Malzahar [Small Gameplay Update]

Stacona··4 votes·533 views

What I will be introducing to Malzahar is an escape tool, but with the added utility will take a small notch off his damage to compensate. I also want Malefic Visions to feel more like a sustain damage spell by max rank even without cooldown reduction. In short, I will emphasize Malzahar's hyper mage status even further. Another tidbit is that Malzahar added utility I will suggest will make him less ultimate reliant to get off damage with his Null Zone.

Null Zone (W): Passive: Targets afflicted by Malefic Visions that took damage from Null Zone will be rooted in place for 1.35/1.45/1.55/1.65/1.75 seconds.

Malefic Visions (E): Cooldown lower to 12/10/8/6/4 seconds; Cost: Lowered to 60/65/70/75/80 Mana Damage adjusted to 80/110/140/170/200(+100%AP) magic damage over 4 seconds. New effect: Malefic Visions deals 20/25/30/35/40% increased damage against Minions. Refer to the Edit

So this may just seem like a majour damage nerf for the utility of a root on his Null Zone when it deals damage to a Malefic Visions target, but having a more reliable damage output on Null Zone because of the root keeping them in place to take that % max health damage and the root making Call of the Void easier to land greatly increases his damage output; plus voidlings cannot be kited when attacking rooted targets. The reason to why I decided to lower the base damage on Malefic Visions was because this is his point and click ability and Null Zone is not a snowbally spell damage wise because it is a late game spell and best against tanks while Call of the Void is a skill shot with a moderate delay. Anyways, something needed to be traded for having extra utility and most importantly an escape for Malzahar, and the delay for putting Null Zone directly on a Malefic Visions target is roughly ~0.5 second before taking damage/getting rooted in place so that there is never this instant root so there is a chance for the opponent can react before getting rooted, but as an escape mechanism you will probably always get either the root off to escape or Null Zone zones his attacker away with the threat of being rooted in the pool so that Malzahar can get away. Also the same unit can only be rooted one time per Null Zone. Increased damage to minions effect is so that Malzahar's waveclear is not ruined since a root does not increase his damage output at all against minions.

Hope you appreciate the thought! ~ Stacona

EDIT: New Idea:

Call of the Void (Q): Active: Silence adjusted to 1.5/1.75/2/2.25/2.5 from 1.4/1.8/2.2/2.6/3 seconds

Passive: Targets struck by Call of the Void that are afflicted by Malefic Visions will be rooted in place for 1.25/1.5/1.75/2/2.25 seconds

Malefic Vision (E): Damage and Cost will remain the same as LIVE values; Cooldown lowered to 12/10/8/6/4 seconds ** Post Edit:** Scratch it, everything is the same except for the Call of the Void and Malefic Visions interaction of the root and slightly lower silence duration to compensate for the root.

It would be an interesting change for sure but honestly i think Malzahar is fine as is. When i play him i never really have any issue with his kit or lack of escape/engage whether i win or lose. There are a few issues with Malzahars ult that i have, like being able to cast any form of interrupting CC at the same time as he ults and cancelling it. This is big for someone like Warwick or Katarina, but its not instant death for them. For Malzahar, cancelling his suppress is not only detrimental to his play-style but also to his survivability. This makes him useless afterwards, as using 3-4 spells puts him very low on mana and he he has fairly high CD's. Not to mention unlike Katarina who has escapes and Warwick who has amazing sustain and naturally builds tanky, Malzahar has no way of escaping or fighting back should his ult be cancelled.

Now i know your root would help with this, but i feel that you lose more then you get. The damage on Malefic Visions is the only thing that can save you or at least kill them if you die. So what if they are rooted, they can still attack you and you are missing a huge chunk of damage to retaliate for that semi-useless root. See what im saying?

Basically your changes would make his survivability in lane a lot better, but it would severely weaken his team-fight capabilities and costs him a lot of early game power. So overall i feel it is not totally worth to lose around 140 base damage for a 1.35 second stun (i usually have 5 points in E and 1 in W).

Adding the root makes his basic spells interact with each other making him less ult reliant for the lock down I did increase the ap ratio on malefic visions so that his late game is intact for hyper mage malzahar status and with cap cdr and rank 5 E you can have two target afflicted by your E

pretty much i don't want malzahar to be this overwhelming force in lane while having hyper mage supremacy which is why a lot less base damage for the root add on, but increased AP ratio for the late game scaling (for the most part is still a damage nerf on his e overall, but a lot more reliable passive, q, w damage makes up for the damage loss)

p.s. root not stun, but root silence is a near stun when combined together

the damage on null zone is actually a lot, but because opponents do not sit in it unless you ult them into it you would never know so the E-W interaction and easy Q damage is more than enough to make up for a early game damage loss on E (late game the damage on E is close to equal to how it currently is with the ratio buff, more/less depending on how you build)

I agree that he does need more interaction between his abilities and Morgana has a 10 year long root to keep you in her pool, so its reasonable Malz would have something similar. The problem is the damage loss on Malefic Visions hurts his laning power at early levels. I dont know how you build Malz but i dont build a lot of AP early on, i usually get Catalyst and then Liandry's and then Rabadons, sometimes i skip Catalyst and go straight for Liandrys but the point is i dont build a lot of AP early game because his base damages are already so high.

