if/when Garen gets reworked, I don't want him to play like other juggernauts

a common complaint i see with a lot of players is that garen feels like a worse Darius, because they sorta play similar, but Darius has in-fight sustain and more counterplay etc. a lot of threads I see want to give this to Garen as well; adding fight sustain, making him a sustained threat, etc

so my question is, if you don't like his similarities to Darius, why push him to be more like Darius? While Garen definitely has design flaws, I think he at least has a unique role as the most assassin-like of the juggernauts, as well as being one of the hardest champs to burst thanks to his W. he's very good at killing people in a short span of time once he gets rolling, and i think he should retain that almost assassin or skirmisher-like quality but in a healthier, more up-to-date way, if he ever gets a big-scope rework to modernize him (i know he's getting a new W, but as far as we know nothing else is happening). Also remember that he lacks in-fight sustain because he is by FAR the tankiest up-front juggernaut thanks to W giving him such high damage reduction; i would say only a tank-ulted Trundle is more durable than Garen is late game

one of the biggest strengths to the juggernauts is that they are probably the most varied and diverse subclass; most or all of them play differently from each other despite most of them being very simple, and most of them have unique roles and for the most part they don't step on each other's toes like other classes do so often; darius is different from illaoi, is different from shyvana, etc. my issue with pushing Garen into more traditional juggernaut stuff is that it would make him more like Darius, and i'd rather play up what makes them different. push garen to be much stronger in 1v1s and skirmishes, fights that allow him to make use of his ability to constantly disengage and brute force people with his raw durability, where Darius will excel in bigger teamfights due to his reset potential, sustain, and his heavy teamwide DOT damage once he pops his passive.

if Garen does get in-fight sustain, it shouldn't be related to how many champions he hits like Darius/Illaoi, because he lacks the incentive to hit as many people as possible. this will probably come at a big cost to his immediate durability, but it would give him standard jugg strength of combat healing.

If Garen was going to be the "assassin juggernaut" then he'd have to be the squishiest of all juggernauts.

not really, Garen already works as the burstiest juggernaut, he trades sustain for durability. because he isn't mobile like an assassin, he needs the durability to be able to walk away after he kills his target

the juggernauts who have sustain are the ones who end up being squishier, since they make up for it by having lasting power in a fight

The problem is more in a 1v1 situation and that he's a resourcless champion. Meaning he builds a lot of CDR to make his combos more frequent.

Burst combos tend to have some window of breathing room, and even with lots of CDR, the target has a window where you can burst to kill them because they are squishy to compensate.

Garen is not squishy, so that window where his cooldowns are up aren't actually a weakness. They're a trap to trick people into staying in the hopes of punishing him before his cooldowns are up. Then they realize their mistake because unlike Garen, they can't take their opponents burst combo twice.

ideally if he ever gets a big change he'll have more in-fight counterplay to remedy that, which i think is all that really needs to happen to put him in a place where he can exceed at many levels of play

I like to think he'd be more skirmisher-like but having the potential to burst you down is a trait that skirmishers have, hence the assassin comparison. also that his current priority is to take out a carry as quickly as possible

Do you want him to be assassin focused, and require the kill to get this escape/durability? Or do you just want him to do short trades with high damage? Also Garen doesn't really have any disengage, besides Q'ing the target again and then running away. Also, do you want to give him sustained burst or actual incentive to do skirmishes? Because right now Garen kinda just slaps you with 0 damage autos until his Q comes up again?

A fix would be making him lose passive resists on W after it runs out so he actually had incentive to disengage. Also a longer cool down on Q to lower his DPS. You talk about Garens skirmisher like quality, but usually it just ends up with him cowering until he can out stat check you (his disengage is pretty terrible and if you're stronger, youll have won the trade by the time he manages to disengage.), and then he just bruteforces you to death the exact same way a Shyvana would (except less damage on the normal autos, made up for a big burst on R)

I agree. Good thoughts. I think making Garen unique is very important, and he and Darius do have quite a bit of overlap.

