I dunno. People don't really play around the mechanic that well, and there aren't even any angry PSAs about doing it right or callouts on Pro players that screw up the awakening. Just talking about going on the offense on a slept target here. The more places you add this mechanic, the more that'll stand out.
Makes me think either none of you played MMO's, or all of you were the jackass that targeted and/or AoE'd the Mezzed/Sleeped/Polymorphed target. I played CC a lot in MMOs... sometimes I still wake up in a cold sweat, thinking my Mezzes have been broken...
In Zoe's case, making sure to let the slow combo'd Q catch up to a target that won't be blocked for, and awakening it with a strong nuke or preferably a CC ability to take advantage of the full true damage echo, or perfect CC chaining. Or with no CC, making sure to sync to the timing of the slow followup Q for your own burst on that target so that they have minimal time to avoid anything.
I.E., don't jump on the slept target as a 10% health Rengar, free the slept target, killing yourself and saving them from Zoe's burst.
Don't walk up and max range auto the slept target as a Nami, screaming "Be FREE" as they get away.
Don't rush to try to be the one to burst the slept target you can't actually solo kill if you know that Zoe can followup, or you have someone with proper CC that won't be blocked in the meantime. It's like dealing with a stasis or a revive, be aware of the time you have to play with and reposition.
In more chaotic situations/teamfights, or sieges where the enemy has control over blocking, it makes more sense to take what you can get, but in pure catch-outs not playing it correctly is kinda meh.
