Zed nerf: Shadows expire twice as fast under turrets

I mean if Azir uses mana and gets to outrange people, while zed is free why shouldnt he share the drawback?

How about because Zeds shadow has a 14 second CD and Azir's soldiers have a 8 second CD. And the soldiers can attack multiple times whereas Zed has 1 Q and max 2 Es per shadow.

And Azir only spends mana on the soldier cast, not the actual damage, whereas Zed spends all of his energy bar just to do a single ranged combo.

Cindikle14 votes

And then gets a good bit of it back. Then waits those 14 seconds and does it again.

Azir's soldiers can be walked out of much easier than avoiding Zed swapping with his shadow and pushing R on you.

Azir also wont be tower diving you unless you're a for sure kill and he has an escape plan. In which case Zed would of killed you already while Azir was working on his plan.

Not saying this idea would fix him. But your counter augment isn't very strong.

Durzaka20 votes

Good bit of it back... He gets 40/80 energy back IF he lands both skills. If he is landing his E while youre under tower, youre doing something very wrong.

And a single poke pattern every 14 seconds is really really fucking weak among ALL mid laners. So the fact that it is manaless is what balanced that out.

Zair Umbras4 votes

Considering most have to wait about 14ish seconds to have the mana to actually be able to poke properly without going oom? Yeeaah. Base regen for most is around 6-8ish per second, then 3 from Doran's. When your abilities to poke cost 50-60 and do half the damage of Zed's Q? Well, that means you need to toss it twice to match his damage, but it's also hard to compete with 1450 ranged Q. All you have to do is toss the clone behind the caster minions then toss the Q, do quite a large amount of damage from the one ability and if you manage to also be able to E the person, you get 2 seconds off your W's CD. Most Zed runs 5% CDR runes then another 5% from masteries, rush the Brutalizer for a total of 20%. That 18s CD just turned into a 14.4s CD, 12.4s if you land the E, which against a short ranged mage who's trying to counter-poke against your 1450 ranged W+Q combo, it's not too hard.

I should also note how I'm getting 1450. His shadow goes 550 range in the direction of your choosing. His Q has a 900 range. I should note Ezreal's Q is a 1150 as a comparison of poke power. Comparing him to other champions as well, Ziggs' Q has an 850 range to toss the bomb and can bounce up to 1400, though let's face it, if you're hit by the bouncing Q, you're likely bad at sidestepping or slowed. And for even more 'WTF' is Nidalee's spear is 1500. Only 50 range more than Zed's combo. Yes, the dreaded death spear BARELY out ranges Zed's W+Q combo.

I will also note that the change mentioned won't actually affect Zed in really any way since his R Shadow is never under the turret to begin with since he'll R you from out of the turret range and now be in the turret range. His W only lasts for 4 seconds and most Zeds just W then instantly Q and that shadow is pretty much useless unless your opponent is stupid enough to walk near it for you to press E OR you decide to teleport to it so you can R. Either way, if you halved its time, that's only 2s. Not... really effective...

Mecha MaIphite12 votes

The longer he throws it from, the easier it is to dodge.

Krfin1 votes

you are forgetting that Zed's W Q combo range reduces the amount of over all damage he deals... If he is in range for his Q and his W's Q then he deals more damage. The range is meant to be like that... His kit makes the enemy have to realize where all his shadows are located at. If zed has the time to walk 1450 sum units away, and the enemy is still standing right on top of the shadow, then they are doing something wrong.

Zair Umbras1 votes

Wut. Why would you walk away from some one as Zed? I'm saying his max range is 1450, that means he has more than the entire screen to hit you with a Q, which even if both don't hit, the single one will hurt. The only reason Zed's poke is usually a bit small early on is because he throws it through minions. With a boosted 550 from the shadow and a decent knowledge of how his Q works, you can hit anyone with at least one.

Considering this range though, as I mentioned, this idea to reduce his shadow duration under the turret is useless. Zed doesn't stuff his shadow under the turret to sit there for the entire duration.

Cindikle2 votes

I assume the OP is mainly thinking of lanning phase. Which he will only be getting 20 back. IMO Zed is fine late game as is if he is talking about late game. This is why Riot claims he's a healthy assassin. How he assassinates after lanning phase is fine. It's his early game power that makes problems happen. Although with more tank junglers and fewer fighters that synergize with assassins, he has not been as bad.

That's still 10% of his resource pool. More than Azir will get back from regen in the time it takes for Zed's shadow to come back up. That is a good bit. Not amazing, but it's enough.

Assuming level 6. Rank 3 Q, Rank 1 W and E. Full combo costs 155. Hitting both Q's makes brings it down to 135. He will regen this before his shadow is available again. Azir cannot repeatedly harass like this. He will go OOM. Since he wont likely be casting W on cooldown, he'll probably get an extra Q or two in there as well between shadows without running into energy problems.

