Help for Riven please

I really like playing Riven. She is incredibly fun and her late game is so awesome she's just such a fun champion all around. For being pretty new with her, I feel like I have most of her basic moves down and know how she works and stuff, but I want to get better with her. Everything I do with her is below.

  • Ability order - Q, E, W (R at 6, 11, 16)
  • First buy is doran's blade and 1 potion I usually build Death's Dance first, Black Cleaver second, and then Scimitar or Bloodthirster third and then the other one of those I don't already have. Ionian boots, then my last item or 2 (after selling boots) depends on the situation of the game.
  • The only real combo that I have down is the 3rd Q, W for stun, E for escape, but I also have some random ones that I dont even mean to do sometimes.
  • I try to ban Teemo in most of my games, or MasterYi
  • At first I tried to play an aggressive early game because I thought she had that. Turns out it isn't as strong as I thought and I'mm probably transition to a safer early game and farm under tower (which I have been getting better at)
  • I'm not too sure when and if I should roam. I usually just hard farm top and maybe get gromp or scuttle or even red buff if the jungler is nice
  • TBH my csing has never been better ever since I started playing Riven, so I think I'm okay in that aspect
  • I split push basically whenever I can

I'm sure there is more that I could have included, but I probably just dont remember it at the moment. I have yet to play her in the jungle but I want to try that as well. If anyone can help me in understanding Riven a little more, please let me know.

Thank you to anyone who could potentially help me

Riven destroys teemo. I didnt read anything else because you banning teemo means you dont know how to riven.

Well, duh I dont know much about Riven. Thats why I made the thread... I'm also new to top lane altogether (coming from mid) and I know that I just hate Teemo in general so he must be a bitch to lane against

Top is mid lane but you can only get ganked 3 ways instead of 6-8. One thing to watch out for is after you die from a gank and TP back.....make sure the Rengar or whoever is not just sitting in one of the top bushes waiting to kill you right away for the second time. This is not only tilting, it is very good for the enemy top laner because they'll be lvl 6 when you are 4-5. If you are new to top lane you might want to learn a champ who is kind of like Riven but not as hard to you learn how to push and freeze top lane before jumping into playing a very high skill cap camp. Renekton, Darius, and Irelia are all decently strong right now and easier to get good with than Riven maybe you should try one of them out first . Oh and btw never ban Teemo. Once you learn how to destroy him he's easy mode. GLHF

Riven has a good set of combos that you can choose from when you engage it's fun. Just get creative and know your mechanics.

Funnest part of Riven for me is lane trading against champions who don't auto win lane (those champions being shit like darius, teemo, kennen, quin).

Riven hasn't been an 'all in at level 1-2' type champion since like season 3. Unless the enemy makes a huge mistake, you're going to have to make several clean trades with them in a row before it gets to the point where they have to back off under the threat that you'll go in and finish them. When you get your ult and a big item or two it gets different again, depending on who the enemy laner is and how far ahead you are you may be able to all in them from full hp with your ultimate if you have the mechanics for it.

Consider q into the enemy, w- auto them, and e-q out as a decent way to trade in lane when you are able to get close enough to hit them with your first q without taking significant up front damage. If they are too far away to hit with your first q, don't try to trade with them - you have to wait for a chance when they step too close (such as if they go to cs a minion or step up to harass you).

Playing Riven is a long but fun road, and there's even a new skin coming out soon. Gl out there!

Honestly your best bet with Riven is just to keep playing her. Usually people really start to pick her up around the 75 game mark so you've got quite the ways to go. Right now champions like Teemo and Yi may feel problematic but once you get more of your combos/reaction times down -- you'll find that it's more strong early bruisers or silences that are awful to fight against (Darius, Garen, Renekton).

As far as builds know it's important to decide based on your match up in queue (draft pick) if you're gonna go more skirmisher (with conqueror) or more assassin (with electrocute). Obviously skirmisher is preferred against tankier teams while assassin is better against squishier ones but it also depends on your own team comp. Once you make the decision the builds do end up changing slightly.

item 3812 item 3071 item 3026 -- usually preferred for bruiser riven

item 3142 item 3071 item 3147 -- usually preferred for assassin riven

There's tons of other tricks for Riven but ultimately it just comes down to practicing her. Her kit is complicated and takes a while to pick up.

Thank you for the response! I will be sure to keep playing her :D

The only one other thing I will add is that 40% CDR is absolutely beyond mandatory on her. If you go bruiser riven you end up taking your secondary tree in resolve so you can't get transcendence from the sorcery one. Therefore finishing your death's dance, black cleaver and ionian boots always comes first.

If you go into assassin riven you do have the option to go into sorcery for transcendence so that will provide you 10% cdr at level 10 which can give you more flexibility over what you build so that you could build armor/mr boots as an example or delay your black cleaver if no one is building armor (but that 20% cdr and the armor shred on her is just so good to pass up).
