It's not perfect, but it's a whole lot better than the old system.

mid or feed

Haven't actually heard this in a long time LOL

EkyonKun1 votes

Ugh...You obviously haven't been playing the PBE recently >.> Not that it's extremely common, but you'll have people that sometimes just lock in their favorite champ and say "mid" even though someone else already called and locked in a champ for that role. I have actually met 2 people in maybe 50 games that have unironically said "mid or feed"

I blame the forced blind pick system.

EDIT: They changed to a no-ban draft pick. Pure bliss.

You know, sometimes I que up as fill, just so other people don't have to be autofilled.

Then I offer trades and switch with whoever STILL was autofilled on my team.

It almost always ends up we win those games. I think I did that in promos once.

Auto-fill and New Champ Select are different things though

Awoof3 votes

Not really? I mean, auto-fill only exists because of it and couldn't without it.

Gelmous1 votes

yeah but the champ select can exist without autofill

DrCyanide1 votes

Not in a sustainable way. More and more people kept ditching Support from their queue preferences, even some Support Mains who needed a break. It created a compounding problem that couldn't be fixed without Auto Fill.

For composition, calling "fill" in Bound Pick gets you Support only ~35% of the time.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

No autofill exists because riot wants to keep their abomination called dynamicQ/flexQ and riot said they would remove it if it negatively affects Q times, instead they shove autofill down our throats. So please remove this and let me wait a bit longer and MAYBE i dont get the janna d5 0lp otp in the jungle.

Awoof1 votes

I assume your first part is implying that without flex queue, we wouldn't need auto-fill. Debatable, but fair enough. Btw you don't get auto-filled when playing support, so you are rather unlikely to have that Janna otp in your jungle.

Gelmous1 votes

he's talking about autofill not the champ select

Salron1 votes

Far worse than the old system, people get their offroles far less frequently, which means they are that much worse at them and having an offrole player on your team is much more punishing now than the old system

KlydeFrog1 votes

no no no its more like cool i dont have to supp(which is the least liked role in the game and evey one knows it because its boring af and more or less useless and you get 0 credit for doing anything and all the blame when you lose lol) people realized that they dont have to supp so yah

KlydeFrog1 votes

it was better that way because then peopel werent forced to supp every single game. I just put fill for my que and guess what i play supp 96% of the time and 3 % i get jungle and the other 1% is a combined top mid adc

This is the real reason riot has shortened game times. You now spend twice as long waiting for a game, so games have to be quicker to make up for it.

i guess at least we get through half a dozen ques slightly faster.

You dont even know how much fun it is to have somebody dodge after you've been in queue for 20+minutes. This system isn't perfect but it's close enough to it and definitely the best we're ever going to get

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

It's the worst we ever had and one of the reasons why game quality is pretty much non existant.

Que?

######See, it's clever because "que" is Spanish for "what" and you've been saying "que" instead of "queue" so I'm simultaneously questioning your spelling and acting like I'm confused and asking what this thread is about

Riot needs to make the undesirable roles more popular... Instead of autofill, they should temporarily give some sort of reward incentive, like increased capsule drop rate, for picking fill or whichever is currently the scarcest role until they manage to rework support into being as popular as the other roles. When you go to queue up, it should say something like the following instead of "Auto-Fill Enabled".

Current Role Needed: Support [Tool tip when hovering: "In order to prevent excessive queue times, players will have an increased chance of receiving honor capsules and key fragments if they queue as Support or Fill."]

Or if there are roughly equal numbers available for every role (ie., if/when support gets revamped): Current Needed Role: Any [Tool tip when hovering: "There is not currently a scarcity of any particular role.]

Seriously, Riot should bribe players into picking up and learning the least popular roles. Players who pick the least popular roles improve the game experience for everyone else. Proper incentives could be enough to nudge players who can play the scarce roles into doing so more often, and could convince others to learn how to play the scarcer roles. Surprising people by forcing them into an unfamiliar role with autofill creates a toxic experience for everyone involved...

Leetri1 votes

Increased rewards for picking support doesn't work, pretty sure Riot's already covered that. People will just queue as support and then go mid or top anyway to get the reward. Playing support has to be rewarding enough on its own, and surprising no one it's the least popular role by far in all games. People don't want to make others shine, they want to be the cool guy in the spotlight getting all the kills. Unless Riot somehow manages to crack that riddle no one has been able to solve before autofill is here to stay. Or they remove all role selection and we're back to the "mid or feed" days.

