Hard CCing Tahm Kench should make him spit out allies early.

I remember the designer of Tahm was asked this on ask.fm and he said that they tried this but decided against it. The reasoning was that this made his W extremely unreliable and unsatisfactory to use, mainly due to the large amount of AOE CC that can randomly hit tahm.

kile1471 votes

I agree that this suggested change would be an extreme hit to his reliability, but what if instead damage and cc on Tahm while he was devouring someone (friend or enemy) would reduce the time he could hold them in? It would still make his devour a reliable save and damage source, but would give his opponents some sort of counter play.

This would be a bad change in my opinion. I've played quite a lot of Tahm being the support main that I am, and although some people will think that I'm biased towards him, I do know the champ and kit fairly better than plebs that just complain without having firsthand knowledge. Gameplay wise, it would make him less of a reliable source, spitting out immediately, when you can already CC him with an ally inside, and potentially get both as a double kill. And, thematically, why would a demon let loose something just for being stopped by spells? Kench doesn't seem like the silver-tongued fellow to let go of his quarry until they want out, so it just doesn't seem like a good idea for this interaction with hard CC

I think that just hard cc would be too big of a nerf, but maybe make it so that by dealing enough damage to him (something around 20% his total health maybe, so that even when low he won't spit his ally with 1-2 hits) should make him spit his ally/enemy instantly. This would create a great mechanical counterplay, where if the enemy can manage to damage him enough, he wouldn't just escape with 100 hp and save both him and his ally, but if a tahm is smart (and not too muh behind), he will use his shield right before a hard cc/right after it so that his shield would usually cover him for enough damage to prevent that. This would also be a bit of a nerf just in duo lanes since in solo lanes, when he eats you, you won't really be able to damage him without help from an ally, making him a strong pick for solo lanes and a strong, but not straight-up frustrating support. His devour is a bit too oppressive right now, but as a support he's not really OP, just a tad bit too strong.

SociopathFriend1 votes

That's pretty much what I tell people, and I don't even use Tahm Kench. Now, maybe something like a percentage of his current health would be decent- but just hard CC? Naw, that's BS and would be far too extreme of a nerf.

Raidarc1 votes

How about limiting it to single-target CC, can't be THAT hard.

Ralanr5 votes

It would make sense with LeeSin ult to be honest.

Twisted Tea4 votes

If Tahm had to take any sort of "nerf", I'd prefer either this idea, or losing the second health bar (or at least such easy access to it).

The only thing this would actually accomplish is make Thresh with his lantern the number one pick again. I completely understand Tahm Kench can be frustrating to play against, but I don't understand how it's any different from what Thresh has been doing so far.

Anidan7 votes

Because Thresh can't take an ally that's currently stunned and remove them from danger. You can also stand on Thresh's lantern to effectively remove it from play (you can't always do it, but often enough to warrant bringing up). You have no actual answer at all for Tahm's Devour on an ally: similarly, you have no answer at all for Kalista ulting her Oathsworn.

I wouldn't mind Tahm Kench if his devour had some form of counterplay, but it really doesn't. You don't want to CC the tank, so when you CC the squishy then the tank can just run in and save them for nothing. If you CC the tank, then the squishy gets to continue kicking your ass and Tahm succeeded anyway.

Quantum Lotus1 votes

Thresh lantern has a range, Tahm w range is soooo much smaller. If thresh could save people that were cc from such a long range, that would be broken as hell. Tahm has to be right next to them.

I'd say you have a point, but then, I like seeing Thresh being situationally worse than another support.

At least Thresh can be killed. Tahm is absurdly tanky.

If as an adc you don't want to build QS then Mikael's Crucible is a good option for the support. It says that it can target the holder so a support may even be able to use it on themself if need arises but idk if devour suppresses item actions.

I would like that he can't devour allies who are stunned, knocked up, down, sideways etc, and suppressed ones.

That is the whole point of his w in the first place. To save allies. They tried making that the case (what you stated) when testing out Tahm before release and the team working on Tahm didn't like it. You people want him to be a useless stun bot. He is meant to have his w to save people.

If he's going to have that much utility, and he's meant to, then remove the majority of his damage. He has just as much utility as thresh, but far, far more damage, stickiness, global presense, and much shorter CDs.

That would be a good argument if his W did only that, you're forgetting that it chomps over 30% of enemy max health plus it puts him away from the fight for 2-3 seconds, that skill is too powerful, it has near ult power overall, him not able to pick up stunned wouldn't make him useless, if you're great you're gonna do it before the stun lands, so that would work, but someone already affected by ex. a morgana snare shouldn't be able to escape so easily.

Quantum Lotus2 votes

This would ruin his kit and make him not fun at all to play... I have saved so many people with w even when cc, but that is what Tahm brings to a game. You have to play a bit differently with Tahm Kench in the game and that is exactly what Riot wanted. Tahm is my main top laner and he has so many weaknesses I don't know why people keep complaining about him.

If you are a ranged champion and vs Tahm, you should be able to kitte him easy. He is slow as hell and he wont be building attack speed. Stay behind minnions so he cant q, fight him when his w is down. FIGHT HIM WHEN HIS W IS DOWN. FIGHT HIM WHEN HIS W IS DOWN. W is so important to his kit I cant stress this enough. FIGHT HIM WHEN HIS W IS DOWN. And try to dodge those Qs.

His early game is horrible as well because most Tahm's don't get e until level 3 and all his damage comes when he hits level 6 (his passive damage from his ult). I assure you that if you all in a Tahm pre 6 and away from his turret so he cant spit you into it, you will win the trade, if not get him to burn flash or kill him.

