Why Armor sucks compared to MR vs flat pen - A quick look at efficiency

Malak··21 votes·9,403 views

Base costs per each point:

Magic Resist: 18g Magic pen: 31.1g

Armor: 20g Lethality: 22.5g

As you can see, the difference between magic resist and magic pen in cost is really high. You can completely nullify the effects of magic pen with about 58% of your gold, leaving you plenty of gold to do other stuff. This looks like a hard-counter scenario here.

Meanwhile, trying to match lethality point for point leaves you with no gold to do anything else.

Lethality is scaling armor reduction, at lvl 10 you only get 82% of it converted to flat pen, but that puts it at 27g per flat pen - still significantly better than magic flat pen.

"What about finished items, aren't they more efficient?" Nope, armor items don't get much better than 20g per armor in cost. Thornmail 78% efficient without passives, Randuins 78% too, and others are usually around 80-90% without passives. Not saying they are terrible items but armor is still costing about 20g per point. Chain vest, the most expensive pure armor item is also 20g per point.

TLDR: Buying armor sucks to buy while MR is fine

Not to mention all the armor reduction from champion kits, true damage being dealt here and there, and mixed damage champions (which generally are AD champions that do bits of magic damage)

This isnt a very good comparison. A couple couterpoints

  1. Champs have roughly twice as much base armor as base MR thus making flat magic pen much more efficient against squishy targets

  2. Your price comparison isnt really valid considering Lethality is a scaling stat that you dont get upfront. 1 Lethality =/= 1 magic pen

  3. I'm not sure why you're trying to say Lethality counters building armor when its the complete opposite. Armor hard counters Lethality. Comparing price of Lethality per point to armor per point is extremely meaningless because you can only get 18 Lethality per completely item. There is no 70 or 100 Lethality items like there are for armor. Saying Lethality costs 22.5g per point is meanigless when you have to invest in completed items to gain just 18 of it.

  4. There is limited amount of flat magic pen because as earlier stated, there is far less base MR, it isnt gated by level, and it is very easy to acquire from sorc shoes.

counterpoints to your counterpoints:

  1. This is true, but the point here is that buying armor doesn't do enough. This isn't an argument about ad vs ap but the reason we have more armor is also because ad champs have scaling free ad and auto attack damage.

  2. I already addressed this one in the post

  3. Lethality is supposed to be countered by armor as you said. However, it's not the case. Lethality's cost per point isn't that much higher than armor. You almost go even desite being "hardcountered" (22.5 vs 20)

  4. Isn't this counterpoint 2 but reworded? "very easy" still costs gold and 31g per point versus 18g per magic resist. Meanwhile you can buy 1 magic mantle for 450g and completely counter it.

This is true, but the point here is that buying armor doesn't do enough. This isn't an argument about ad vs ap but the reason we have more armor is also because ad champs have scaling free ad and auto attack damage.

There are actually a couple of reasons. The main one being that almost all neutral damage from things like Baron, Towers, Dragon, etc do physical. Auto attacks alone arent a valid reason. Being able to auto attack is accounted for in champions' power budgets and is reflected in their total damage output. As a matter of fact, if you look at which champions average the most damage to enemy champions its actually entirely AP champs that dont rely on auto attacks at all in the top 10 with the exception of Teemo who is a hybrid.

As for scaling AP, Riot went the other way with AP as oppossed to AD. AP scaling per level is done with increasing AP ratios on abilities more than they do for AD abilities. Its still scaling your AP every time you level even if you're not actually gaining flat AP per level. AD ratios can also scale per level but on average AP ratios grow more per level than AD ones do.

I already addressed this one in the post

Sorry, not digging through other discussions to find this exactly. Feel free to just copy/paste it.

