Nautilus Changes

You guys remember the New Dawn Cinematic? How Nautilus was basically one of the most iconic villains of the cinematic because HE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO GOT A KILL, TWO KILLS! Well, I personally think Nautilus should feel that way in-game, because he is kind of lack luster right now. He needs to retake his place as the king of crowd control.

Nautilus NAUTILUS

Base Stats

  • Health per Level increased to 90 from 86
  • Base Mana increased to 315 from 284
  • Movement Speed increased to 330 from 325
  • Size increased please!

Staggering Blow

How it should feel like to be hit by Staggering Blow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzHrjOMfHPY#t=246

  • Bonus Base Physical Damage increased to 10 from 2
  • Bonus Physical Damage per Level increased to 7 from 6
  • On-target Cool Down reduced to 6/5.5/5/4.5/4 seconds from 9/8/7/6/5 seconds
  • (A Maybe Change) During Titan's Wrath, the primary target will get knocked in the direction of your cursor 300 units, stopping if they were to collide with a wall and taking 25% of the Staggering Blow damage again

Dredge Line

  • Can now be charged, allowing the anchor to pierce through a wall after 1 second of channeling
  • Cool Down decreased to 17/15/13/11/9 seconds from 18/16/14/12/10 seconds
  • Mana Cost changed to 65/70/75/80/85 mana from 60/70/80/90/100 mana

Titan's Wrath

  • Titan's Wrath bonus magic damage is all applied instantly to minions and monsters
  • Mana Cost reduced to 60/65/70/75/80 mana from 80 mana at all ranks

Riptide

  • Range increased to 800 from 600
  • Now shoots out 4 pulses from 3 pulses
  • Base Magic Damage per Wave decreased to 45/85/125/165/205 from 60/100/140/180/220
  • Mana Cost reduced to 60/65/70/75/80 mana from 60/70/80/90/100 mana

Depth Charge

  • Pass-through Knock Up Duration increased to 0.75 seconds from 0.5 seconds

Majority of these buffs are small. but there a few buffs that can make a difference and make Nautilus known as the King of Control again. Lots more AoE CC going around much more often and more reliability on his Riptide at the cost of some base damage, which was never it's main use anyway. Thoughts on what should stay on this list or leave?

That's my favorite concept here. Not sure I would want the following, fully charged Dredgeline triggering passive. Might actually reduce CC time.

Since we are talking about Nautilus, I had my own idea of a new passive for him to better fit his theme, or what I think this theme "Should" be.

Yeah, I always feel like as Nautilus that Im so restricted with how I engage or gank. It is usually pretty predictable and usually goes down with I walk into Q range and Q rather than something like in the cinematic where Nautilus just comes from no where and starts wrecking. Also, I can see what you mean with the fully charged not applying the passive, it might reduce CC times by 0.5-0.75 seconds. It could be done to where it is applied when Nautilus "chest bumps" them, but that would still possibly reduce CC time slightly. Also, thanks for commenting.

Mine too and I think that alone would help him out a lot. Although he probably needs something else too lol

Be honest with me doc, will Nautilus be recieving buffs any time soon, more specifically, will his size be increased?

No plans I know of on his size. Buy more Elixirs of Iron. :) He has some buffs scheduled for next patch; should already be on PBE!

As long as those buffs lets him feel like he is a giant metal titan swinging around a anchor larger than he is...

when you are hit by dreadgline you are pulled and then he wants the charged to stun on top of that? way too much CC if you ask me.

I am all for buffing Nautilus but literally making him do absolutely everything he does about 10 times better with zero trade offs is not how you do balance.

I was actually more intending for a big list that I could slowly remove things from as players responded. Although I think the one thing that needs to say are the mana cost reductions. Nautilus' costs are freaking huge for what some of his abilities do. His Q is single target and his E doesn't even do much crowd control. His W is ok, but not worth 80 mana at Level 1, but definitely at Level 5.

LordOfTheLeague

I agree with you. I think nautilus is fine right now but his mana cost are just too damn high. With the shield buff he should get next patch that could be enough buffs to be in a good spot.

Yo big nautilus fan here. Even though I dont play him much, he was my first 6300 champ.

