Kassadin is literally only oppressive because of his Q

Just nerf his fucking Q ratio down to like .3 and give him back his ult range and he'll not be oppressive.

Ult range felt good to use, and as a Kassadin main, I'd play him if he did zero damage with his spells, but this ult range is just stupid and terrible to play with.

You could pick Lux against him if his constant burst rotations were lower.

I applaud your persistence, but I doubt you actually believe your title (out of respect that you know what Kassadin can do & how he does it).

Like I said earlier, Viktor's Q is similar, yet no one's complaining about Viktor.

That's because 3/4 of Viktor's stuff is skillshots and it's a bit easier to miss.

Also he's not mobile.

His shield also doesn't come instantly.

The Q is a problem that makes his ult a problem. Nerf the Q and his ult won't be nearly as stupid.

And I think this is why everyone would say Kass's problem is exactly what it looks like: his R.

His numbers are too powerful for what his ult is.

He wins lane too easily because of his Q.

If Riot nerfs his Q, he will not feel as stupid to lane against as mage. The only mages that I reliably don't faceroll in lane (minus jungler intervention) are Viktor and Ori. Everything else is too easy pre-six and post-six for Kassadin. His pre-six is only weak against mages.

Well, I think Riot's assassin design of "pre-6 weakness" followed by getting the win button at 6 has always been bull (or at least as long as potions have had to be capped at 5). Pre-6 weakness is a farce from the get-go, and while any nerf to Kass would make him weaker, nerfing his Q would just feed more into that farce.

At the end of the day, Kass's ult is what lets him turn 1v1s into 2v1s, lets him escape ganks, lets him dodge skillshots - all things that are valuable independent of how much damage his Q contributes (and things that will still be true even with the 450 range). I guess there's probably an appropriate price he can pay for it, but I doubt Riot would ever make him actually pay that price, and I expect that players would cry bloody murder at how painful it would make his laning or 1v1s feel.

Lastly, there's also the problem of Riot's flat damage itemization in the game that allows champs to build around nerfed ratios (sheen being the obvious choice for Kassadin, but hurricane on Kayle being another notable example).

Why can't he have a strength in his ult if his damage is lower?

There's still shit like LeBlanc who also does it with a snare.

She also has higher damage

Well, I think this "but X champion does it" type of argument sorta misses the point. What if neither champion is healthy for the game? What if they're both keeping champions out of play just by virtue of that mechanic?

But, for their differences: LB's cooldown is higher, and LB's chain can miss.

Again, I don't think I should need to defend every other champion's balance when I say Kassadin's wasn't perfect. I think we'd all agree that Riot has more than enough balance issues to fix.

They're both unhealthy for the game.

Nerfing Kassadin's ult makes him feel terrible to play while also not fixing him feeling terrible to play against in quite a few situations. In the end, he's still going to have situations where he can insta-blink and one-shot you. A lot of this could be averted if they just hit his burst. The LCS wouldn't play him as much if he didn't deal so well with mages like Liss.

Exactly. Ignoring the shield, there are a ton of other skills that hit a metric fuckton harder like Annie Q, Diana Q, Morgana Q among others. The mobility Kass HAD gave him the ability to land this skill easier than the other skills I listed.
