dorans ring vs athenes

at level 7, many ap mages will have around 10 mana regen and 575 mana. we will use these calculations to show how buying 2 dorans ring is far superior to buying athenes unholy grail. level 7-9 is fairly important as most mages need to spam abilities to clear waves farm up.

2 dorans ring offers 6 mana regen per 5. lets say you average 8 cs per minute. that is an additional 5.3333 mana regen per 5 for a total of 11.3333 per 5.

athenes will give 5 mana regen per 5. nothing more if you are at full mana. suppose you are at half mana. that is an additional 5.75 mana regen for a total of 10.75 per 5.

probably the average your mana bar will be at is around half, maybe more if you have blue buff or you're managing mana. the point is that spending 800 to get 2 dorans ring on average will offer more mana regen than spending 2700 to buy athenes.

well some retard is going to say athenes gives more stats. that's like no shit sherlock but lets see how much worth in stats you can get for 800.

2 dorans rings

30 ap = 652 120 hp = 320

by spending 800, you get 972 worth in stats + 11.3333 mana per 5.

1 athene's unholy grail.

60 ap = 1305 25 mr = 500 20% cd = 633

by spending 2700, you get 2438 in stats + 10.75 mana per 5.

lets redo calculations, but assume you're a pro who averages 12 cs a minute when in lane. this is ALMOST perfect cs.

2 dorans will give 6+8=14 mana regen per second. destroying athenes, morellos, or any other mana regen item.

note, 8 cs per minute is not very difficult, even the average bronze player can get that. the first 2 minutes of the game doesn't count and subtract 40 sec for every time you die because you are not in lane. so if you die 2 times in 10 minutes, 53 cs in 10 minutes is 8 cs per minute.

if you die 0 times and don't go back, 64 cs in 10 minutes is 8 cs per minute.

dying 0 times, perfect cs is 101 in 10 minutes if you don't go back and if you are not taking jungle minions/killing other things.

Most people, even up to the gold level, can't get perfect CS in a game. People who can do perfect CS under real conditions are the minority.

im not talking about cs overall though, im talking about csing while in lane.

dying/roaming is going to cost you a lot of minions, but you don't use it in the calculations since mana regen is important when you're in lane.

if you consider csing based on the time they have farming, then most people can get 11 cs per minute.

2/3 CS is not perfect CS. That's 80 at 12 mins and we are talking about the laning phase so that is reasonable.

Level 7 isn't when most people finish Athenes.

He's correct, actually. Athene's/Chalice were hit that hard. Doran's Ring, however, kept a flat 3 mp/5 plus its passive; if you're farming, it ends up giving around the same mana as a chalice (for cheaper). It is ridiculous how weak they made chalice and athene's.

Ok, lets do the math. Two doran rings eaul 6 flat mana regen per 5. 12cs per minute grants 48mana regen per minute/60 is .8mana per second times 5 is an extra 4 mana regen per 5. So two doran rings and perfect csing grants you 10mana per 5.

At level 7, mages will have roughly 10 mana regen per 5. Chalice/Athene's grants 50% mana regen per 5 and 2% of missing mana regen. If you're missing 250 mana your mana regen will be equal to two doran rings. If you're missing more than that your mana regen will be superior.

I agree that Athene's is a pretty shit item, but no one is forcing you to upgrade chalice. Chalice is still a useful and cost efficient mana regen item. Where's Rackier when you need him?
