Yeah, the HUD sucks, but just a little reminder that...
most likely, Rito probably won't revert the changes anytime soon. So which means, we'll probably have to adapt to that, no matter how much we love it or hate it, that's just how Rito works nowadays (honestly what's the point of PBE again? New content showcase?) since we're pretty much silent to their ears in terms of community feedback. I mean, it's probably their silly excuse to make things look shinier, right?
But hey, back to the silly HUD that (hardly anyone) likes. Does it need to be tweaked? Holy crap, definitely! I know this is like, such an original thread about the HUD but I guess I'm better off making some real solid points straight:
1. Teammates' HP/resource bars are too damn small. So say, you're the team's jungler, and needs to know how much health your laners have, so you know whether it's a good time to gank or not. Sure, you can move your camera to see how much HP they have, but for the sake of convenience, it's just too annoying (and especially since they're always running about) to do that while you should've just glanced at the left of how things are. Or you could be playing Soraka, and needs to know when to make a good use of your ult, so a quick glance of your teammates' HP would help you, like, a lot. Or you are ready for a teamfight, and want to see if your team's ults are up. With those icons so small, I don't think anyone can even see what the heck's going on, until they're dying! What's the solution? Make them bigger, at least big enough for people to tell how things are. If they're taking too much space, move them elsewhere! Or if even better, the ability for people to resize the icons.
2. Unclear ability icons. This one's rather hard, but the leveling up AND the "ready to cast" effects looked way too similar to abilities when you are OOM to cast it. Also, it's just as hard to tell when an ability isn't learned yet vs. on cooldown. If this explanation is too confusing for you, just think of this: As Riven, you thought you are OOM. I don't care how they should be changed, but should be enough to tell that all 4 statuses of ability icons should be distinct, period. These 5 are: Leveling up, OOM, on CD, ability ready to cast, and not learned yet.
3. Champion/summoner names in the tab menu. This one isn't really that important, but without the names, this game feels like a game made in a language that you probably don't understand, even though you can mouse over to see more information. It just makes the entire thing look really... empty, but that's just my opinion. Also, it took me a while to figure out how to mute players. Maybe implement some kind of "show names on scoreboard" kind of option? Sounds like a good idea IMO.
4. No "send all" button for chatbox. This is more of a person opinion, since I've grown used to typing first, then hitting the "send all" button when chatting. Yes, I know typing "/all" or hitting shift+enter enters the /all chat mode, but it's just... ugh, not fun forcing myself to get used to that...
Otherwise, the HUD update is pretty and shiny, makes the screen so much clean from clutter, and isn't that bad once you get used to it. However, I think the proposed changes are what's in need for change. Heck, if Rito isn't that lazy, I'd hope there's some form of customization in the HUD, other than just the size alone (but let's get real here, making different assets of the same things is probably too much work in terms of Rito definition).
/End rant And... that's that. I hope I summed up why many people don't like the new HUD, but if there's anything I missed, feel free to drop in complaints to discuss, along with dozens of HUD related threads out there. Ahem, other than the fact that it's almost completely revolutionary in terms of layout since season 2 or something.