Lethality is supposed to be countered by armor as you said. However, it's not the case. Lethality's cost per point isn't that much higher than armor. You almost go even desite being "hardcountered" (22.5 vs 20)

You are completely ignoring the point I brought up. The actual gold value of Lethality is just a conpletely meaningless value assigned by some guy on a wiki. That "22.5g per lethality" figure is a 100% meaningless number. You can only get so much Lethality per completed item. Lets look at it this way

item 3147 item 3814 item 3142 = 57 Lethality for 8900 gold

item 3075 = 80 armor for 2900 gold

The armor from a single 2900 armor item more than completely nullifies the Lethality from 3 completed Lethality items. Hell, just the armor components from thornmail completely nullify them for just 2000g. There is a HUGE oppurtunity cost that you're ignoring and that isnt accounted for at all in you 'gold per lethality' figure

Isn't this counterpoint 2 but reworded? "very easy" still costs gold and 31g per point versus 18g per magic resist. Meanwhile you can buy 1 magic mantle for 450g and completely counter it.

Just addressed your percieved costs values and how they are completely invalid in my above response

The problem with comparing lethality available too build vs armour is that completed armour items have really bad gold effiecency. Also an assasin is more likely too have a black cleaver than the spellshield item as it is now an assasin item due too the nonsense of flat pen counting after armor reduction.

Eedat3 votes

And what do you base your "armour items have really bad gold efficiency" on exactly? The "gold efficiency values" are based on literally nothing. They are literally just an abstract number pulled out of thin air by some guy on a wiki. They have zero meaning. If every single tank item has "bad efficiency", then its 100% proof that whoever came up with the efficiency of those items has severely undervalued defensive stats and overvalued offensive ones.

You could look on the wiki too find that out though. Gold effiecency is innacurate i wont pretend otherwise, but the value assigned too armor by the wiki is too high anyway. Which was proved by swapping hp in tank items with armor with the tank update.

Tank items are trash so only tanks with huge inherent tankyness can get anything out of them. Nasus gets very little out of ad and attack speed but still gets Tri over Iceborn, and yes I know hes a fighter.

... it is based on the price of said item compared to other base stats.

The Gold gold values assigned to stats are not measures of the effectiveness of those stats. They are simply base values meant to be used in determining the theoretical value of other items (or effects that are not item-related, such as Dragon buffs or Runes).

that ie means if if u pay 400 gold for item 1028 and 435 foritem 1052 and then u payed 200 gold to combine them

but only got 5 more ap out of it.. you effectively payed 200 gold for 5 ap.

and we know that based on the cost of item 1052 that each point of AP costs 21.75 gold

so for the item to be gold efficient it would need to provide 10 AP, not 5, that or 75 hp.

otherwise u would be better off just buying another item 1052

Z3Sleeper3 votes

Do you actually think they’re imaginary numbers?

item 1029 = 300g, 15 armor 300g/15 armor = 20 g/armor

It’s quite simple really.

The reason Lethality seems so cheap is because it’s

item 1036 = 350g, 10 AD 350g/10 AD = 35 g/AD

item 3134 = 1100g, 25 AD, 10 Lethality 1100g - (35 * 25)g = 225g 225g/10 Lethality = 22.5 g/Lethality

10 Lethality is still tied to 875g worth of other stats, which is why Armor beats it out. Black Cleaver mostly solves the issue and in rarer cases of more pure armor stacking, LW items combined with BC + Lethality beats it.

Armor rushing definitely has the edge vs Lethality rushing though (ignoring mixed damage, true damage, and champion passive armor shred/pen effects).

and they also have scaling AD, auto attacks, and increased damage from leveled skills while magic only has increased damage from leveled skills.

I think flat magic pen is good but buying MR really helps and you can really feel the damage reduction, meanwhile you can buy tons of armor and still get blown up by lethality, the thing you're supposed to counter.

The point im trying to get across is that buying armor does less than buying magic resist - that's it. Not a argument about ad vs ap or whatever

I mean...you can buy null magic mantle, +25 magic resist, for 450g. That already eliminates most of the flat pen you can get in the game. What more do you want? You can buy hexdrinker too if you're ad.

