How's the new Tristana?

Gameplay notes by Vesh from http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/champions-skins/champion-update/champion-update-tristana

Old Trist was a late game powerhouse who didn’t really have clearly defined weaknesses. Her power dipped in the mid game, yeah, but when you look at other super powerful late game carries (think Vayne or Kog’Maw), she just didn’t have the same Achilles heel-type glowing red spots for her enemy team to pew pew at. She had insane range and speed with her basic attacks, and even when she did get caught, she had a decent knock back AND a lengthy jump that let her GTFO. Changes were needed, and after deliberating with the rest of the champion update designers, we decided to cement Tristana as a daredevil reset carry who gets bonuses from (rocket) jumping into fights while removing some of the safe strength she had in her kit.

Now, instead of operating as an uber safe right-clicker, new Tristana’s power is windowed, with huge power spikes when she’s played to meet specific goals. Her basic attack speed still increases per level, but the boost is lower than before. This makes Rapid Fire actually important, as she’s not just switching from stupid fast attack speed to soul-crushingly fast attack speed. Her Rocket Jump now deals lower base damage, but can deal way more if she stacks up Explosive Charge on her target before landing on their face.

So, how do you like Riot's new direction for Tristana? Do you think they achieved what they set out to do?

Personally I feel that the attack speed reduction was a bit severe. I think it would be better if her base attack speed was increased and the steroid on Q lowered instead. Furthermore, the range decrease came out of nowhere and I really don't think she deserved it. If her new E gave her too much of a good early game, then perhaps gate her passive so that she won't have too good of an early and mid game, but leave her late game alone?

I also tried building her AP, and it seems that an attack speed / on-hit variant is more effective now. Building Nashor's Tooth and Wit's End gives her the attack speed she needed to complete her combo faster. Hextech Gunblade seems like it'll be good on her too.

What are are her new best items? Statikk Shiv for the burst, especially since she got a reset dash or Phantom Dancer to make up for her lower attack speed? Is AP Tristana still viable? How do you build her?

It's ok.

Tristana is one of my favorite ADCs in the entire game (had something like 200 games on her last season. And i only played maybe 500 or 600 ranked games).

The E change is really nice, although the animation feels clunky as hell in comparison to how tight the rest of her kit feels.

That said, the attack speed scaling and range nerf is unacceptable. I love playing Trist, but there is no chance in hell i am going to waste my time playing her instead of Jinx.

old Trist had 2 things going for her. The longest permanent range in the game, and a really nice steroid on her Q.

Now she still has the longest permanent range in the game, but it is meaningless. 669 range at level 18. 19 more than Caitlyn at level 1. To put that in perspective, even a person under the effects of Exhaust can more 100 units per second. Making that range pointless.

And her Q steroid was nerfed multiple times beofre her VU. And now her scaling has been nerfed even more.

So, im probably saying goodbye to Trist for the time being.

Not to poke fun at you.. but ONLY 500-600? I only played 100 last season lol.

500-600 isnt that many ranked games over the course of an entire season if you only play ranked (only played Draft if i was queuing with 2 or more friends).

There are people who already have 100 games played THIS season.

I see you're playing her full AD. Were you able to contribute to fights when your Q / E are down?

Btw what were you going to build your last BFS into?

I didnt find my damage lacking late game. It was still very good. Just without the range i dont see a reason to pick her over someone else.

Also, i dont have a BF left open in the 2 games in my Match History, so what do you mean?

I was actually replying to REKT522. Are you using Chronological View?

I am.

I find it more enjoyable way to navigate the forum. But i suppose that is my mistake, i never realized that before.

Yeah, I was using it too, until I realized I just couldn't follow discussions like that. I wish when switching to Chronological it would auto quote the person being replied to.

Ah yeah, I felt this too. The animation doesn't feel smooth, I hope this gets fixed in the future, unless it's intentional to give her counterplay.

Sad to hear :(

I'll try her a bit more, but yeah, the range and attack speed nerf was a bit overboard. I'd rather lower the power on her E, but it doesn't seem like Riot wants to go that direction.

Rubbery Skrub1 votes

Yeah, there isn't really a good reason to choose her over Jinx or Caitlyn now. Jinx beats her in rocket form now I believe.

I honestly prefer this over the old trist, her explosive charge is what you should center yourself around because it gives you the biggest output of damage, you can look at my last match for yourself. http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1712900584/209246680?tab=overview

At rank 5, E is up something like every 7-8 seconds, so there is not really any point in time where a fight comes up and she doesn't have it. I too am upset especially about the range nerfs to tristana, but the damage on her e is now greatly increased if you are stacking it. Basically, I did the math, and late game it has the same or better damage BEFORE you stack the e, at least for ad tristana. Plus, the fact that it is now aoe and also can be used on towers is insane. In fact I feel like the reason they nerfed her attack speed again is because they HAD TO due to the insane damage of her combos now. To put it in perspective, I found myself against a Vi (normally a classic adc-killer) and beating her in mid game fights. The real thing about the change is that it's a huge nerf to AP Tristana, since DFG is gone and her scales were all reduced, but for AD Tristana I would like to think of this as a buff or at least a net-neutral change. (Her new e is so overpowered)

I was able to contribute well, the e and q were just extra damage to my already high damage, also i was gonna build a mercurial because of the cc on their team and for some magic resist.

she has a zed ult on a 10 second cooldown

Its terrible. Sure E does decent damage but at what costs? Def not worth losing 1) Range 2) Shit load of attack speed 3) Starting Health 4) Starting armor and 5) All valuable AP ratios.

