Tips for Jhin?

Bent Pixels··16 votes·17,984 views

I'm thinking of trying another adc rather than Vayne because she sucks ass early game, and after watching imaqtpie play a couple games as Jhin and i was like "Hey, this champion looks kinda fun. Im gonna try him out." So I did, and I really like him for his early game and he just feels really smooth for me. Oh, and ult is soooooo damn fun.

However, I'm not very good with him. I've played like 5 or 6 games or whatever, so I dont have much experience with him, but I still would just like some tips for him and how to time his passive, where to place his traps (E), which supports go well with him, his items and runes (although i looked on mobafire and found some pretty good stuff I just want the suggestions from this lovely community), etc.

Any help is appreciated. thank you!

Just don't be the jhin that only pulls up his R and watches fights from his satellite cam :)

Somehow I'm Mastery 7 on him despite being a support main... I don't have THAT many ordinary SR games but I've spammed him every game mode and got 7 pretty easy on SR.

Here's the basics: Jhin can not duel any adc. He must kite other ADCS until he can kill them with AA Q AA. Jhin can't burst assassins until late game Jhin sucks into tanks

Common issues: Don't start a fight on 4th shot When you're reloading, you're more a liability than a help. Reposition. Your R basically doesn't exist in combat. It's for snipes / slowing targets for picks. Using Q to farm / harass will push lane Watch your AA resets

Supports... I've not had many, but I'd say he's pretty solid with anything. The best support is the one that matches his needs in any given game. Jhin benefits from healing supports/shielding because they allow him to trade at literally no cost. He benefits from peel vs assassins. He benefits from high damage supports because his executes kick in and getting fed turns him into a monster. And he benefits from hard engage because of the followup CC on his W.

Other notes: He's good in pick comps, thanks to W 4th shot lowest health targets or use it to kite All Dragons / Barons are yours, either by ult or 4th shot Traps act as extra wards Traps act as slows vs ganks, engages and in teamfights

Auto attack Jhins are far stronger than R spammers, especially atm with item 3124 , which currently gives amplifying damage greater than it should, because it recursively integrates with his passive.

If you use Ginsoo's near minions, just stack it to 5-6, and then Q grenade a team fight. Watch the other team fall. Q's actually a better killer than auto attacks or R, because it has insane bouncing bonus damage.

Even if that gets fixed, Q will still do about 1300 damage to teams.

Anywho..... in lane..... get a support who can hit pokes. use W after they damage them, when you are close enough to auto attack. It will root them which allows you to get up and use that 4th bullet to harass and win lane. He's pretty hard to lose lane if you do that, especially if you have a Leona who can ensure they soak all the damage while you bully her CC and stack yours on top of it.

Post lane, rely on Q and team peel more than R. Use R when they are running.

This. Rage blade is honestly broken on him right now and I don’t know how it made it through a patch like this. Rush IE and then Rageblade, then a Zeal item (usually RFC or pdancer) and after that you will be unstoppable

KlydeFrog1 votes

Umm because it's still not efficient on him . You still need to stack to use it

Lucky Moniker1 votes

Okay. So you get through one ‘clip’ on minions. You then turn and 2 shot the tank with your 1000 ad

KlydeFrog1 votes

Still not fully stacked why do you think people never ran it on him before ?

i dont really main jhin enough to get serious advice sorry but what i find myself doing is use 4th shot to trade with E i find is good for coverage agianst ganks and waveclearing i sort of use E like an anti siege place 2 in a lane then roam that wave that lane gets depushed and i can be with the team... i use ult either for utility or damage utility being an engage and getting the slow for my team or damage to clean up :o

Alright kids gather around.

