How do I beat Olaf?

Bent Pixels·1/21/2020, 5:30:17 PM·5 votes·5,970 views

This is not a rant about how broken he is or anything, I'm genuinely asking. I recently picked up jungle since I was an Ekko mid one trick and turns out the tier lists are right when they say he's really good in the jungle, so I've just been spamming him in ranked and I'm doing really well.

I only have one real problem though, and that's Olaf. I don't think I've won a game against him as Ekko jungle and I'm really just looking for better ways to beat him other than perma banning him (since I would much rather ban Mordekaiser). Pre 6 he beats me just with the insane amount of lifesteal and attack speed he gets. Maybe if I land my stun I can burst him and kite him with my passive, but I don't have much damage until lich bane. And after 6, my stun and Q slows are useless on him and he just runs me down, and my R doesn't help me much with this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Grievous wounds, bursting him (especially from 40/50%->0, and during his ult when he loses a good chunk of armor and MR), kiting him when possible (you can always dash/blink away, or use speed ups to escape or dodge his Q, even when you can't CC him to kite him that way) and focusing him during ganks/teamfights are some decent things you can do vs him.

In particular, executes such as your E passive damage, or something like Garen/Riven/Darius/Urgot(though not when Olaf has R, as he can block Urgot R2 with his ult)/Jinx/etc ults are very potent against him as his lifesteal, healing and attackspeed all scale based off of his missing HP, so if you can burst him to low HP then execute him before he gets much damage off, there is not a whole lot he can do about it as an immobile pure melee, who is often trying to dive in to the backline each fight.

I'm a top main so I might not be much help here but i can tell you what counters olaf the most from seeing him in top lane match ups ( I'm 56% WR voli OTP , plat 4)

Two things : grievous wounds and health.

Health fucks up his reckless and because he doesn't normally build crit , if you get ninja tabi on top of health that's his dmg gone.

If you want to dmg him back , first gimp his heals -hence grievous wounds . Secondly get a dmg item , for ekko I have no clue, maybe Luden's... it's the best AP item IMO. CDR, mana , AP , bonus dmg ...

But yeah , olaf is strongly gimped by GW, health and ninja tabis.

Hope this helps McKuntalds

Dodge his Axe and only do short quick trades unless you know you can burst him quick

you need ignite to beat him. if your ult, and E and Q both ways, one hit of W passive and 3-proc passive don't kill him then you lose, he will outsustain you. now usually if you were lane ekko you would have an ignite, but you aren't lane ekko you're jungle ekko so you're gonna have to take a red smite and be willing to kite the olaf cause you aren't gonna get him in one rotation (you know this if you've played top lane ekko), you can get creative with the kiting.

if you don't want to take red smite then you will simply have to use your E over walls to get away from him, you can be real cheesy with it and bait out his ult if you want and just 'peace' over a wall. if he flashes then you ulti, won trade.

getting grievous wounds won't actually help once he get's spirit visage cause you won't have enough cdr to rotate on him again. getting the cdr won't help enough cause you won't have the grievous wounds to stop him healing. armor will just make you live longer, which makes olaf live longer. this is ofc assuming all things are equal between the pair of you. if you're ahead then you're ahead, shit plays itself from there i assume.

your best bet of getting ahead is early ofc, pre-6 cause your cc still counts for something. yes you can beat him post-6 if he has no ult but he would have to throw an axe to a bad spot or have been dumpstered (3 lvl diff or 1 item diff) W placement is everything, chief among all you must get the shield, do not bank on the stun, he won't get stunned. you can try saving your spell dmg for after he's ulted but you best be fed to be doing that.

Ekko is way way stronger rn than olaf. Basically just don't fight him lvls 1-5 without landing your w. Don't stand still and fight 1v1 without gw applied past 6. Dodge his first q and then kite the opposite direction, he will have 0 damage. Kite him with your massive q slow and passive ms boost and blink and r and then just kill him after poking him around for 30 seconds bc he shouldn't be able to touch you without ult

First of all why ban Morde as Ekko that doesn't make any sense, Ekko can make Morde useless with the Q slow and easy W setup as Morde is immobile and whenever he ults you you can kite him forever. About Olaf. Olaf is very good early game then falls off, you don't wanna fight him early that's what he does wins early duels he pretty much beats every jungler pre6 so you have to path to avoid him basically.

Don't be an idiot aka don't take fights you know you'll lose. If you're not confident against Olaf just don't fight him, focus on avoiding him and winning through that.

Olaf is a counter to Ekko and most other AP junglers. You don't beat him really, you avoid him and outscale. If you're looking for a champ that's good against him Sett is very good against him early and hard outscales, Graves with Fleet is another good pick. Kayn loses early but can avoid fighting and dumpsters Olaf when he gets Red Form.
