two week suspension was mostly in part to me calling people "kids". I am not even joking with you. I laughed at the rioter who tried to clarify. If riot could fix matchmaking and balancing, that might fix a vast majority of the toxicity. But I don't think they care enough to do anything about it. They prefer to just ban you into silence (band-aid) rather than fix the core issues leading to toxicity (surgery).

I'm not gonna read the post ( mostly cause i've seen enough of these the last 9 years).

Game is bad = people are toxic. Game is good = only stupid people are toxic and get rightfully banned.

Countless people can stay neutral and just vent after they get 20-30 trash games in a row and get tilted and get banned and then the acc is on warning and we all know ( specially me ) how easy it is ot get banned on a 13day warning level.

I wouldnt blame someone crying in chat after getting consistently oneshotted by one two component irelia's and Akalis.

I stopped playing after failing my fifth Platinum promotions. The new ranking system is awful and introduced more problems then it fixed. Quick rundown:

  • LP splash is inconsequential
  • If your in promotions for one role LP gains made using another role don't count towards your promotions, but LP losses count towards all your roles
  • Provides no incentive to play anything, but your primary role

IMO the overarching issue is that LP is awarded only to players who win their games. You can do awful or even try to lose your game, but if your team carries you to victory your still getting more LP then the S/A rank players on the losing team. There's no incentive to do well if you expect to lose, which is why players give up 5 minutes into the game, spam surrender votes, throw the game, argue with their team, etc. If your not going to win it's a waste of time and effort. What's the point of awarding player's points on their individual performance if it has no bearing on climbing the ladder? I would be more enthusiastic to play out difficult games if I knew I could reduce the amount of LP I'd lose.

Jennagan2 votes

There are reasons why this game is trash.

Game time & personal time wasted from long games ( Wouldn't you rather wait 2 extra minutes in a queue to be able to play your specified role? WE DONT WANT OFF-ROLE) People ban each other as a retaliation weapon. What is this Club Penguin? Solo queue is not solo queue when you face duo's, smurfs, trolls and are expected to beat kids who are boosting accounts and selling them. This boosting and botting of accounts is popular due to the demand for banned players to buy new accounts at a cheap price. AKA Riot's strict rules are causing diamond smurfs to make new accounts and play against silver kids. Too many changes to the game, Patches, changes to champions, new champions etc. No new players because of barriers to entry. Game is too complex for new players to enter, this is caused from the issues mentioned above. The need for Grinding hours in Ranked and resets from new seasons are putting players in divisions lower than their true rank. This causes them to spend exponential time getting back to their designated level.

Overall, spending 30-40 minutes per game locked in to be reliant on 4 other players to do their job in "solo queue"; it is not worth our time because of the variables mentioned above. They need to decrease the time spent playing to roughly 20-30 minutes and make major changes to the game.

Basically, if Riot wants the game to be good again, they need to tell everyone they screwed up and ACTUALLY CHANGE THE STRUCTURE OF THE GAME. Instead of... "Hey the game is getting changed 1 patch at a time to tailor the game to fit what we want it to be....instead of what our customers want"

By good again, I mean the game fell off since Season 3.

This game is never going to be balanced just because with a huge pool of 140+ champions, any rune change and item will break the game in unforseeable ways.

Therefore balance cant be and will never be achieved.

Your best bet is playing whatever is broken in each patch if you want to stay relevant in competitive.

I kept thinking "this patch will make the game balanced" since before season 1 but look. 9 years later and every patch created some kind of r%%%%%ed imbalance that angered a portion of the community because their champion became useless or X champion too annoying to lane against

But they don't even try to balance

They are trying to balance it with every patch, its just that every patch fixes 5 problem and creates 5 other problems that they try to fix the next patch and it goes into a full circle.

I call this the state of perpetual imbalance.

The game will never be balanced so if you want to keep playing you have to accept that you need to play whats meta IF you play for rank / competitive.

You can still pick w/e in normals and ARAM and not give a shit too