Jhin is not a run and gun ADC. He requires patience and time, especially during his ult. A target moving from left to right will be hard to hit if you just fire off all four shots. Wait and predict their movements, but always remember; If they're running in a straight line, they deserve to die. Personally, I use my Q and E for farming, especially late game on huge minion waves. If the enemy bot lane is camping in the bushes, put your traps in there. If they're just in lane, throw your traps back behind the main wave of minions onto the casters. If you don't have vision on a bush/river/any exit from jungle near your turret or behind you, trap it. Traps aren't wards, but they give you a warning when they go off. This fits Jhin's lore perfectly in my opinion, as he uses his traps to keep people from getting backstage. Your Q can get you kills if used properly. If an enemy is very low, I will often flash Q them, especially if they're under turret to avoid autoing the turret on accident. Though, I would not recommend doing this if you're new to the champion. Other than that, your Q can clear 4 low health minions at once, so it's helpful for when you have to reload and don't want to miss farm. His W roots off of any damage he does, as well as allies hitting enemies, and enemies stepping on his traps. Other than that, it's range is amazing. Nothing feels better than sniping that low health enemy that got away under turret and killing them. Just be careful if you want to root someone for a teammate cause you could kill them. Don't want them all mad cause you KSed them. Now, the Curtain Call. You can use it as a form of engage for your team, using it to slow the enemy down so they can go in. Other than that, you can use it to kill the ones that escaped the teamfight(or just you in general). However, I would not recommend ulting if you are by yourself and/or low on health. You're an easy target then.

Now then, onto builds. I personally build item 3031item 3094item 3124item 3046item 3072 in that order. You will also want boots, the kind depending on what you need.

Duo to a recommendation, I run Lethal Tempo on Jhin.

Supports that work well with Jhin, in my experience, are ones with hooks. A BlitzcrankLeonaThresh hook with a Jhin W makes for an easy kill. However, if you're against a Sivir and/or Morgana, this naturally won't work as well. DJ Sona + PROJECT : Jhin = Daft Punk OP, have her go Concussive so you match. Jhin and Janna works well, as I believe her shield gives him a boost in damage. With full build, you could get around 1900-2000+ damage with her shield.

I am far from a good Jhin, only having been playing for a year and having around 480,000 mastery on him. I do, however, wish my protege well.

Make them beautiful. Make them perfect.

Get essence reaver instead of rage blade you do more damage have cdr and more crit

RottedApples2 votes

pay attention to where minions are and how your q will bounce. if you get the right set up you can hit an unsuspecting enemy with a big q that killed all the previous targets, then with the recentish changes you can root the and either trade further or just have that poke.

4th shot isn't for starting fights as others have mentioned but since it always is a crit (and therefore you always get your movespeed on crit) it can be good poke, just be careful you don't take too much trade damage or get picked. Also get a feel for how much it does. There are many times an enemy is just a bit too low health and i've flash q 4th shot for a quick kill.

something sneaky said during the pocket picks video when he talked about jhin about 4th shot. When you go to poke or trade with it, or try to kill a low health target. the common thought is to q then auto because 4th shot has missing health damage and that's how you maximize damage, but the thing is if someone reacts fast you might only get one of the 2 hits and since the 4th shot will do more damage overall it's more important to get that hit first instead of the q, and the q i think might have a slightly higher range anyway so it would be easier to still hit it if someone tries to run.

Jhin is easy to play because he acts more as a mage than a typical ADC. He moves in, autos, backs off momentarily, then autos again, which means you don't need to be a kite god to be successful. That said, he needs a good team to flourish. Teams that think Jhin will hyper carry the teamfight just rush all in and think Jhin will actually deal enough damage like a Sivir would, which is wrong. Team needs to play around Jhin's ability to control the fight with his strong zoning autos and his W CC, along with his R, which means they need to kinda engage, then disengage a bit, to give space and time for Jhin to auto, while denying autoattacks from the enemy carry.

Well, that's not gonna happen in most elo. Also, in laning phase, you are an easy target to tank with your 0 mobility and might find yourself in tough situations. Picking up a hypercarry with a decent laning phase like Sivir or Cait will get you so much further.

A couple of things:

  1. Target selection is SUPER IMPORTANT on a Jhin (other ADCs can deal enough DPS by always shooting the closest thing, not Jhin). It is very important that you think about who you are targeting all the time. If you stand back and DPS the closest thing all the time, you will lose many team fights. He's more burst oriented than DPS so you have to try to shoot at squishes all the time (but stay alive). I suggest you hit Tab every few 10s of minutes and remind yourself who you should be shooting at and who you should not. 4th shot in particular, should always be landed on a carry if possible.

  2. Ult when you have a Numbers Advantage or to finish a fight you are winning. In all other situations, W from a distance and then walk up to shoot at them with your autos (again, you have to TARGET). The Ult is only good for finishing fights and for making picks (when you have Numbers Advantage). In any other situation, you want to get in there and auto for better damage. And same as "1" if you're Ulting, make sure you Target.

  3. Move between all the autos ("kite"), and try to remember that you get "Ghosted" after 4th shot and every time you Crit. Its a big part of his kit for out-playing opponents (to stay as much in motion as possible between shots).

