Magic resist

So this might be a noob question and all, but why does every champ start with magic resist? The whole armor/ad makes sense to me, but no champ starts with or gets ap/lvl, so why does every champ start with magic resist?

Because champions deal magic damage from their abilities...?

Yea, but no champions start with AP. I guess that is a good point, though.

Completely different dynamic.

AP champions have base damages on their spells that increase in damage with additional AP. Many AD champions scale with bonus AD (although some do scale with total ad) One could say that AP is to mages as bonus AD is to ad casters/assassins.

In addition, you have to take Penetration into consideration: If no champions had base magic resistance, literally every mage in the game would become instantly OP overnight due to being able to deal MASSIVE amounts of bonus damage AND have it be unmitigated.

The same way Armor prevents early game auto attacks and physical damage spells from obliterating everything (not to mention junglers, oh jesus) Magic Resist prevents mages from utterly curbstomping everything in sight.

Every champion starts with a spell that (usually) deals magic damage. So just like starting armor (and the subsequent scaling) gives you some basic protection against AAs, base MR gives you basic protection against early spells.

Probably because it's easier than coding bonus damage vs minions&monsters into every magic-damage-dealing ability.

Because not all magic damage scales with AP?