So him not being broken would make him not fun to play at all? Guess that makes sense. His kit is very binary and boring. He's so straightforward that he should be easy to lane against, yet, for the majority of champs, its not. Your argument is rather poor.

Also, what Tahm wastes his W like what you're suggesting. His Q is fast enough that unless you're specific champs, dodging won't be reliable. "Just dodge the spears." Trying to duel him is basically asking for someone else to finish the job because you aren't getting away any time soon.

Tahm's base damages without his ult are pretty high already. His ult is a large part of what makes him broken. You saying his early game is weak is saying more about you than it is about him.

ChaosThief1 votes

He isn't broken, just incredibly frustrating. He's similar to a juggernaut looking at his kit.

Broken =/= frustrating. Yes, he is strong, and yes it is hell to play against him because of this granted safety, but broken doesn't cut it here.

And if you still think otherwise, look up release xin zhao.

These are all valid points.

Counterpoint: Tahm Kench DESTROYS pro teams. 80% win rate at Worlds. Pros rely so much on the one time their poke lands that having someone negate that ruins their game.

When Banshee Veil was destroying pro games it got its cooldown increased by 20 seconds.

Tahm is going to be nerfed. Sorry.

I've played against Tahm top, it wasn't that bad, actually. But when he's a support, which is where most people take him to my knowledge, he's a pain in the ass. If he's getting ganked he eats his ADC and runs away. If a team fight goes bad he eats whoever survives and runs off, and the cool down of his w isn't that bad from what I've experienced. I've waited it out on a bush, then after he uses it I go in for a gank and somehow he has it back up again.

I don't mind his damage, or his grey health or even his ability to either save a teammate from everything under the sun if they get caught out or take an enemy with his stacks on them out of a fight for a few seconds, but put all of it together and he's painful to play against. What the OP is asking for isn't that bad, it's just asking for him and his teammate to be punished if Tahm gets CC'd after he eats someone.

The Ecdysiast2 votes

That would remove the whole point of the ability.

Maybe a specific CC, like Knockup or Fear, but not all hard CC.

I'm sure they'll change him before the season because of how toxic is kit is currently. It's a well thought out kit, but it still remains to be way too safe. I think this would be a simple and accommodating change to his kit without ruining his viability.

RyzeRework1 votes

i mean what would the point in playing tahm kench be then lol

Old Man Teeto1 votes

The ability has enough counterplay already since he has to choose to use it defensively, or offensively and the CD is fairly steep.

This change would mean Kench would use it offensively almost 100% of the time.

Also what dictates a Hard CC truly for this interaction?

Blitz Hook? Naut Hook? Bard Ult? Singed/Volibear flip?

Would he vomit them out before or after the CC effect? Does whoever he ate come with him or stay behind? Are they Zhonya'sed by Bard or not?

Get's technical real fast, let this one rest.

ImNotTicklsh1 votes

This. This change would just remove him from a support role and put him in a top/jg role.

If you ever see Tahm eat your team mate, blow up the adc. See tahm eat a minion? Blow up the adc. See tahm eat anything other then your priority target? blow that target up.

The CD limits it to essentially 1 devour per team fight, maybe 2 if its a real long, kite back and forth kind. But really you can mess that up real bad by trying to push a wave out or eating an enemy right before your team gets jumped on.

And with the incoming movement speed nerf to it that ability might already have been hit too hard.

Ultraboomer1 votes

I only partially disagree with this. people will usually jump out voluntarily if tahm is hit was hard cc, however I feel any effect that knocks tahm airborne should eject people from his stomach and knock them up for half the duration.

RamboDash151 votes

I agree that his mobile item 3157 is a tad unfair, but with the amount of aoe cc in the game he should get something back if it happens; such as half the cooldown refunded (or even refreshed at a temporary increased mana cost)

ImNotTicklsh1 votes

The only problem is that I feel like this nerf would completely remove him from a support role. The whole point of a support is to come with some form of utility (usually a hard cc). I think the reason why Tahm is so strong right now is not because his kit is that incredibly strong (although very strong), but because people are so used to "focus the adc" that when Tahm shows up and you realise "oh shit I should have saved that cc for Tahm" he's already scooped up the stunned adc to live another day.

I mean take soraka for instance, you will lose in lane if you ignore her and try to focus down the adc, but you focus her and keep the adc exhausted/cc'ed? You will win the lane every time. If you take that mentality into a game against Tahm, he eats the adc, you stun him, he sits there with the adc screwed because he's stuck inside Tahm, Tahm eventually spits him out because he runs out of time, finish off the adc. You cause him to spit out the adc on CC command and all you've done is moved tahm from support to top/jg.

Wimbledofy1 votes

How about while tahm is cc'd the person inside is able to use heals/shielding abilities? This allows them to have some chance of living. ( I mean people that aren't on tahms team can use heals, not people that are on his team)

ImNotTicklsh1 votes

Thats too huge a nerf imo, I play a LOT of tahm and there definitely is enough counter play already with his devour, you just have to play with that in mind against him. ie. Wait until he devours to hook with thresh to essentially hook both. Or any hard CC on Tahm while he has someone inside him makes it to where they are both stuck there.. Idk, I feel like thats the one aspect of his kit that is essential for who tahm is, and so its hard to touch it without him becoming completely useless. Useless as a support at least. The removing of the movement speed buff is going to be a huge nerf in and of itself, Im interested to see how that plays out.

Partholonian1 votes

I disagree, instead, hard CC on Tahm should prevent him from swallowing the ally in the first place. This rewards landing your CC at the right time rather than just throwing it out after Tahm has already made his move.
