Competitve overcoming Fun

Every recent champion rework or release has been very unique in a competitive play style. They all have a very straight forward build and it's hard to play around with it for fun. Let's compare an old champion and a recent champion. Jhin, the most recent marksman, very popular and fairly unique, and he was used often in LCS. Compared to Karthus, one of the first champions, very straight forward playstyle, and hasn't been touched ever since release. We're not comparing power play, but generally as a champion. I'll sum this up in one point...

Should Riot continue going to the competitive style with all the unique mechanics and intense counterplay? or should Riot invest back into the fun element of league, and making straight forward fun champions? Discuss!
