He's got that old school scaling where you need all 3 skills to do anything, most champions have that one skill that you can put points in and you'll be okay, but Amumu needs points in all of his skills. Like, it would be a balanced game if Amumu started the game at level 18, but unfortunately he doesn't, thats why

-Games will almost always hit late game -People have no clue how to play with early game champions -Guiding your teamates to win with a lead, especially low elo ones, is like pulling teethe with your bare hands
That's why late game champions like amumu, vayne, maoki, Fiora, and Ryze are some of the best champions to gain elo with. They are just champions that allow you to completely 1 v 5 in the late game. And well, unless you are a absolute God on a early game champion, why bother taking the risk of getting out scaled, when you can simply play the scaling game yourself and do it better?