  1. The same role-stealing issue occurs with autofill, but probably much, much more frequently. Autofilled players very often refuse to accept their autofilled role and try to force their teammate to trade with them or bully them into dodging instead. The current situation is far more toxic than incentivizing the scarce role(s) would be.

  2. Players who would intentionally queue for support with the intent of stealing another person's role would lose out on honor capsules and key fragments anyways, because their teammates would not only not honor them, but they would also report them for griefing. It wouldn't be worth filling with the intent to steal a role if the reward is simply increased rates of honor rewards, because the players who would do that probably aren't receiving honor rewards. Honorable players won't risk de-leveling their honor by griefing to abuse the needed role incentive.

By the way, I agree that support needs to be made more appealing on its own. Needed role incentives would be a backup plan in the meantime to replace auto-fill. When/if all roles become roughly equally popular, the needed role rewards would automatically turn themselves off and would show "Current Needed Role: Any". If something happened that caused a role to later become scarce, the incentive would automatically turn back on. It becomes a contingency plan to prevent long queue times just in case it's needed.

Honestly THIS IS THE WIERDEST THING. I put fill thinking "ill get support most of the time and maybe a few other things occasionally", but in the last four fill games ive gotten ADC twice, mid, and support...

here's something that I've done to counteract those yasuo players: Orianna support. It forces enemy team to still build MR so they cant go full armor for defense. You can do damage yourself if the yas is a retard. And you can set up the ults for him so that it's just press R to win for him. I've done it in ranked and i've gotten a 0/5/0 yas to 7/5/1 by end as ori support; all he did was press R for the 7 kills. It's unviable if yas isnt in the team tho.

If we are going to be forced to autofill then we should not be penalized for dodging autofilled games.

Snowplosion2 votes

the only thing I have to say: QUEUE its spelled QUEUE.

jjcool991 votes

well since the quality of the games will be awful you are actually spending that + the entire time of the game still waiting for a real match so really the que times are like 50 mins+

jjcool991 votes

team builder was amazing btw solved so many problems less trolls no auto-fill only had slightly longer wait times for way better games.

Leetri1 votes

Slightly longer? My queue times were 15 minutes on average. Eventually people gave up and went with the Teemo support just so they got to play a game.

Blåbæret1 votes

Autofill should be a toggle: Those who want fast queues can turn it on, those who (like me) doesn't give a crap about waiting 2-3 additional minutes can turn it off. Losing because your team got autofilled is the worst feeling ever.

DarkRitual1 votes

You'll wait 2-3 minutes. How about 10? 20? 35?

The potential issue is the pool of supports (and lesser so jungle) starts to dry up fairly quick. As more and more people queue up without selecting those roles, the backlog of teams needing those roles filled could potentially make the queue times overly long, to where people jump out and queue for it, or enable autofill. There's some ways to help, but they are not perfect in themselves.

General Esdeath 1 votes

I love the people who say "Then we can go back to the old system!"

Like, the old system with assigned roles wouldn't be that bad. Rather wait 10 minutes in queue than waste 20 in a game with a support who only plays top.

Miror B1 votes

Koreans are arguably the best players in the world. Koreans embrace autofill as it allows them to learn multiple roles and be familiar with what each one actively does. Thus autofill isn't actually as bad as people claim it to be.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

Autofill seems to be working.

Your problem is asshole players who won't take their turn filled. Then understandably maybe the 3rd and 4th guys who are now filled but weren't the first times and feel cheated by the first assholes and do it themselves too.

If everyone just took their turn when autofilled, there would be no problem. And people would actually know how to play their off roles.

If there's a problem on riot's end, it's that apparently dodge penalties aren't high enough that so many people are willing to dodge a game rather than play fill. They just figure their expected LP loss from being filled is worse than the dodge penalty, so they take the dodge penalty. The dodge penalty is supposed to discourage selective dodging and result in dodges only for trolls or necessities - so I'd argue this all just implies that the dodge penalty needs to go up pretty significantly.

Although i will admit that one thing is definitely riot's fault: equality between the two teams and transparency of that. Both teams should have the same number of autofilled players and ideally in the same roles. The client should then notify which roles are autofilled on both teams (e.g. both teams supports have been autofilled). People dodging because they know their team has 2 autofilled members and suspect the other side has none isn't surprising.