Excluding Runes and Masteries this is a somewhat normal build for Malzahar: item 3027 item 3151 item 3089 item 3135 item 3020 item 3157 . This gives you 572 AP if my math is correct (again this is without Runes and Masteries) so his Malefic Visions does 320+458 (80% of his AP; rounded)= 898 damage. Your changes make is so it deals 180+572= 752. Thats still a loss of 146 damage although it will do 1128 damage to minions which is just overkill and kind of useless as it already can kill them without assistance with this much AP. Its possible my math is wrong but from what i got you are still missing out on 146 damage for a root that wont even help you survive, if they are going to kill you they are still going to kill you the only difference is you can delay it by hitting you root and silence. This is only kind of a bonus if they are Melee, if they are ranged this didnt help you at all.

Honestly i think its just the fact that i dont want him to have a root that is causing me to not like this change so much. I think there could some cooler mechanics put into his kit, like Voidlings have a small slow on their Basic Attacks an the more Voidlings you have out the slower they get and it also increases the length of how long a Voidling can stay. This rewards you for spamming spells but comes at the risk of running out of mana, Malz is one of the few mages who has always had this problem with mana. There could be a slow on his Null Zone that gets stronger the longer you stand in it until you are eventually slowed by 99% similar to Wither. His Q could mark them in addition to silencing them, if they stand in Null Zone they are slowed, if they are hit by Malefic Visions they are feared for a short amount of time. Idk i kind of just dont want him to have a root, that makes him too similar to Morgana. Also if there was going to be damage nerfs it would be to his W, that is his most OP spell because %Hp damage is hella BS.

the damage amp to minions is for early game wave clearing, has nothing to do with later on, later on malz can clear waves easily with q and e

The root would be nothing like morgana and be completely unique to malzahar on how it works

also i took flat base damage because I am emphasizing malzahar's hyper mage status suppose to an eatly game bully- the low cooldown on e means more voidlings and always up malefic visions for sustain damage, % damage makes sense as a late game damage source and to kill the tank line so that he transitions into that late game damage dealer for teamfights smoothly--- yes malefic visions does have a damage nerf overall, but the more reliable Q and W makes up for that missing damage and allowing voidlinfs to get free autos off as well so his kit very much gets much much stronger with a snare, taking damage off malefic visions was because this is a point and click spell so it has the least counter play to it- but on a late game sustain damage front will be very strong always dealing damage to at least one target at all times

Stephenizgod1 votes

The problem is it takes skill away from hitting Q, yea it reduces his overall damage but it also makes it guaranteed damage. This lowers his skill cap a whole lot, whats the point of trying to hit Q's when you can just root them? Part of what makes Malzahar so good is that if you can hit the Q's you have a right to be a lane bully, if you are missing them then you are wasting mana and will not be able to do anything when they attack you. Giving him a root just seems like a bad way to fix his unreliability and vulnerability. Id prefer something less impactful like a slow or increasing the duration of his silence when standing in Null Zone.

Stacona1 votes

It has been brought up to do the root interaction with his Call of the Void (Q) to targets afflicted by Malefic Visions (E) this way Call of the Void is the dedicated CC item with a silence and potential root which in turn helps out your Null Zone with the lock down being less reliant on your ultimate but still very skill dependent with having to land your skill shot for your CC or channel your ultimate for guaranteed CC

It is better then before for sure and a whole lot more balanced tbh, this also makes him less ult reliant. It also improves his laning phase as it doesnt really touch his 1v1 (his 1v1 is already one of the best so its hard to make it even better while still keeping him fair) but it does help with his 2v1 when he is getting ganked. The only thing i would do for balance-sake is to increase the mana cost or cool down of his E late game so he cant spam E and have 2-3 targets hit by one Q get rooted.

Having said all that i still dont know if a Root is what Malzahar needs, he is actually really balanced right now, if he seems weak its because mobility is valued too low by Riot and champions are not paying enough for it. That does not mean Malzahar needs a buff, it means mobile champs who are not paying properly are need of re-balancing. Take LeBlanc she kills someone faster and easier then Malzahar can but she also has more reliability and survivability then he does. She is someone who needs re-balancing, not Malzahar.

I just wanted to give Malzahar a tool that makes his basic spell kit work together without having to have use ultimate up just to use his basic spells together

Stephenizgod1 votes

Ye i dont know why you were downvoted so much because the idea behind it is not bad at all but i think Malzahar is in a good spot right now. The trade off for his high damage and excellent 1v1 is that he is not really safe and his damage is not reliable. I agree that if they do not want to nerf mobility a bit more then they do need to buff him so he can at least compete with them. A root is just too much of a buff and i know it seems like a small added bonus but that really would change his play-style more then you think. Idk how much you play him or what rank you are (not that it matters to me but im Silver 4 so im sure its hard for you to take my opinion seriously) but i think a Root is not what he needs. I do think he needs more cohesiveness between his abilities other then EWRIgnite, so definitely keep working on it.