Shes basically gutted and sucks now.

Love the rework, hate all the nerfs that came with it. I don't get the base health and armor nerfs. The AS nerf hurts pretty bad. The range nerf also came out of nowhere. I can kind of get if they want to even out her powercurve, so she isn't as helpless mid game and isn't as much of a terror late game, but honestly with the AS nerfs, her mid game definitely drags.

I'm in kind of a unique space where I played a fair bit (comparatively; 2nd most played champion, 68% win rate) of Tristana last season (she was my first main when I picked up the game, but I've recently rediscovered why I love her), but when I played her I didn't have proper runes (namely AS Quints), so the first round of AS nerfs really hurt. I got my rune page in order so now her early game feels wonderful, but I know that's just because of the runes; for me they even out at around lvl 6 (her old 4% AS/lvl without AS Quints, and her new 1.5% AS/lvl with 15% AS from runes). After this point, even after investing a lot of my build into attack speed, she still felt noticeably sluggish.

Not sure if it's just something I have to get used to or Riot actually undershot the rework with all the nerfs, maybe hopefully she gets a small buff in the future (I'm assuming they're still tuning), but not enough so that she goes back to that ~100% ban rate she had :P. I really like the new E active though, and the VU and VO work is one of my favorites at least. I definitely will play more Tristana, just not sure if I'll bring her into Ranked quite yet.

I've played a few games with her but I simply don't know how to feel just yet. I know she can split push harder now but it still feels off. played a few hundred with old trist so there will be transition time.

what's vayne's achilles heel? she's hyper mobile with low cooldown dashes, her damage is always relevant, she has a knockback (plus conditional stun) on a lower cooldown than tristana's, her range is average. she seems safer at all stages of the game and having a big advantage compared to tristana when behind because %hp true damage is always relevant. don't tell me it's pink wards...

Ariaflux1 votes

I'm guessing it's range. Yeah 550 range is average, but she also doesn't have any skill to poke / extend her range without putting herself in danger and her knockback is single target. It's a lot better than many other ADCs but as a hypercarry I guess it's somewhat of a drawback.

"well this one attribute isn't above average" doesn't sound like the same thing as an achilles heel

Vayne has zero AoE and her siege potential is bad compared to other marksmen since her AD steroid doesn't effect towers and neither does her AS niche

Ariaflux1 votes

So has anyone tried any AP builds? Rushing a Nashor's and then Gunblade? It's not going to be the same as old AP Tristana but there might be a way.

Rubbery Skrub1 votes

I haven't tried Nashor's or an actual AP build, but I did try adding a Gunblade to an AD build, and that seemed to be pretty effective just to give her a bit more magic damage.

Rather than running a Crit build on her with IE and PD, try doing for an AD, Attack Speed, and CDR build!

Berserker Greaves Blood Thirster Hurricane Last Whisper You can get 40% CDR with scaling blues+quints and Essence Reaver Buy what ever you want as the 6th item.

This build focuses on her AoE nature. With Hurricane she can use the passive component of her E to erase entire waves. When you reach a Tower toss your E at it then charge it up and spam the laugh button as it hits everyone in range for 500 damage.

I tried her, she is okay at the moment. I thought that she was fine, but I am going to wait till they buff her. Her attack speed is my biggest problem with the rework, kinda like what they did with Sion's passive life gain. I like that she has become sort of THE siege adc. Push them under tower, lay your e on the tower, hit all the people hiding under it like the wimps they are muahahahaha kinda feel. Cannot wait till her kit is there, cause let the good times roll after that. XD

I absolutely love the new tristana! Check out my match history, rekt! Anyways, she needs buffs to actually play her late game because she just puts herself in harms way which is not a good position for an adc to be in. The only thing she needs is her ranged passive to come back, she no longer is a hyper carry but i believe the new Tristana was very successful.

Strident1 votes

Building Zerker's, BoRK, and PD will easily allow Rapid Fire to boost Tristana to 2.5 Attack Speed. Her E damage is quite insane, her tower killing potential as well, and her R is still very effective at disengage and execute. The range reduction can be felt, but overall is not crippling in any way.

New animations also make her smoother to play.

Fitz n The Fool1 votes

yeah her win rate really backs up how strong she is. 46% and 2nd lowest of any ADC after Twitch. Yeah, great rework.

Fitz n The Fool1 votes

Of all champions above a 15% popularity, only Lee Sin has a lower win % than Trist.
