Why people often have an higher rank on their smurfs than their main accounts?

Days ago on Reddit someone said he had a smurf that was diamond 3, but he was actually struggling to get out of platinum on his main account.

I used to think that having a smurf with higher elo than your own main account was simply too absurd to happen. However, not only this can happen, but is actually common, more so than I think.

I posted this on Reddit some time ago, now I want your opinion about this subject.

It might help to think about it almost like grades in school. If you've got 10 homework assignments, doing poorly on the first 2 or 3 but getting 100% on 6 or 7, your overall grade is still weighed down. If you could drop the first 2 or 3 scores, your overall grade would be higher.

Creating a smurf is like being able to drop the first 2 or 3 scores. This is because your MMR doesn't completely reset in between seasons, some portion of it gets used to influence where you start out the next season. That hold over is why you'll see Bronze 3 players complaining that they won 10/10 placements and got placed Bronze 5, while Plat+ players who win 10/10 don't get placed in Bronze 5.

So while you may be a better player today than you were 3 years ago on some level that 3 year old MMR is still dragging you down. Conversely, the smurf you started a year ago doesn't have the baggage of the 3 year old MMR nor the 2 year old MMR, so if you've actually improved as a player it should be higher.

My Smurfs Ranked MMR and Normal MMR are both higher then my mains. My smurf is almost Plat with way less games lol. In Normals it's not uncommon for me to play vs and with only plats and diamonds.

Yup I was gonna say this. But very well explained.

Uh whoever said that was lying.

Anyone that can get to d3 can easily get into d5 rather quickly at the very least.

Its just that plat 1 range has a lot of boosted animals into it and you might get a couple bad streaks there with a lot of unwinnable games, the guy probably only played a handful games there if anything.

well one could say on your "main" you try really hard and take it seriously and might not play as freely therefore would take less risk and then end up losing cuz you didnt go for that 50/50 play that if you made it your team wins and you could of jacked your mmr early on the main account and its hard to recover from that..

on the "smurf' you are playing vs worst players for a good while so your mmr sky rockets and makes you climb easier and you arent as serious on it and play more aggressively in those 50/50 plays and end up coming out ahead on that and winning more cuz of it

just a thought

On my main account im more prone to trolling/picking random shit I dont play because I have so many options. However , on a smurf with only a designated few champions that I selected solely for climbing with few rune pages, I am much more climbing oriented. I feel as if the more champions I have, the more I am prone to playing lee sin, elise and other champs I'm not particularly good at.

Its because you are more relaxed. you give less fucks and you play better. In CSGO i made it to MG2 with my main which I sweated really hard on. I had a "smurf that Reached MG1 with just the deagle. Its all about mindset. On the smurf I didnt give 2 fucks and it made play better. I won about 70% of games on my main and on my smurf I think I lost 1 game out of like 30.

Only reason i can think of is that normally i get all of my "rust" off on my main account beginning of the season and then im already warmed up for my smurf? idk

You give up on an account and switch. I went on massive lose streaks on this account to the point where I was under 50%. In plat. I switched to my second,Live2letdie2, and am d4 with 59%. It's just easier to climb on a new account when you destroy your mmr. This account has decayed to gold and I still don't know if I'll play on it again.

The thing is, it is very hard to give up on an account when you have already purchased so many skins and icons there and you have rewards you will never get on your smurf for obvious reasons.

EDIT: Also, there is the fact that you already have added so many people there, although you can just add them again in your smurf. They may not recognize you, though, or their friend list is full. You have to explain them the situation in such cases.

I don't think this occurs that often, you don't hear about all the guys with smurfs that are lower than their main's elo

When you play on your smurf you play more relaxed, Don't care about people flaming. Because it is just your smurf. (i never flame but on my main my mood sinks when my team flames, on my smurf i just try to carry harder when people flame)

i play more games on my smurfs (yes i made 3 smurfs) than i do on my main so my rank goes up faster then my main

i have all champions on my main and i dont main 1-2 champions. i tend to get lost in what to pick. on smurfs that answer is a lot easier for me. my main is just the hub to play with friends and all summoner icon rewards/skin stuff. test new things in normals. kind of account smurfs are for ranked climbing.

i also had ranked anxiety for like 7 years. untill i started to play on smurfs. i went on massive 26 game winning streak from silver 1 to plat V. skipping g2 and g4 on all my ranked accounts (i just want to see what my real skill level is without any stress of losing on my main)
