If you were unranked last season you shouldnt automatically be put in silver (not a hate post)
DISCLAIMER: i am not saying this to "attack" unranked people, or suggest they are bad at the game. I am saying this for the following reasons you will read.
________
STOP. PLACING. EVERYONE. WHO. IS. NEW. TO. RANKED. IN. SILVER.
Everyone says that America is a "melting pot", but no, its actually Silver elo.
You got 0/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 1/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 2/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 3/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 4/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 5/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 6/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 7/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 8/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 9/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3! You got 10/10 in your placements? You get Silver 3!
Behold, the melting pot of randomly assorted skills!
REGARDLESS OF THEIR SKILL LEVEL, THEY WILL BE PLACED IN SILVER.
And thats why silver elo is such hell. Nobody is truly "at" silver level.
Someone who is knew to ranked has the skill of a high gold/low platinum? Silver! Someone who is knew to ranked has the skill of a mid-bronze? Silver!
**(START HERE FOR TL;DR)**Which results in silver elo being a complete coin-flip, luck based system where you pray that you get the high gold/low platinum people on your team, and the enemies get the mid-bronzies?
How do you fix this?
You place the player where their skill level appears to be at or close to, by analyzing their statistics and placements.
Example: "Hmm, X had a 75% winrate against silvers, 50% against golds, and 25% winrate against platinums last season. From their placements, they had almost the same results. Let's place them in Gold 3!"
Example: "Hmm, Y had a 40% winrate against silvers, and 30% against anyone higher than silver last season. In their placements, they had a 60% winrate against bronze players. Let's place them in Bronze 2!"
Not: "Hmm, Z is new to ranked, so lets ignore their statistics and put them in Silver 3!"