  4. for W, most of the time you just shoot it straight at them; SOMETIMES you lead by a SLIGHT amount but usually a straight shot at them is the most reliable

  5. At 3+ items look for Flash 4th Shot + Q execute opportunities. Sometimes it situationally works for squishy targets with as much as 50% HP.

  6. You might want to chant out loud "1... 2... 3... 4" as you play the champ until you are familiar. It will help you track the shots and remind yourself that you Ghost after your 4th shot. It worked for me.

WiegrafOfValor1 votes

Never goes in, Jhin excels at kiting. Let them come to you, just get you distance and keep orb walking away from them.

Sometimes is better to poke with one or two shots, reload and them go all in with 4 shots. your last shot deals a lot, so make sure you can surprise your enemies and finish them off with your 4th shot. Don't be the Jhin that goes all in on a full hp enemy, them loses the fight because you ran out of shots on the middle of the fight.

For you that are starting, do the following:

2 shots on the carry, walk back, place some traps, reload, 1 - 2 - Toss a trap on their face and the grenade at the same time - 3 - 4.. if they survive and flash away, try to hit your poke to combo into a stun, but even if you miss, start your R and snipe them off.

  1. Jhin is generally very bad if the enemy has several assassins or divers who can get on you and avoid one or more aa's or abilities via their spells and burst you out. Think stuff like jax, nocturne, fizz. If they've got 2 or more of these guys, you aren't going to have a fun time.

  2. Jhin is bad into enemy teams with 2+ tanks or tanky bruisers (like darius) because he takes way too long to kill them unless full build and cannot ignore them to hit squishy backline enemies. Only pick him vs this type of comp if you have a mage mid or someone else who can easily dps down tanks - like cass or maybe ryze; not someone like ahri or syndra or galio.

  3. Use the bonus damage on dancing grenade that it gets when it kills first target hit. spreading out your aa's to get say... 3 minions low and then landing grenade to kill the first gets you extra damage from your grenade and can make farming faster as well as increase your harass damage.

  4. Don't just shoot your deadly flourish at where an enemy is. Shoot it where they WILL be in the next 0.25 sec. If the enemy has good mobility to dodge this, you can still use it to zone them where you want them to go... delaying their escape path or forcing them not to run directly at you if they're engaging.

  5. Your traps do some nice damage, but aren't fast enough to explode and catch an enemy unless you or someone else locks them in place. Layering 2 traps close together though can sometimes allow one to activate in time to deal damage. If nothing else, this works great for clearing a minion wave quickly. It can also be subbed in place of or in addition to a ward to protect from ganks/alert you to ganks.

  6. If the enemy team isn't going to take much damage to start a fight, it's better to do basic attacks and weave in abilities. Hold your ult until the enemy has some low hp targets you can use it on. Don't open a fight by ulting because...

a. it leaves you very vulterable even if you are firing from long range - a simple tp or long ranged ult can leave you dead or out of the fight before you do any damage b. it's less dps vs enemies when they are high health compared to autoing them and weaving in basic abilities; less dps means your team probably dies faster than theirs when you could otherwise have come out ahead or even c. it can further your chase potential if you win the fight and enemies escape at low hp; you might pick up kills or at the least be able to slow enemies for your teammates to catch them and finish them off

  1. Don't needlessly spam abilities and run out of mana. Jhin w/o mana is not very strong.

  2. Don't hesitate to land some good single aa pokes onto enemy carries as you trade farm early in lane; especially landing your 4th shot can be great. If you can also set up grenade to kill enemy caster minions and then jump onto an enemy champ for bonus damage, even better.

As someone who is pretty well versed in the virtuoso, i'd recommend practicing your w's, the root shot. It's super handy in fights and it's great when you see your jungler trying to gank or is under attack. It's a really handy ability but you need to know where your opponent is going. Also make sure to utilize it's range, since it's really handy when trying to catch someone. One last tip on the w is to also try to use it when your support/team cc's them and then root them after, there's a reason why Morgana is one of the best supports to have with him. Happy sniping. Supports: Chain cc. This is because his W can be used to prolong trades and get closer to fights, or help others get closer if you're chasing someone (this is helpful if your support is an initiator). Alistar, Leona, Rakan, Thresh, or some enchanters (Nami, Lulu) come to mind for me, but sometimes it's better to have a tankier partner so that they can last longer, as your attack speed stays at the base amount, you don't get to throw out that many auto attacks (quality over quantity)

Traps: if you're engaging, place them in front of your opponent or below them if you are chasing or someone has them rooted, it's a good slow that will keep them close after the stun/whatever wears off. Place them in choke points too, or in bushes. This helps prevent ganks or help you get away in case of someone chasing you.