Again, not saying I support the OP's idea. But Zed has it a lot easier and has fewer restrictions on harassing targets under their tower.

loudmouth323 votes

Thank you for explaining this to these people. God bless you. Most of the time when you use your shadow and your E and your Q it takes all your energy. People always say "Zed has no counter play" Yes he does. There's a lot of counter play to zed. If you see him use his Shadow then E and Q you know 2 things: 1. He has no energy. 2. He has no moves to use for a few seconds. That is plenty of time to go up to him and damage him in some way.

I'm getting sick of so many people saying that Zed needs a nerf and that he is too OP. Yes he is very strong but he's also very hard to learn. I don't care what anyone says. Zed is a hard champion to fully master and yes a person who hasn't mastered the ways of the forbidden ninja don't do great. I can tell if a Zed is bad within the first 3 minutes of the game and I can ruin his game because of his inexperience.

And one more little rant about Zed haters. Look at his Kit. His Q is a skillshot that deals less damage depending on how many people it goes through. His W does no damage (it does give him bonus AD but no actual damage is dealt by it) and allows him to move over terrain and also gap close to champions. His E is a short ranged AOE damaging spell. KEY WORD SHORT. It literally only hits people right next to him. Now lets look at someone else. Now I'm not calling Kat OP but her kit seems a bit overwhelming especially in an experienced players hands. She has a POINT AND CLICK RANGED DAMAGING Q (Zeds is a skilshot) Her W is basically the same as Zed's E. Her E is a fucking cancerous blink that she can cast on almost anything and it deals damage. I think it's stupid that she can jump to an ally with a move that does damage and not damage them. She can also jump to wards and to fucking minnions. That is cancer. Not to mention her annoying as passive that allows Kat players to just spam QWER and then do it again and again and again. Plus all of her moves do damage unlike Zed's. So before you go calling him OP look at what his kit really is.

You should have stopped at the first two points. The difference between Energy and Mana makes that pointless. Zed uses most of his Energy, but that can be regenerated within 12 or so seconds. If you use up your mana as Azir, you will have to wait up to 20-40 seconds based on your mana regeneration at the time, and that is to create the soldier.

Azir's sustained damage is, however, the reason they have a reduced time under towers since that would be insane if Azir could just place two soldiers under your tower and ACTUALLY zone you out of the lane. Zed can also only make one shadow with his W, where as Azir can make up to three, I think sometimes for for a split second or so.

Durzaka1 votes

The difference between Energy and Mana is very important, it isnt pointless.

The enemy has a very very clear window of opportunity to absolutely crush Zed while he is out of energy.

They opportunity is much more vague/hard to tell against a mana user, and is often not there except against people with very long CDs on their escapes. (oh look, Azir used his Solider, i can go harass now, oh wait, he has a second one, and his Q, and his E. fuck me right?).

I agree with your other points, but people so often pretend that energy is 100% always the superior resource, which isnt true.

Vistha Kai1 votes

I played Azir only a handful of games and I totally agree. If you are smart about poking with Azir you will do Zed's work better with minimal cost - assuming you weren't spamming soldiers just to farm, in which case learn to play anyway.

What Zed has to sacrifice for one poke is: his only farming tool, his only escape, only CC and all of his energy. What Azir has to sacrifice for one poke is: 1/2 of his farming tool and MAYBE 1/2 his CC - 1/10th or 1/4th of his mana respectively.

The change doesn't affect anything outside of turret range, and Riot has already made similar changes such as the Point-&-Clicks to Skillshots like Rengar Cassiopeia VeigarRyze , so I don't see why is it so detrimental to change Zed's W style like Azir's.

Zair Umbras2 votes

There's nothing detrimental about changing it, which is the problem... It wouldn't actually do ANYTHING. He'd have 2 less seconds of his shadow being under the turret... It's not like his R shadow, his escape, is ever underneath the tower. You R from out of turret range and into it, then R out of it again and his W only lasts for 4 seconds and if you use it under the tower, you're doing a quick W+Q combo. Since you can't launch 2 Q's within that 4 seconds, shaving off 2 seconds won't do anything.

Zed is a champion whose weakness is the downtime of shadows. If you can't dive someone without being able to back out soon, why should Katarina's ult do as much damage under turrets? Why should Leblanc's platforms for her Distortion last as long when she goes under turret? You really have to think about what changes would do to a champion before implementing them.

If a lot of people got what they wanted, Zed would have a 5 second cast time to switch to his shadows, a 300 second cooldown on his ultimate, and his Q would have the skillshot range of Galio's auto attack. He has a high skill cap, and is quickly falling off in this tank meta, since his 2 biggest weaknesses are becoming meta: reliable CC and tanky as hell champions who can survive his burst. If you want to nerf a champion who is countered by basic map awareness and teamwork, you need to start polishing your Bronze.