Loving the concepts here, im not sure how the piercing dredge line would work. Does it pull you through the wall too or just pull them into the wall? I like the idea of smacking people so hard they get knocked back, but I think he would need a major size buff for that to feel proper. Would it work similarly to Kalista's passive? In the sense that you choose the direction during the animation wind up?

I know this probably isnt your field, but any chances of getting a little lore with the update? I mean something else he is involved in, the cinematic and mention with the shadow isles mist were nice, but a little more context? Like I never understood why Nautilus was rivals with Nami and Fizz on the page. I got the vibe it was just so that no one had an empty page, but I always got the neutral vibe from nautilus not villain. Honestly though I tend not to assume champs are "evil" from their appearance, I dont see morg as evil like a lot of people do, more chaotic. Sure Nautilus looks evil and menacing but I figured him to be more driven to find the people who betrayed him and not really interested in anyone/anything else.

Sorry about the many questions Appreciate any response

Let him keep the damage buff for the full shield duration, even after the shield breaks. He's not having fun in the jungle and really doesn't have anywhere else to go.

B3ER1 votes

The jungle isn't a nice place for 0 sustain champs. Don't know where Rito was going with that.

I feel like that can be changed by giving him a lee-sin style lifesteal on one of his skills, I think he has a shield in his kit right? Just stick it right there and wammo, sustain complete.

B3ER1 votes

Its not just Nautilus that needs it. All tank junglers need this. Riot needs to put more jungle staying power into Machete.

Delioth1 votes

The problem with putting it on machete is that it'll buff all other junglers along the way- Yeah, Nautilus and Hecarim will benefit, but Lee Sin and whoever else is strong in the jungle right now will benefit equally, and probably end up getting even better results from it. Long story short, you need to put the buffs on the champions, otherwise strong champions will just become stronger while the weak become mediocre. Strong>weak, and Stronger is still >Mediocre.

B3ER1 votes

The idea I was going with is that sustain junglers can first clear level 3 with full hp while most other junglers need to recall between buffs. If Machete gives %dmg reduction against monsters, then the sustain junglers still do the first clear while other junglers get more options.

In this case, the sustain junglers don't gain anything considering they're already getting the maximum benefit that the current Machete iteration has to offer. In that case, if there are oppressive outliers such as Lee and Rek'Sai, then those 2 champions can be nerfed accordingly.

Holistically, I see this to be a healthier and easier change than buffing every tank jungler in the game. I say healthier because stat/kit buffs affect the champion in PvP cases as well (such as laning, should the player choose to play Support Naut for example). You want the response of a balance change to only cause changes within your considered philosophy. While this is impossible, scattered responses can be minimized, but now I'm just rambling.

exiledFromBadmen1 votes

Maybe it shouldn't be into machete. How about adding armor and HP5 into Juggernaut?

Cerbearus1 votes

And oh lord the time it takes to get that first auto off. It is so damn easy to cancel it because casting any spell interrupts auto attacks.

Riptide: Upswirls an energy vortex around Nautilus that climbs higher and higher.

  • Range starts at 600 and both pushes out to 850 and in to Nautilus as the vortex rises
  • When the vortex reaches Nautilus, it reverberates outward 250
  • Allies hit by the vortex gain 15 MR for 1/1.2/1.5/2/3 seconds
  • Enemies hit by the vortex are stunned for 1/1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4/1.5 seconds and lose 15 MR for the duration and take 225 (+77/85/95/110/125)% AP
  • 3 mana gained per enemy hit

Make Staggering Blow stun non-Champion units?

That wouldn't change much but make him much more survivable in the jungle.

And his mana costs just look wrong when I play against him :/

My fucking sides.

He needs bigger model and higher base MS.

I wouldn't mind the Q change so it actually feels different than the other hooks/pulls in the game. Too bad we probably wont get a dev in here.

ooooh you dont want that at the moment nautiluss's model looks like a big round plump guy they need to make his model more manliike before making him bigger otherwise he will just look obese

Well, that's overkill, but the sad state of things is that if you want to play a hulking monster with a feeling of power in your moves, you play Sion... :/

Pretty good list of possible Nautilus changes. Suggestions like this should be way more appreciated, however contains some crazy ideas. There is no logical way that he can pull over his huge body through any terrain with that anchor and there is nothing magical about that physical object. The current PBE changes about the giant shield of Nautilus can make poke champions really miserable. That is something that I don't like.