I keep seeing these posts about Garen reworked, or nerf Garen, or change Garen passive/ult. Where is this all coming from?

because garen is really in a shit position now, and despite having seen a decent buff in between patches he just keeps dropping further in strength with almost every patch.

h desperately needs some changes/buffs.

i dont think anyone whos in his right mind thinks he should get nerfed.

i can see him not fitting into the meta, I don't think he really has been god tier or meta for.... well, since I first picked up league. But he's always been a tier1 pick in my book, and can definitely still carry games. The problem I see with the way other people tend to play Garen is that a lot of people build him almost entirely tank, and the way the game is now, that just wont work. This season I typically will run a minimum of 2, and sometimes 3 AD items on Garen, 4 if you count Frozen mallet which I sometimes rotate into my build for him.

Now granted, I am a Garen main so i'm already comfortable taking Garen into pretty much any matchup, and judging by your name I would assume you are as well.

Honestly just feel like if people build a good bit of damage on him in place of tank items he is fine.

his w might make him upfront tanky, but sustain clearly outscales his upfront tankyness in too many scenarios. i wouldnt mind if he was situationally tanky with the ability to sustain himself through extended fights.

if this game would support that kind of itemzation, id actually like if they just focused on his unique quirk that is his crit scaling. sadly, the only crit item available to him at this point is infinity edge (rip atmas and old ghostblade). hed need a yasuo passive or something like that to make it work.

yeah i think he'd be more interesting building crit

possible solution is doing what they did with xayah/jhin -- adding a direct damage scaling to his spin that ups with crit. either that, or having crit amplify the AD ratio (beyond the crit damage itself), like if you buy 50% crit, the AD ratio is bolstered by X amount, so you're compensated with less AD by having your ratios become more significant. but that seems kinda messy

the problem is rather that there wouldnt be any appropriate crit itemization available.

building crit for one would leave him rather squishy, and since ghostblade got reworked, and atmas removed, there arent crit items that benefit him really.

you know what would be interesting? if garen had a similar upgrade system for his sword as gankplank has for his ult, or viktor does have for his staff.

only instead of having an upgrade path, he would chose one of the 3 possible upgrades that lock him down to a certain playstile for that game. it would affect his q and his spin in different ways.

if he could chose for a game to just buy a crit upgrade, or an increased silence duration, or a sustain mechanic.

do you want to play as an anti-caster and get a long silence, do you want to go toe to toe with marksmen in terms of damage, or do you want to be able to take extended fights against drain tanking teams.

i mean. halfway.

his passive is clearly being buffed, which increases his lane sustain. since his early laning is really weak, i guess its one way to do it. i dont know how useful increased out of combat regeneration is going to be below 20% health. thats usually the point where youd recall back to base instead of waiting 9 seconds for it to kick in and risk getting pounded by a jungle gank or dived on.

his w seems more like a tradeoff instead of a buff. hell struggle more in extended fights against sustained damage than hes already doing now, but can get more damage reduction in clutch situations.

overall i think the direction theyre going in is ok, but id hoped they would do a little bit more with his his kit.

the problems he has are still the same or worse. the lack of in combat sustain means hes going to lose extended fights against opponents with lifesteal or inbuilt sustain by midgame. even against certain tanks that can sustain with shields or inbuilt heals. especially now that the damage reduction duration is cut in half.

the regeneration on his passive kicks in at 3 seconds at lvl 16 instead of 4, but its still only out of combat regeneration on a champion who cant disengage combat once hes committed.

i would actually not mind trading some lvl 16 out of combat regeneration for versatility on his passive and making it situationally available in combat aswell.

if the out of combat regenetion past the lane phase wouldnt be as strong as it is in return for healing just a little bit during fights, it would help him so much more. if you need more out of combat regen, you can always buy warmogs.
