Hi there, Gnar main here, and I want to teach some of you who are interested in Gnar or looking to play him on how to manage one of his more difficult mechanics, his Rage! This will hopefully teach you how to get better at managing it and to get some good Mega Gnar action in team fights, so let's get started.

First off, Gnars Rage mechanic works like this, every time you attack something, whether it be Baron, Dragon, minions, champions or even wards, Gnar generates rage over time that, at max rage (100 Rage) essentially turns him into the hulk of League of Legends, gaining various new abilities revolved around teamfighting mostly. For the purpose of this tutorial, I will be displaying the Rage numbers here:

note, this happens over 3 seconds per value

  • Lvl 1: 4 Rage, 0.5 Rage on Non Champions
  • Lvl 6: 7 Rage, 0.75 Rage on Non Champions
  • Lvl 11: 11 Rage, 1.25 Rage on Non Champions

Gnar gains rage through battles, meaning it's very essential you understand how to trade well with both Gnar forms to effectively get good results from the 2 forms. If Gnar does not attack anyone or anything in 13 seconds, the Rage will decay.

So basically Gnar gains tons of Rage through kiting his opponent, because he gains more from that. This is where being good at both forms comes in. If you are good at kiting, and manage to do good amounts of damage to your opponent but you aren't good at using Mega Gnar, then what's the point? You can also gain rage from minions, but from what I experience I usually don't get enough to mega until atleast levels 3-5.

So what's the big deal about mega anyways you may ask? Many newer Gnar players find success simply staying from afar using Mini Gnar. They hate using Mega Gnar because it's different from what they are used to and they don't know how to use it correctly, so I'm going to teach you. There are 2 ways to play in Mega form, Trade-winning Mega Gnar, and Teamfight Mega Gnar. Trade winning Mega Gnar is most commonly used in lane, and to break it down for you there are simply ways to use it.

Trade-Winning Mega Gnar, is what it sounds like. You almost always win trades when in this form mind a few champions such as Darius Jayce who are direct counters to Gnar. You want to keep on the surprise when in this form. Your opponent knows you are about to go Mega so if he was smart, he would fall back, but if he doesn't look to do 2 things, push the wave, or trade. Some common Mega Gnar combos for winning trades are, EWQ, QWR, and ERWQ. Be sure to have everything warded, and don't be scared to go all up in the enemies faces!

Teamfight Gnar, is what it sounds like as well. You teamfight. This is the hardest, yet most effective way to use Mega Gnar. Mega Gnar has almost broken teamfighting power due to the fact that he gets super tanky, has tons of CC, AOE damage, and when used effectively can engage, kill the ADC, and set up and peel for his team. This is where managing the Gnar Bar comes in handy. I even slip up sometimes and don't get it when I need it but with practice you will get it a lot! I will explain how to manage the bar in the next paragraph. Simply put in Mega Gnar you wan't to use everything you have, from flash to Ult and any active. This moment is the most important, and spam ping your team to go in. When in Mega look to instantly stun the enemies into a wall for the crit damage. If you pull off this on 5 people, 99% of the time that fight will be won, however, be sure to stay clear of any issues before going in. If it fails you lost all your pressure. This has to be percise and perfect to get the most value. Ult them all, w, q and you should be good!

Now how do you manage Gnar's rage bar effectively? It's quite simple actually, it's all about wave control. I'm going to give you a situation, and I want you to answer what you think. I will tell you if you are correct or not! So your team is gravitating towards Dragon, and you notice about 2-3 of the enemy team is hovering behind Dragon themselves. There is a big wave at top, you have Teleport and Flash, What do you do?

  • Clear the Wave and back
  • Teleport straight to Dragon
  • Walk over to Dragon/Back and walk over to Dragon
  • Clear wave then Teleport to Dragon

If you answered the last one or the second to last one, you are on the right track! Managing Gnars bar is all about getting a close to mega Rage bar then getting prepared for a teamfight, don't be afraid to be the engager! If you think you can get Mega Gnar for minion waves and get out and be ready for Mega in an upcoming teamfight, do so! Just remember, it takes 13 seconds for your Tired passive to be gone so you can gain more Rage.

I hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial and it helped you! Please give feedback and tell me what you think. Tell me what I should improve on in the future if I chose to make another tutorial!

TL;DR: Mega Gnar wins most trades fairly easily, Use for teamfights as well. Save Rage for teamfights and don't waste it.

It may have changed now because I haven't played him in a long time, but with my old build, mini Gnar was a lot scarier than Mega.

It was hilarious watching people retreat when Mega popped, and then engaging when it ended thinking I'd be an easy kill... I just wrecked them.

It's definitely changed not due to any Gnar changes, but because teamfights are so essential nowadays. It makes me laugh too seeing people run :)