I should have been more specific I guess. It nullifies the Lethality from a completed Lethality item. Thought that was fairly obvious. But I guess I need to actually explain that buying a cloth armor doesnt mean you take zero damage from a Zed.

You spent 300g just to stop the lethality but the duskblade has plenty of other stats, so you didn't really win the arms race. You just went even. They only paid 22.5g per lethality point, and you paid 20g per armor. It's not bad at all but compare it to this:

If you buy a null magic mantle you profited over 200g because you stopped their magic pen with only 18g per point, while it cost them 31g per point of flat pen.

you can also built armor and get blown up by raw ad or a BC, the issue is not really lethality but how high physical damage overall is and how little armor does about that. Also, if you face a snowballing mage/ap-assasin, i can asure you that mr isn't all that noticeable either...and if you're a **NOT **snowballing talon and you're opponent comes back with a chainmail, you curse as much as a LB spotting a negatron...

I was mostly sticking to champions that have % armor shred (or a way to ignore it if they scale with ad)

Since this makes having higher base armor compared to mr alittle bit more reasonable.

Although, I do think armor and mr need some buffs to make their countermeasures not so overkill. Hopefully by not reducing their costs but increasing armor given by things like item 3110 and item 3143

yes but AD have base AD (and usually more than APs) while AP champions start with 0 base AP also AD champions usually deal more pre-mitigation damage than the AP and have more acces to %armor penetration (also common in many AD kits) and true damage for compensating that, plus they have their AA as DPS

give AP champions base AP and AP damage on-hit on their AA and we can talk about the difference in base armor and MR

Yes, because turrets and minion damage is something people give a shit about when they build armor. Not the fed Zed.

Full AD team wins easily by tricking the enemy team into stacking armor, a shit stat, instead of building mostly damage like you should.

Armor wouldnt effect true dmg and mixed dmg regardless so I dont understand what that has to do with armor? But you forget the fact that armor scaling is way higher, so it would make sense for it to be less efficient. Lethality and most other stats are stats you need through items so of course they are going to seem efficent then most armor items. Not to mention comparing lethality items to armor is really pointless. Think about it lethality items give, ad, lethality, cdr. Against armor items which give armor and health, sometimes an extra stat but not often. Then there is the fact that you are comparing armor to a stat that is never by itself. lethality will always be better because a single lethality item will give ad and lethality, but most single armor items only give armor. Regardless, you need all three lethality items to actually even get through armor, also the fact that if the assassin is not snowballing lethality isnt going to do much. You can't compare the two, lethality is literally countered by armor regardless of the cost, it still is countered by it so I am not seeing the point being valid.

When you itemize vs mages you can get item 3111 what also decreases the cc mages usually have. As a tank or bruiser you can go item 3194 and item 3065. One of them has magic damage reduction, both increase healing. Assassins can go item 3814 to block an entire spell (what is crucial to mages) and item 3156 together with bruiser to get mr and magic shield and 20AD + 10% life steal and spellvamp. And do not forget there is even a rune that gives you a magic shield. For more closecombat magic damage dealers, there is item 3001 to gain mr while increasing your damage AND sustain on spellcasting.

Armor items give you mostly damage and health. item 3068 item 3742 item 3075 while item 3143 which reduce the attackspeed of attackers and decrease damage taking by criting basic attacks (so not Yasuo Q, GP Q, Garen E, Aatrox Q, Jhin Ult, Ashe W you get the picture) and of course something like Zed that can get Black Cleaver to reduce your armor does not even do crit or basic attacks you a lot. Which is why item 3047 are not as good as item 3111 in that regard. Mages can get item 3157 and ad champions get item 3026 . Both give armor comparable to item 3156 magic resistence while also giving AP or AD respectivly. But while item 3156 tries to keeps you alive through out the battle, these two try to help you cheat death. And while you can counter Assassins with it, sometime once the stasis is over or you are revived you are dead anyways.
