Dota vs LoL Pick/Win Rates Comparison

After this post I was curious how the rates really compare so I made a simple chart. The results were surprising (to me at least) so I'll share it.

Pick Rate Comparison: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d-IladX2L8O1cFG0wH7Fi2XAln79U0uJF0u23uF5wgY/pubchart?oid=2026772858&format=interactive

Win Rate Comparison: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d-IladX2L8O1cFG0wH7Fi2XAln79U0uJF0u23uF5wgY/pubchart?oid=482264449&format=interactive

Stats taken from http://www.lolking.net/champions/ and http://www.dotabuff.com/heroes/played?date=week as mentioned in the original post. Both are using weekly stats.

Results: Pick rate seems about the same for both games, Dota has a slight edge as low pick rate heroes are still picked more than low pick rate champions. Win rate is actually very much in LoL's favor. Disregard the sharp drop off at the end, it's Bard lol.

EDIT: Oops, seems like the win rate one should be discarded because apparently they don't add up to the same number as play rate does. I guess it's because it's a mixture of draft of blind etc.

Even if lol edges out in win rate, the top champ win rates are in favor of DOTA which seems to me as if they have a steep drop off from the ops to the weak heroes

Win rate has nothing to do with balance. There are far too many variables related to balance. Simply boiling down the complexity of balance into just a win rate just doesn't do it justice.

In dota you have to also think that many of the heroes can lane in multiple lanes and fill out multiple roles and have various team setups. Where as LoL's champs tend to lane the same way, face off the same opponents and have similar comps.

I don't think either game is better or worse at balancing their game

Nice plot, there's a lot to glean from that.

Would be more interesting imo if you compared current LoL stats to prior LoL stats. Like maybe a now, 6 months ago, 1 year ago, 2 years ago thing.

tbh I don't really know anything about DoTA so this doesn't mean much to me.

What kind of shitty stats are these? You need to do an ANOVA to determine if there are statistical differences in win rate between dota and lol.

I'm not gonna pretend i have an answer. I'm just pointing out that win rate and pick rate in pub matches is not a good indication of balance. I guess comparing pro tournament numbers would be most accurate since everyone is hyper motivated to win. i believe dota uses pro scene to do most of its balance changes.

LoL takes teh approach of balancing overall win rate, but there is a danger or catering to the majority of the community (who are pretty bad at this game). When something is perceived as OP, u get countless threads of complaining till the champ gets some nerf. Dota, u get called a scrub and told to play better and gank, unless the hero is truly op will it receive a minor nerf.

I do feel anecdotally that dota is the harder game to balance (with unique kits, lanes, strats, metas, etc) and the fact that they have a exciting pro scene makes it a well balanced game.