Passive: make sure you start reloading before you start a trade. If you start on your third or fourth shot before you can get their health lower, then you'll spend 2 seconds reloading and miss out on an opportunity. Though if you're just trying to poke, then it's almost best to use the fourth shot so that you can use the movement speed boost to get back to safety. Later on you don't need to do that as much as once you get more crit chance you'll get the movement speed boost more often.

Grenade: don't use it too often early on, because having enough mana for your W is more useful for assisting your team than the bouncing grenade. Try to use it to last hit minions, it gains bonus damage if it kills the previous target, and if it killed three minions before bouncing to the enemy, then it's going to deal some good damage.

Items: Rapid fire cannon is almost a must have every game. Though, infinity edge is usually a first buy (haven't played in a while, could've changed), and I think after that the second purchase is Guinsoos Rageblade (because now it increases your AD by a percentage instead of a base amount), and since Jhin gains AD out the wazoo come late game, that's a good thing. Rapid Fire Cannon is third, either attack speed boots or the boots of swiftness, stattik shiv I think, and I usually get Bloodthirster because I like the lifesteal in combination with his heavy hitting auto attacks. Though it could've changed, as Riot did a lot of changes since I stopped playing.

Runes: I... Don't know, to be honest. I usually went fleet footwork because of the movement speed, but I think I was still trying to figure out which runes worked best since pre-season just started. For all I know it could be lethal tempo.

Traps - Jhin's traps like any other trap acts as vision. Place it in common places where the enemy jungler could gank, such as tri-bush or river. My ass has been saved so many times by placing traps in these locations, and many times I've even been able to pick up kills from them. Also, spread them out

Ultimate and Root - Practice, practice, PRACTICE! For a new Jhin main, unless you're familiar with skill-shots, his W and R can be very hard to land. Just keep on practicing with it. --> Ultimate: Like Sneaky once said, don't fire your first shot immediately unless you know you can land it for sure, or they're nearing the edges of your ultimate. When you first pop your ult, especially in lane or team fights, watch where the enemy moves. This allows you to predict where they're going to move to dodge your ultimate. --> Root: In lane, use this to chain CC with your support, especially if you have a Leona. Also, don't underestimate the damage of it - when you get good at landing W's, you can predict and hit low enemies in Fog of War to get a quick kill.

Build - For boots, I usually take the attack speed boots or boots of swiftness First Item - Infinity Edge, unless going AP or Lethality Second Item - Rapid FireCannon or Shiv Third Item - Rapid FireCannon or Shiv depending on what you picked for item 2 Fourth Item - Until they nerf it, Rageblade all the way Fifth Item - Now this tricky. Depending on what team comp they have, you can either get Lord Dom's (if they have tanky champs), Guardian Angel (assassins), Youmuus, or Blood Thirster for that heal

Runes - I usually take: Domination - Dark Harvest, Cheap Shot, Eyeball Collection, and Ravenous Hunter or Relentless Hunter Precision - Triumph and Legend: Alacrity

Dark Harvest is meh early game, but as the game progresses on, it gives Jhin so much extra damage. However, you could also run Fleet Footwork if you'd like

Anyways, good luck on becoming a Jhin Main. Make them B E A U T I F U L

One thing you should know that Jhins abilities will reset the reload timer. So use the skills wisely when you sit on your fourth shot, so when you want to threaten them in lane with it, use your Q and E ( don't use the W it is better to have this up).

Another tipp for the Traps is to have one or more behind you in lane. They give a pretty good slow and a nearly garantead root with your W when they try to chase you through lane and it helps too to slow down the enemy push

For the items My core build is usually Infinity Edge,Rapidfire and Statiks shiv

Rush B.F. sword ( like usual on most adc) The next buy should be done with more tought put into it, against hard pusher like Tristana , Caitlyn and Sivir it can help you more to buy statik shiv before you finish Infinity Edge. When you are ahead or have the upper hand in lane, finish Infinity Edge into Rapid fire

The rest of the items should be bought in a case to case basis for what you or the team needs
