Sona deserves more base movement speed

RedCyclone··19 votes·972 views

Immobile support with no cc pre 6 Does not utilize support items what come with movement speed and tanky stats Has a hitbox the size of a 6 stack chogath with wild growth and Iron potion

Why is Sona required to have the most pathetic base stats in the game? what mechanic forces her to NEED to have tiny defenses and movement speed, not to mention the pre rework Sion tier mana pool

Meanwhile lee has like 340+ base ms

It's 350 actually, 2nd-highest tier in the game. - http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Lee_Sin

But honestly though, only some kind of tryhard would keep track of that or waste their time posting a link.

They want her to be "weak" when her enemies get her. We all know how powerful and safe Sona is when you can't fight her. In general , utility champions that have defensive tools from medium to long range tend be squishy , to make up for their safety. Every utility caster dies early if caught , with the very few exceptions of devoted defensive supports( Janna , Lulu ).

Sona is made to look weak at everything , because she has everything a support wants: reliable poke/damage , a heal , a shield that combined with her heal can save people from death, an AoE speed boost that also boosts her speed more, so she can reposition a bit easier , a game-changing engaging AoE stunning ult , and the optional power chord effects that can affect an enemy( reduced damage or powerful slow ).

The only things she misses is a reliable escape , which is one of the reasons why the summoner spell Flash is considered the most important thing in the world for Sona.

She is often called "the Walking Ult" just because , as I mentioned before , flash combined with it is a deadly weapon to use.

"Why should I play her , when X champ is better than her?!!" Well... Your champ may look better than her , but Sona has more cards to play with , and more ways to be useful in comparison to your champ who most probably has less tricks to use.

I agree wit you that Riot should look at her a bit more , but please be patient, she is a delicate champion that can become too powerful with the slightest buff.

She's called "The Walking Ult" because that's all she ever consistently amounts to as a support pick: a walking AoE stun, which other champions do better and with great kit synergy.

She has less base health than a melee minion. She's in the lowest tier for base movement speed. Her only damage tool opens up at 40 base damage and will only ever reach 120-160 damage come the end of laning, coupled with a terrible 20% AP scaling. You call that reliable poke? Literally any other support can outdamage that at a more frequent basis.

Her heal is one of the worst in the game. Any support with a heal can simply outsustain her with it, and the shield's relevance is mostly determined by situations. Aside from this, the high and scaling mana cost discourages her from even wanting to use it to begin with. If you wanted her for healing, you're probably making one of the worst decisions thus far.

Her movement speed aura is pathetic. Nerfing the aura zone to 350 means Sona can only give you the movement speed by dragging herself into you. And it's, AT BEST, a 20-22% movement speed buff that lasts for 1.5 seconds on allies. For a frame of reference, Nami's passive will give allies a FLAT 60 ms for 1.5 seconds with a 20% AP scaling, already outdoing Sona's Celerity, or Karma, who grants a 40-60% ms buff for the same 1.5 seconds while ALSO granting a scaling shield, which can then be mantra'd to be AoE.

If you're picking her for her AoE stun, you could just pick Alistar, who does it while also being tanky and with greater frequency. Or pick Leona, who just combos her CC up after her ultimate. Or Nami, whose ult is instead a large knock-up coupled with a large slow, with a longer range and wider hitbox. Or Annie, because Annie.

Sona's not good at anything. She never has been. Sona has more cards to play with, but every other support around her has better cards, and no one has time, room, or patience for a generalist champion that can even be mildly decent at being generic.

Her rework was supposed to fix this, but we all know how Riot likes to not fix much when they need to.

Yes , she is squishy as hell , don't make me talk about Anivia or Zyra xD

Now her Q: Hymn of Valor RANGE: 850 COST: 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 mana COOLDOWN: 8

Active: Sona sends out two bolts of sound that deal magic damage to the nearest enemies, prioritizing champions.

Magic Damage: 40 / 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 (+ 50% AP) Aura: Sona and tagged allied champions deal bonus magic damage on their next basic attack within 3 seconds.

Bonus Magic Damage: 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 (+ 20% AP) (+ 10 / 20 / 40)

I call this reliable because:

  1. It is point and click.
  2. The total damage Sona does to one target with her Q is actually 60/110/160/210/260(+ 70% AP)(+ 10/20/40) when trading. I don't count her allied ADC , because he/she isn't always reliable.
  3. Her ult is pretty fast and fat ( how could Riot say that Varus' ult is fat xD). Pretty reliable , only Flash and summoner spell Cleanse/Cleanse items counter it.
  4. There is the occasional power chord .That isn't a joke, especially when you use the Hymn of Valor for the 40% increase of damage too.
  5. She has the option to deal less damage , but at 850 range. (So not too many champs can touch her).

Aria of Perseverance RANGE: 1000 COST: 80 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 100 mana COOLDOWN: 10

Active: Sona heals herself and the most wounded nearby allied champion, increased by 0.5% for every 1% of target's missing health.

「 Minimum Heal: 30 / 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 (+ 20% AP) 」 「 Maximum Heal: 45 / 75 / 105 / 135 / 165 (+ 30% AP) 」 Aura: Sona and tagged allied champions receive a shield lasting up to 1.5 seconds.

