Season 6 over 77% of ranked players were bronze / sliver so.. why isnt everyone climbing now??

The typical and most genetic response towards gut champ threads, elo hell threads and overall ranked satisfaction threads is :

"You need to improve."

-- Neck beards of league 2010 - present time.

This way of thinking seems to have bypass any coordinating brain function towards overall statistics in ranked period. If that phrase actually was backed by statistics then i would have nothing to say and i would shut the fuck up right now. But ladies and gentleman no its the polar opposite ! If people actually were improving.. wait let me rephrase that .. if people are actually climbing ! yes why then aren't we seeing a total shift in % in leagues ?? why hasn't 77% become 60% or 55%? People are always improving even when losing through overall experience in matches. So if improving is a guarantee factor why isn't the majority climbing ??

There has to be at least one person out there who has received the famous improve quote to climb and that individual has done everything to improve. Perhaps even watching replays, taking notes, practicing mechanically, perfecting decision making, professional coaching and YET i guarantee you that player is stuck somewhere in some elo wondering whats wrong with this game.

Oh and for you guys who like facts and numbers this is was season 3 to be exact:

Bronze

Total players: 505,328 (45-99%) 55%

Silver

Total players: 330,500 (10-44%) 34%

Gold

Total players: 65,300 (2-9%) 7%

Diamond

of Players Total players: 4,680 (.01-.46%) .45%

Total Ranked Players at the recorded time in S3: 918,778 (NA sever)

Now 55 + 34 = 89% of 918,778 (recorded in time not actual end of season number.) also NA sever alone.

Live % http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/rankings/rank-distribution

**78.91% global ranked player base is sitting in sliver / bronze (Live) ** 78.82% (NA alone live) Also we have much more players now than season 3 keep that in mind ;)

You see that's already more than last season.. the numbers don't lie my friends but based from what i saw in season 3 , season 6 , and live global statistics you are seeing the same majority being over 3 quarters all in low elo so we have a pattern here. A very toxic one indeed.. how can people possibly be climbing if the numbers haven't changed to lower than 3 quarters?? If people were actually climbing "performing better" that overall percentage would decrease by A LOT assuming you have millions of people training and coming back better than the previous season. In actuality we should be having a larger overall gold player base. But then people have the audacity to tell others to improve their gameplay??? I believe its time to start raising some eyebrows.

https://s28.postimg.org/s9yaig2zx/original.jpg I also take back my recent judgemental statement in my previous threads towards the overall game so this is directly towards ranked alone.

This is stupid. The ladder is relative. It's relative to the players in it. As the overall skill level of the community grows, the ladder becomes more difficult. If you had a time machine and grabbed a silver player from season 3 and plopped him into season 7 they would be bronze. Sorry, but your excuses arent cutting it. The season 7 ladder is not comparative to season 3 ranked data.

Right now Gold is the top 20% of players. To be gold, you have to be in the top 20% of CURRENT players. Thats how a ranked ladder funtions

Relative is a interesting word.. How about repetitive? like the numbers that show the same amount of people in each bracket despite everyone getting better?

Jorencice1 votes

But... thats exactly how ladders work?

Are you expecting 80% of the player base to be in diamond?

I mean this is basic shit your not grasping.

Who in what teemos are you smoking ?

80% player base in diamond ?

I think a 5 year old could grasp the concept of peeling an apple.

this is the NA sever from heroes of the storm a very similar ranked ladder system :

1036 master players

6550 diamond players

10585 platinum players

10412 gold players

10860 silver players

16072 bronze players

Holy howitzers batman we have a balanced ladder !

The overall population is around 50% between sliver / bronze VS league of legends 77% .

Yeah let's use HotS as an example because that game obviously isn't terrible

that ladder distribution is not the distribution league is looking to achieve. 75% of the player base being in bronze/silver is the distribution they are looking for and is what it has been for the entirety of my league experience. This isn't new and having relatively equal number of players in divisions doesn't make a ladder "balanced"... the ladder is "balanced" based upon what percentage you want people to be in each division. The distribution could very easily be adjusted and it shouldn't be.

I would argue that adding a league on the lower end of the ladder to increase distribution of the large number of the players could help but at the end of the day all that is doing is making people in the lower tiers feel better/worse about themselves depending where they fall even though their actual rank on the ladder is still the same.

One thing that you fail to account for is that the skill level in each tier has increased quite significantly. The percentages for the different tiers is mathematically fixed by definition so what is being compared is RELATIVE not ABSOLUTE skill differences.

Back in season one I was ranked platinum (which was roughly equivalent to diamond before they added the extra tiers and adjusted the ratios) and I've actually gotten better since then but my ranking falls a little every season (down to gold 1 last season) because the average skill level is increasing enormously. Go back and watch some early 'profesional' games from S1 and wince in pain at their lack of basic skills. People didn't know wave management, rotations, or even proper build order.

Where did i say absolute ? anywhere? The numbers don't lie if you disagree with me, you disagree with league of graphs. With over 75% of the population remaining spread out only through 2 leagues while there are gold, plat, diamond , masters , challengers. Your saying nope im wrong and millions of people should be in the lower bracket despite there being 5 other brackets where not even 30% is populating them. Your saying the matching making system is perfectly fine and sliver and bronze players should just continue to never climb each season despite improving themselves. Previous skill in previous seasons are inconclusive to actual numbers we can sit all day and talk about how players did this and that the bottom line is the numbers never changed much and its a pattern. Current season snowball meta doesn't infulence much overall because its always 50 / 50 either one or the other , its not a variable directly leading towards a sizable victory over and over it just leads to more unsatisfying matches.

This is easy to account for. Relative skill. The entire population from Bronze to Challenger are all improving. So while their skill might be improving, their skill relative to each other remains the same.

I was G5 70some LP last season, OP.GG said I was in the top 25%. So thats only 75% lower then gold lol.

Because that isn't how an ELO system works? By design a given % of people will be in a given rank because for one person to climb another has to lose. There are ways of adjusting this, like moving the new player starting point up or down, increasing gains and decreasing losses(or the opposite), the way they implemented a free gimmie win on repeated attempts at promos etc. But, at the end of the day, ELO is still similar to a ladder system in that you can only go up by knocking someone else down.

Unless they completely overhaul the system, the worst % of players will always be bronze, next silver, next gold, etc, even while the overall player base is improving. Take a player who has been playing for 2-3 seasons and send them back to when they first started with their skill developed over time and they will likely be higher ranked than they actually were back then. Thing is, the entire player base has been improving in skill, so relative rankings don't change. You can't just improve to climb, you have to improve faster than the average improvement rate of the player base.