By the way, Zed is useless without his shadows. You AA him to death with Orianna and he can't do a thing.

þang3 votes

I disagree, he's the only assassin that hasn't received a nerf and is the only one who can push a tower. Something's not right there. I honestly think Riot shouldn't have nerfed many of the assassins they did, but to leave the AD tower pushing assassin standing strong while the AP assassins can't even roam anymore is just stupid. Zed has Tower pushing, AND assassin power that the AP assassins don't have. I mean Zed is easy to counter in lane with exhaust and such, so I understand how to counter zed, my problem is his map pressure compared to any other AP assassin considering they only had kill pressure, never turret pressure while zed still has both.

Juan Choilos9 votes

Zed has been nerfered before....and zed has counters ass well.....play chogath...play ahri(skill matchup) ziggs can roam and has turret pressure because of his passive, stop nagging...your saying things just to back up your opinion even if they aren't true, zed has been nerfed there are ap mids who can roam and push there are counters to zed. sheesh

þang4 votes

You must be forgetting Ziggs was nerfed too, but he's not an assassin anyways. Ahri had to be buffed to be even considerable nor is she or cho'gath an assasin. Yes zed has counters and I never denied that. I know Zed has received small nerfs here and there but the AP assassin nerfs got way out of hand compared to the small nerfs Zed suffered. and I'm not nagging I'm simply stating my opinion on game balance ;-), if you don't like to hear people's opinions you're on the wrong thread.

Besides, I never said I supported OP's original suggestion to nerf zed's shadow, I don't think it will change anything even if they did, my point is Zed is still strong hence why he is a top tier mid laner now while many of the AP assassin fell off.

You know what's funny? He's not really top tier. With the recent changes in the metagame, he's actually pretty average/mediocre.

It's very similar to Lee Sin. He has a lot of perceived power, but his actual power is much lower.

þang1 votes

His pick/win ratio would disagree in competitive play, but you're welcome to believe what you want.

Average/mediocre doesn't mean bad. It just means that there's nothing incredibly special about him. Compare this to pre-nerf Sejuani after Cinderhulk came in, or Warwick after the introduction of Devourer. It's not that Zed is bad, and in my opinion, he shouldn't BECOME bad. But he's not particularly amazing, either. Even in highly competitive games, Zed falls off late game; teamfights roll around and he's got one, yes one, single shot at killing somebody. When he fails, he's left to poke, poke, poke, using his rather weakly scaling shurikens.

Further, if you look in competitive play, it's very very rare you'll see a Zed win lane or even PUSH a good Cho'gath or Urgot into tower.

Again, Zed is not bad. Nor is he amazing. I honestly feel like he's in a rather good place, balance-wise. He's a split pusher by design because he is one of the only assassins who a) does NOT have some form of reset on kill/assist and b) has a very long cooldown on his ultimate.

Compare this to Leblanc, who has a short cooldown in addition to the ability to do loads of damage using her 3 basic abilities, or Katarina, the Reset Queen, who can ult twice in a single fight, or Talon, the AOE God of burst assassins.

As somebody previously mentioned, this is the key:

People don't complain about champions they have issues with during the latter part of the game, because everything is all mixed together. People only tend to complain about early/mid-game dominant champions because those are the ones they have to deal with personally. This was the problem with Lee Sin, this is the problem people see with Leblanc, and this is the problem people see with Zed. Each of these three champions has a dominant laning phase and an incredibly difficult late-game. This creates a perception of being more powerful than say, Xerath, despite Xerath being undisputably more helpful in teamfights and poke as the game goes on longer and longer.

RavenMagus1 votes

Honestly, my only real problem with Zed personally is just how safe he is in 1v1 dueling. He can ult someone, proc his mark, stand around and see if he needs to add in another few autoattacks or wait for his cooldowns again or just chill for a few years over your corpse, and his ult shadow is still sitting there waiting to give him a trip back to safety.

It's bad enough that towers mean absolutely nothing to Zed, but he can dive so far and so long and still be safe with his ult because the return trip lasts forever. I think it's a cool ability, but I really wish the time on the shadow forced Zed to make a decision rather than being able to wait past the ult's timer and still getting the trip back.

There different champions with different play styles. Azir and zed are very diffreant. In fact thats like comparing sona and fiora in playstyle. Yes they both sustain..anything else? Sona and fiora Yes they both can poke...anything else? Azir and zed

Junkο2 votes

Azir can also have up to 3 soldiers at a time and at 40% CDR they basically have no cooldown and can all attack at once.

