Items that have both offensive and defensive stats prevents item strategy/diversity.
First off I want to say that none of the items I address are blatantly OP or UP. The main problem with some items is the strategy involved in putting them in your build, meaning actually having a thought process to how you are going to build your character.
this item for example gives MASSIVE amounts of AP ontop of a MASSIVE shield. Why? Can't it just do one or the other and not both? There is no real strategy involved in picking this item up. You don't ask yourself "hmm, I'm using a lot of abilities... Should I get seraphs for the raw mana or morellos for the CDR+smaller ammounts of mana?". No, you instead TELL yourself "hmm, I'm
so I'm going to mindlessly pick up seraphs without any 2nd guessing because it gives me over 120 AP and a 1k shield."
vs
. Even tho both items give lethality and the same amount of AD, you are going to pick
every time because it gives BOTH defensive stats AND offensive stats. It even has a defensive active... Compare that to
which only gives raw offense and zero defense ontop of a passive that becomes redundant if you are stacking lethality and doing close to true damage anyway and the choice becomes blatantly obvious on what item you are going to choose.
is another example. Why do people chose
over
? Because protobelts active not only outweighs the stats GLP 800 give, but also because GLP 800s passive and active is absolute garbage in general in comparison to protobelt. Having to get hit to regain mana? A active that is less powerful than protobelts active because its missles don't stack, and its more expensive. So even tho the hextech item line should be an itemline that has the MOST strategic choice it doesn't because proto belt pretty much blows the other two items out of existence even after its nerf. The only exception to this is
on akali and kat because they make use of the hybrid stats gunblade gives.
IMO I don't think items with dual offensive and defensive stats should exist. Not only does it kill strategy involved in actually picking an item, but it overloads the item and the champion that is using it. That's why we have champs like
that can be both insanely bursty and insanely tanky at the same time.
this item for example gives MASSIVE amounts of AP ontop of a MASSIVE shield. Why?
, but it doesn't give any kind of defensive advantages now does it? Instead it converts your mana to even more dmg rather than do both.
. But these champs would never choose GLP because seraphs, morrellos, and RoA are instant zero thought buys for them. If you have long Cds the sustain from GLP 800 is worthless because its 25 HP MAX per spell, and usually you are healing for less than that.