Edit: I tend not to downvote or upvote threads like this where i dont agree but i also dont disagree, but ill upvote this just because i think it needs more attention and so its not negative in downvotes.

I think malz is in a good spot too, i just want to add synergy within his basic spell kit

I personally just want QSS and Zhonyas removed forever, but that wouldn't happen until Lee Sin got nerfed, aka post-apocalyptic setting. So, since we all know that Riot wants to fuck over underplayed champions (Veigar), they should take a break and just use this post instead.

Stacona1 votes

I actually play Veigar, just get used to the changes on him- but the thing is no one played veigar before the changes so post changes nothing changes anyways - but i still like veigar and the cooldown buff [event horizon, his trap] is actually a massive attribute for Veigar (still think solo lane veigar is shit, but is better than what he used to be, support veigar got buffed however) [the only time you need the stun is against instant teleport champions, which i REALLY want Riot to make his stun to work against those champions as well because they are the most problematic types, or remove blinks altogether because of the extremely ZERO counter play that they bring]

overall, not sure what you are trying to get at- but yes hourglass is an overpowered item

Can't tell if serious, or just didn't even play him.

The stun was way too oppressive before, but the current version is the exact opposite problem. I'm still curious as to what they would like Veigar to be currently. Riot are currently not wanting the burst mages to be as powerful as they once were, killing you out of nowhere (Which is anti-fun for the opponent). They've made him a lot less reliable. In particular, his Dark Matter (W) is now a hell of a lot harder to land on champions, and is now mostly used merely for wave-clearing. It seems that the developers who were working on him weren't sure as to how to make him less oppressive, but without being strictly worse than before. However, currently he's just incredibly unreliable who is beginning to lose his identity to create more "Counter-play" to his primary spell. In doing so, he has lost a lot power. Not just in the "Catch out player X for getting close" (Which shouldn't be a thing. Counter-play inherently is a good thing), but also reduced his defensive capabilities and his ability to reliably land his Dark Matter on champions.

Stephenizgod1 votes

Thats not at all what this post is about...

RisenDarkKnight1 votes

I think that it would make more sense to tie the root to his q instead of his w. That way landing his q becomes more important and you still drop the w under the target if they get rooted. To be clear, I mean his q should stun the target affected with malefic visions, not root everyone it hits. I think having too basically unavoidable cc's with loots of damage would make his kill potential too high

Stacona1 votes

then the root will probably be scale'd higher to something like 1.25 to 2.25 based on call of the void's rank because hard to land his Q than E obviously, but that may be better for counter play still so yea

Balderdash10001 votes

Don't touch Malz! He's fine the way he is. If you want a different play style, play a different champion. There is no way in hell I'd agree to send Malz through one of Riots famous reworks.

Stacona1 votes

its isnt a different playstyle - it is making him less ultimate reliant read the post before you downvote and comment stupidly

Balderdash10002 votes

Ok. You're giving him a root that he didn't have before, while lowering his damage, and you're going to claim that that's not going to change his playstyle? Really? Dude, there's nothing wrong with Malz as he is, and I have absolutely no desire to have Riot "balance" another fun champion that I like to play into unusability.

Stacona1 votes

he would be not unusable, quite the opposite, adding utility to his kit makes him more viable and not less viable

Balderdash10001 votes

Umm... Have you ever looked at what riot tends to do when they change a champions kit? No my friend, I like Malz the way he is.

Stacona2 votes

I am done with you, you have zero rationale whatsoever

Evil Jester1 votes

I don't like this. I like the way his kit is. hes the only champ I can win lane with pure waveclear alone.

Stacona1 votes

i never got rid of waveclear and in the edit i just lowered the silence duration for the root duration, this way he can use his W without having to use his ultimate

Orbv1 votes

Idk this change makes him sound like Brand, land one spell to land a CC. He's fine as is. Galio, Katarina, Rumble, Xerath, Ziggs all rely on their ults to kill anyone.

I understand that people want to make him less ult reliant, but his kit is already amazing. He has a huge AoE Silence when most have been removed from the game. He has % health AoE. He has minions to deflect skillshots, and he has an E that jumps from dying targets. Adding a root will actually serve very little purpose post lvl 6. The chances of someone landing a malefic visions and call of the void and IMMEDIATELY following up with his Ult are very high. There are few reasons not to. It also does not make him any safer, landing a silence on an enemy is going to prevent them reaching you anyway unless it's Yi, and if it is, how are you landing Q?? Since it is only a root, spells still work.

Stacona1 votes

spells dont work if you are silenced

Orbv1 votes

I know, that's why I said only Yi would reach you.

Stacona1 votes

but yea, the changed idea was less about him having an escape and more better synergy among his basic spell kit initially it was escape and synergy, but the skill aspect was brought up, which i agree malzahar should be a difficult champion to play
