About class updates and Kog'Maw's reverts.

So, in previous season Riot Games started a new trend in LoL which is class updates, starting with Juggernaut update on patch 5.16. Said updates look something like this:

  1. Riot chooses few champions for mini-reworking, which's aim is to make the champion healthier gameplay wise as well as give those champions a "niche" to fill.
  2. Riot changes around existing items related to class and add the new ones. So far we had 3 class updates: juggernaut, marksman and mage, we also know that the next class to be reworked are assasins.

Now, probably the biggest problems of this updates are some of the reworks. For the purpose of this post, I would like to group all class update reworks we got to this day into 3 categories (it's all my opinion, you may disagree on those points):

succesful reworks - the reworks that succeded in reworking champions into more healthy versions of themselves and/or giving certain champions a good niche etc. To this category, I would assign champions like Darius , Caitlyn , Graves , Cassiopeia and to certain extend (although barely) Vladimir .

"meh" reworks - reworks that were unnecessary, but also didn't do too much harm. They are just there and some would question why did they even happen. Champions like Garen ,Corki , Velkoz Brand fall into this category .

** gimmick reworks** - the reworks that mostly failed. Their aim was to give certain champions a feature completely unique to them (gimmicks) to solidify their "niche", sometimes despite them having a healthy niche already. In some cases, they even made champions less healthy than pre-rework. Skarner , Mordekaiser , KogMaw and Malzahar come to my mind.

Obviously the biggest problem are the reworks that fall into third category - the gimmicks. Reworks that have been paned by community when they were on PBE, and when they hit live servers. In some cases, the playerbase was asking countless times for reverts of these failed reworks. Which brings us to this:

I don't want to quote too much from this post, because it will all be too long, but in nutshell: pre-rework Kog'Maw was a healthy champion that already had his distinctive niche. Riot aimed with this rework to solidify this niche even more, but failed to do so. Thus, they decided to PARTIALYrevert his rework to make him similar to what he was before the rework.

This statement from Riot made some members of our community ask: what about other champions? Why won't they get reverted? To answer this, we must determine what qualifies champion for a revert. From the Kog revert post I can say that these things are:

  1. The fact that rework failed - this is obvious.
  2. The fact that champion was healthy gameplay-wise pre-rework - sorry Morde mains, as much as a lot of people would love to see this (me including), there's no chances for Morde revert.

Imo, the only other champion that qualifies for this would be Malzahar (which I wish to all Malza mains to happen, I safely assume that most of you see this rework as a failed one). He was healthy pre-rework with clear counterplay and weaknesses. He had his niche, but Riot decided to focus more on his voidlings aspect, which didn't succeed too much. As to Skarner, I really don't know a lot about him, so I dunno if he would qualify to such revert, or even if people want him to be reverted. While his rework failed in few aspects, it didn't really make him broken or unplayable. Maybe some Skarner mains can tell me more about him.

I am really bad at finishing anything I write, so I'll just end this rant by inviting you to discussion: what do you think about class updates? About Kog reverts? Should there be more reverts like Kog's, if yes, which champions do you think deserve to get one?

Quinn ult rework fails for me in a simple area: it is a "morph" ability that does not interact at all with any of the other abilities Quinn has, therefore it feels kinda odd to just use R to dive and roam but for it to not have any other utility, I mean it could at least transform his Q into a dive ability to pass through walls (deals damage, stops upon reaching an enemy and stops ult), but meh, lets just make Valor into a taxi cab unable to cross walls.
