It's 2019, why isn't there a mastery requirement for picking champions in ranked?

Change the number of champions owned requirement to having at least 10k mastery on that many champions.

Nobody should be first timing a new champion in a ranked game, period.

It's 2019, why are we still asking this?

Riot doesn't want to cut off all new entry to Ranked by forcing grinding for mastery. And it gives absolutely no way to measure relative skill, it's just grinding.

Also, trading champions is a thing. Enforcing a mastery requirement would remove that thing.

Because you can have 75567864578864356 mastery points and still feed the living hell in the game. Just like you can have no points whatsoever and perform the absolute best in the entire game. Mastery points don't really translate into skill. A bronze player with insane mastery points on any champion is still a bronze player that will make the same mistakes as one.

Nope. You're free to play whatever you want in whatever queue in whatever position, as long as you're trying to win.

Disagree, its ranked there should be more strict rules applied. There is no reason someone shoud be playing a champ for the first time in ranked. I am not sure it should be 10k mastery but you should have at least tried out the champ for a game or 2.

But if you only play ranked, where do you try out champs?

Well first of all, you have to level up to level 30 before you can play ranked. That is a grind in itself and can easily account for a time for people to try out champs. Otherwise you would have to try them out in a normal game post level 30. It is not that hard to figure out.

Ok... they try the champion... they'll feed just as hard regardless. I said before you can have 6869776577758358 mastery points and still feed like crazy just like you can have no mastery points whatsoever and still perform the best in the entire game. Mastery is completely useless and does nothing at all. Bad players will still play badly, good players would do decently regardless

you are missing the point. It's perception, people will get less tilted if they know someone isn't first timing a champ, even if they are bad. Its about creating a positive environment within the game, having confidence in your team mates even if they still suck.

what positive environment? what perception? people will still feed their ass off. People will still be frustrated regardless of whether someone is first timing a champion or not. People do not care if you are first timing anything, they care if you say you are first timing something. If you are one of those people who go "let's go to op.gg and see where my teammates are compared to the enemy" and get tilted because the enemy has one "gold" player in your silver rank game then guess what? you will be tiled regardless of what happens or anything. People do not have any confidence in the anyone at all. This is not going to change just because someone has played a champion before. They will still call you names, they will still flame, they will still tilt and they will still give up or feed or whatever

Then they should be banned from ranked. Sorry I am not going to agree with you. I am trying to help make the game better not just complain about it. And if riot doesn't care about making their game better then oh well.

you are not making anything better. You want them to be banned from ranked? cool I guess the vast majority of people are instantly banned and only the most casual of players will be left. You can disagree with me all you want, means little to me.

You go into a ranked game and pick a mechanically intensive champion that also has a high burden of knowledge, which you've only played once in your life.

You're laned against a Diamond III Riven main with 2 million mastery.

You're going to feed, period. It doesn't matter how good you are at the game. You can't take a champion that you don't know how to play into a ranked game against someone who is an expert at their champion and knows all the match ups and expect to do well.

no you won't. Sorry but what is the context here? diamond 3 vs diamond 3? because I would assume that the other diamond 3 will know how to play against a Riven, regardless of the champion of choice. A bronze player will act like a bronze player regardless of how many mastery points they have with a champion, a challenger player will play like one regardless of how many mastery points they have with a champion. Player skill is not tied to mastery with any one champion. There is more to the game than that and guess what? if we go by what you are saying then every single player in the world would feed everyone unless they literally one trick a champion.

are you serious? that's not even a valid excuse.. why the hell would you try out first time champs in ranked just to make your team lose their promotionals or lp?

normal mode and practice mode exists for a reason. it's selfish to play something you've never played to ruin the rest of your team. unless that player was good or careful which is usually not the case, they int and throw the game.

Also how are you a moderator with these type of comments? This does not help the discussion at all, in fact it is intentionally obtuse and antagonizing.

Sorry, I was not intending to be obtuse nor antagonizing. In helping the discussion, I offered a unique take on the topic, considering players who don't play normals or arams. You have to try a champ somewhere, and while putting restrictions on what you can or can't play seems like a great idea, I really think it'd create more problems. You're asking for players to have some experience, well after that bar is set, players will ask for just a bit more experience.

And also, think about the PBE and new champions. If you've been paying attention to the PBE and actively participating in it, you have a significant advantage over others who have little/no experience playing against that champion.

Cool, thanks for elaborating on your comment, I appreciate it. I don't know that you have convinced me that it wouldn't be helpful but you have some good points.

The reason I am for something like this, along with a lot of other changes to ranked (harsher banned from ranked system, more consistent LP system, better honors/rewards system, and a bunch of other more controversial ideas), is because I would like to see ranked become a more fun, competitive environment and be considered a true sport. As it is now it is sort of a grindy slop of a system that isn't very rewarding.

Anyway, I have a lot of ideas that will probably never get heard. Thanks for the conversation!

honestly i agree with youi say it should at least be level 3 before you can play it in ranked it fixes the smurfing issue people may have and it fixes possible trolling or people who may not be ready to go into ranked joining.

but on the flip side it makes another mechanic into ranked tha may annoy people who aren ot used ti the old pick order scheme of things people just want to play their main role and wont put in time into playing anything outside that anymore. also means people would need multiple champs lvled up in each role to play ranked becasue of bans/pics

Because earning 200,000 mastery (at a bare minimum) in order to play ranked is absurd.

I can whip out my 30k mastery Lee Sin in ranked and I'll still int Whats the point

Dweeebles1 votes

Not sure it should 10k but a few games at least would be nice. There is no reason why someone should be first timing a champ in ranked.

This caught my attention pretty quick.

  1. TBH, I get why you'd be upset about someone on your team first timing a champ, but, at the same time, everyone has to start somewhere in ranked and If its really that players first time he will most likely end up bronze or iron. Making these types of mistakes is part of learning the game man, and forcing that process into a given direction makes the game less fun. New players have to experiment and see what works and what doesn't just like you had to. Everybody who plays this game is still learning to get better and that's how it needs to stay. Maybe after a few games that player who first picked a champion in rank will be like "oh, this first time picking in ranked isn't working, and its tilting my team mates, I should stick to mastering 3 champs for this role." After he realizes how ignorant he was he'll probably be on here writing some shit like "Nobody should be first timing a new champion in a ranked game, period." Then the cycle of learning continues.

300k mastery at Warwick! can't play him well, just play him. 30k master on urgot, slaughter! First time Janna in ranked, stole a triple kill with a Q! I don't see why you need to have X amount of mastery points? Fasted a 1 million M7 master Trynd and killed him 3 times in 2 min.

Umm.... so, mastery matter? [slayer-jinx-wink]