Zed can only have 1 shadow, EVEN IF you hypothetically use W, hits 5 enemies with Zed's(original)E at max CDR twice, the first shadow will simply disappear when you cast a new one.

Oh and can Zed use his shadow to damage turrets?

Gavran1 votes

No he can use his auto attacks instead because his pushing and tower taking tower isn't tied to his abilities.

Like... do people really not know the advantage AD casters have over AP casters due to that?

Junkο2 votes

Except that, that isn't how attacking turrets works. First it blocks 30 AA damage for the first third of the game, then it either deals your bonus AD or 40% AP depending on which is higher (and note that you get more AP than AD for the same amount of gold, not even counting Rabadon). And on top of that AP casters can teamfight, while Azir can both teamfight AND take down turrets because his W nukes one for 1/10 hp late game if not more.

Krfin1 votes

Zed can't teleport back to his W when he is out of range... The only reason why zed can teleport back to his R half way across the map is because it is an Ultimate and it is a 120 second cooldown.

Hes a decent mid with strengths and weaknesses. Zed is a healthy champion, leesin is a healthy champion. Some of the worst changes ever seen where the ryze, rengar*, veiger, and cass.

Do NOT USE VEIGER AS A FUCKING EXAMPLE OF A CHAMPION THAT WAS "fixed" BY RIOTS NERF HAMMER. OR CASS OR RYZE AND DEF NOT RENGAR ( tbh hes ok but still)

Marthian2 votes

Not saying that the rework fixed Veigar, but he was far from healthy before his rework. 2 click abilities that did high damage (his ult if it hits, almost always kills the enemy apc, even in one shot), and then heaven forbid his stun cage. The argument that you were able to avoid it prior to the added delay is bullcrap as he just places it over you and bam! Essentially free 2 second plus stun with absolutely little warning. Made it so easy to get kills. It's a miracle he still even has his ult in it's current form, I hear more people complaining about his ult AFTER the rework than before.

Junkο2 votes

That's why he was 100% pick/ban with 100% winrate right? Not like casting all his abilities starved him completely out of mana right? Or that he dealt 0 damage before finishing 2 items and farming 100 AP right?

Why shouldn't his ult exist? It's a single-target nuke with no utility, of course it does more damage than most other ults.

This is actually a great idea. It doesn't actually hit zeds damage, it just prevents him from being such a lane bully tower diver once he hits six if he is ahead. If you're under turret, Zed is wasting his shadow to harass you, and your jungler isn't ganking, good luck winning the game with a jungler that bad.

Dodging skillshots isn't as hard as you think, especially if they're the width of Lux 's Q.

kunkudunk1 votes

Its also significantly faster than a lux q. Besides, if the threat of your skill shot makes them lose cs, it is still a way to further snowball your lead. Just cause they can dodge it doesn't mean it is easy to while not falling further behind.

Edit: also his q is energy not mana so missing doesn't matter as much.

You obviously have never played Zed in lane like many people do.

If you try to abuse your shadow to harass, you will run out of energy quickly. Also, Zed 's shuriken does less damage if you're behind minions. Almost half, actually. And please remember that before level 6 and decent items Zed gets destroyed by most ranged mid laners, and almost every single melee laner. Therefore, you can abuse that so hard you'll get arrested for rape.

If a shuriken on a 6 second cooldown that costs 37.5% of Zed's full energy is difficult to dodge, good luck playing against Ezreal . Just saying. Dodging skillshots is something you should learn to do by level 30. Also, just using Q is underwhelming without AD. A full combo is only devastating if you take two of those shurikens to the face, and then if you do dodge them you can kick Zed in the balls as many times as you want for the next 18 seconds. You can invite the jungler to lunch at mid, too.

Your logic is also extremely flawed. "Just because they can dodge it doesn't mean it's easy to?" There are much harder skillshots to dodge than Zed's Q, Dark Binding and Steel Tempest, to name a few. They're also more devastating and are more spammable, and arguably deal more damage. But please, complain about Zed's shurikens.

kunkudunk1 votes

Dark binding is not harder to dodge than zed's q, it goes so much slower. And steel tempest has like no range other than the tornado, which is also easier to dodge than a zed q since you know when it's coming. And even if he runs out of energy it is full again in 20 seconds since energy recovers so fast. Sure his q isn't the hardest to dodge and I am well aware of it doing reduced damage through minions. However, don't act like he runs out of energy and stays out, it regenerates very quickly.

This would make sense, except Zed's Shadows can't hit turrets.........

I'm surprised that wasn't other peoples main argument lol

but seriously, Azir's soldiers actually pose a threat to turrets, and Zed's Shadows do not. and, Zed uses a good bit of his energy pool to cast a shadow, and he would have to blow his ult in order to have more than one
