New champ select didn't make this clear, Teambuilder did. This has been so for a long time.

But it's the new champion select who made this clear for all players, since in the past you could just play on the old champion select if you wanted faster queue times, with the knowledge that you would probably have to play the role that you didn't wanted (including support)

The fact that very few people wanted to play support in the previous queue and that it was almost always one of the last picks made it clear that most people like the role the least. The new queue was not some new ground breaking discovery.

Its a no brainer. Most people like to try and carry. Kinda harder with supports. Possible, but harder.

It is possible, but going support does not give you that feeling you are being able to carry. Most people would rather play other lanes for this reason.

It's less that there are fewer people willing to play support, and more that there are people for whom support is a third or even fourth choice of role. Personally, I gladly play anything but ADC, and yet my inability to ADC well prevents me from clicking fill instead of queuing up for Top/Jung or Top/Mid.