Kobila20001 votes

I absolutely love the Q channel idea! I would definitively not give him more damage if he's going to get better cc. This is something incredibly stupid that Riot is doing in the form of Leona and some other champions. If you want to be packed with tons of cc, then you should not be able to also dish out a ton of damage.

Borbland1 votes

Nice buffs, but it's maybe a bit too much.

I would let the cooldowns like they are, mana is already reduced.

Giving bonus damage, better CC, damage and CD reduction is a bit too much.

Nautilus isn't even weak or unplayable right now, he's just too slow in the jungle and with high manacost which makes him blue dependend...

Bongo Johnson1 votes

Those Ratio changes are ridiculous. Do you want AD/AS Nauts running around like AP Yis? Charged Dredge line sounds awesome. His Sheild doesnt need to be different. It's a huge sheild and on top of that your autos do DOTs while its up. His ult range should be bigger maybe. His riptide range sounds a tad to big, its hard to know units, and how they actually look on the map so maybe down to 690 or 700 units. And The New Dawn is your example for the feel of his passive? holy shit thats huge. graves was on his ass picking up his rib cage, granted he was smacked with an anchor, it shouldnt do that much damage and stun that long.

junglerboy161 votes

You can already cast Dredge Line through walls, you just stand RIGHT next to the wall and then cast it with you mouse at the far end of its range on the other side. It is more of a bug, but it works every time, you just have to practice placing yourself well.

Increasing the damage on his passive is good. Decreasing the cool down is bad. If you want it to feel super impactful like the cinematic, then it should be high damage high cool down. The more frequently it is up, the less potent it begins to feel.

I like your idea for Riptide, more pulses but slightly lower damage is good.

Titans wrath dealing damage to minions/monsters immediately isn't a buff, and would mess with how the animation for it works. Mostly, just make the damage on-hit last whether the shield breaks or not, maybe have it be reduced by 50% if the shield breaks...

Depth charge change isn't that big of an issue. I don't care for it either way. It is a buff, but so small that I don't think it would matter.

CreativePickle

I really want to main Naut, but he's so difficult to play that I go in my room and cry after a few games playing as him. These buffs would not only greatly decrease the difficulty of Naut, but also make him WAY more fun to play. Well done! item 3151 Nautilus revived!{{summoner:10}}

RainbowIcee

what is your difficulty with him? i use naut all the time i love him. The amount of plays i've had with him are insane. + early to mid game I kill most champs with a few items and jungle buff. His wave clear is pretty good too.

CreativePickle1 votes

Unless you're building a fight nautilus, you don't do the most damage. As a matter of fact, aside from other champions, nautilus has one of the lowest damage outputs in the game. With the extremely weak staggering blow, to the E that tried, and the Q that's only good for ganking with a pull, and a shield almost bursted down immediately after a few ADC basic attacks or 2 or 3 mage abilities, Nautilus can also be one of the most useless. Now with THAT BEING SAID; I have to agree with you. Nautilus does make some of the best plays league has ever seen. knockups and pulls beyond compare are great, and exactly what any play maker needs.

His wave clear is good, but in the jungle, he has to recall a LOT before he reaches level 6, and even then, his campl clear time is pretty bad while he's getting beaten to death by the ancient golem and frog. Nautilus needs:

  1. a little bit of higher damage so he doesn't ONLY tank in a team fight , aside from his knock-up
  2. Better early game tank.
  3. Everything in the large discussion above.

Lol big explanation for something so little. But Nautilus is under-powered compared to most top laners and junglers. Enough said.

KenpachiKenshin

I think you put the damage increases on the right place (his passive) but I'm not sure buffing both the frequency it procs and damage is healthy. Lower trigger cooldown would mean more CC in the same time frame. It would also mean higher damage in the same time frame, even without the damage buffs you proposed.

I don't like the movespeed increase. He's supposed to be immobile.
Not sure how I feel about the charged dredgeline thingy. I like it but don't know if I want it.
Lowering the Q cooldown feels nice. Perhaps a bit more.
I like the new CC on his passive but I don't want it. That would make it the 5th CC skill for him.
E change is overshot. He's already hard to chase down as a tank, and sticky as one as well.
Not sure about the base stat changes.

I like your line of thought though. I like naut and I hope he gets some love soon ^_^.

What I feel he needs is better cooldown scaling and more some persistent damage threat other than his shield.