Shield Strength: 35 / 55 / 75 / 95 / 115 (+ 20% AP) (+ 10 / 20 / 40)

Yes , her heal is worth in terms of mana only when you go all-in and use the shield too. But... She can actually use it... For the heal. Mikael's Crucible has always been a powerful item for utility supports, and our maven uses it a lot to save her allies with just 2 clicks ( the active and the heal+shield). Her core supportive items are the coin and the spellthief , which combined with a Chalice item , she will solve a bit of her early mana problems and completely solve them in the mid-late game. Also Zeke's tends to be a popular choice that increases your mana pool.

"Her heal is the worst"- true , but I don't remember to see any healer to have the engage potential Sona has , nor the reliability that they will land all their skills.

Nami is the closest with her bubble , but again , I rarely see a Nami hitting more than two people at the same time. I'm disliking her ult because it knocks them up for a short duration , and the slow will not stop your opponents from counter-engaging you/your team( so it is not safe in every situation ).

Soraka has her health issues , Taric has the slow , slow , slow projectile speed of his stun(and worse mana problems too) , while Nidalee lacks CC.

I give you the point for her E , but never underestimate an AoE buff of movement speed. If Sona ever get a high AP build , her E isn't a joke as you make it look.

As a side note , when Karma uses her mantra'd E at the start of the fight , she will have a more difficult time getting the second one because of her passive. Still a powerful option in the right situation.

And no offense , but most of the powerful engagers that I have seen are tanks(most of them being melee , only Thresh is ranged) , which most of the times they lack the heal potential Sona has in the mid-late game and the inbuilt AoE movement speed buffs( this part is covered by items , but Sona can also get her Talisman of Ascension easly )

Another two non-tank engagers are Annie and Morgana. Annie is just pure damage , low utility without major items , while Morgana has her unique form of utility in a powerful snare and spell shield , but no heal , movement speed buff ... Just 2 different champions.

Why do I want to pick her? I want to pick her because:

  1. She has a good amount of poke.
  2. I have the potential to heal my allies to full health once I get mana regen items.
  3. I can help my allies fight or run from the enemy.
  4. I can make my enemies dance while my allies kill them.
  5. I have an unique mechanic that encourages me and my allies to cooperate and use it at its Max potential for great results.

Also , Sona in the seasons 2-3 ( or any per-rework Sona video) was one of the most played supports in the world. When I was asking people what a support represents for them , most of the times they mentioned Sona and Soraka as the best examples of a true support.

PS: Sona's rework wasn't supposed to fix her issues , it was supposed to get rid of her permanent auras ( they said there should not be invisible power in this game) and to make her kit more dynamic , by making the new kind of auras have a significant impact when used properly , but limited by time and range.

I guess it's time to clear up misconceptions yet again.

Firstly, Hymn of Valor's range is 700. The tooltip is wrong on both the League site AND the Wikia. Hell, the 2 don't even match each other, let alone its actual range.

Aria's mana cost is NEVER worthwhile. In comparison to pre-4.13, the per-cast value is less than 5% of what it used to be. Don't give me no "2-man heal" or "5-man shield" BS. Even if such fabrications were logically possible, the skill STILL would not break a 20% value. It's complete trash, the worst spell on her kit, if not one of the worst in the entire game.

If you think Sona is anything other than a shitty paste&cut copy of Nami, you're just intentionally misleading yourself. Sona was slightly subpar to Nami before patch 4.13 and now that she's received the 24+ nerfs there and the additional 8+ since, she's nothing more than the town jester.

Her base stats should be looked at in general.

But yeah MS would be nice to have again.

Pika3103 votes

Meanwhile Nami has Sona's E on all 4 spells, a stun and is still a higher base MS. Oh and her passive just got recently buffed on ult.

What do they give Sona for having inferior mobility to Nami? They remove her MS aura, nerf Celerity's cooldown and nerf her base MS. The stench of bias coming from Rito's "balance" department can be smelled from the opposite coast.

Because dank memes yo.

Better nerf Sona.

As someone who hates making shit skillshots, I feel like the only way to get people to stop complaining about her Q is to make it a skillshot.

Honestly, I think it'd make her a bit easier to balance too...

But whatever, I stopped playing her after rework because I stopped enjoying her tbh.

EDIT: I started ranting about her Q for some reason, anyways, her E is suppose to cover her weakness of low movement speed, but honestly, it's just...ugh. Her Q and W are so bloated that her E is stuck being shiity.

Pika3102 votes

Actually, Celerity is Sona's "strongest" spell, number-wise. It mathematically has the greatest return per-cast and the best scaling of all three.

That should tell you how shitty a champion she is when THAT is truthfully her least-worst spell...

RedCyclone1 votes

wow, would love to see the math on that I have always been pissed at her E since her rework because its 1% MOVESPEED PER RANK!

Pika3101 votes

I'm sorry, I tried really hard to find it going all the way back to my very first post on the Boards. I may have missed it as I was skimming over them, or I might have posted the math on the old forums. I doubt the latter, but I can't out-rule it. I know it's out there somewhere though.

I can try to summarize the results for you from what I remember:

  • Hymn's effectiveness per-cast is over 70% less than pre-4.13 and requires over 1250 AP to break even.
  • Aria is somewhere around 97% or more less effective than before, but had a varied AP break point that averaged somewhere around 750 AP give or take 150.
  • Celerity is somewhere over 33% less and only requires about 350 AP.

On the other hand, here's some good stuff I did run into:
