I love how Aatrox with a single tank item can be tankier than a full tank maokai

That Maokai build is horrible, is probably why.

Yeah. There’s like almost no health built [sg-lux-2]

I didn't know building health would increase my damage mitigated. Care to elaborate?

Armor with low health does very little, particularly against true damage. Armor isn't some kind of special shield; what it does is make your current health pool last longer. More health? Then that armor gets even more effective.

It really just comes down to math. With that much armor, your HP purchases would be more effective, especially considering how much armor the enemy team mitigates (Yasuo ult, Yasuo/Draven Conqueror). The formula looks like this:

Effective HP = HP x (1 + Armor/100)

Of course, this isn’t quite the whole picture. The formula is best for burst, because you also have shields, regen, and heals. In fact, you can use the formula to see how much value you get out of a shield/heal.

Your maokai build is terrible. Finish your relic shield line next time.

You tried to stack up Armor versus a conqueror- crit-true damage Draven. That is, of course, what you’re supposed to do, but As he’s carry and you’re support, he outpaced you big time.

ok that build makes my head hurt.

i am a maokai OTP with nearly 1 million mastery points on him and 1000s of games

clearly you are playing maokai support...

your build should include HP his passive that heals him scales on HP the only hp items you have is item 3097 125hp item 3075 250 hp for a total of 375 bonus hp. my typical maokai games i have 3200+ hp nearly every game regardless of top, jungle or support.

this is how i would have built as support maokai vs that team comp item 3401 item 3143 item 3047 item 3109 item 3190 and either a item 3800 or item 3065 or item 3083

lets say you go with item 3800

the stats from your items item 3401 350hp item 3401 200% base hp regen 10 % cdr item 3143 400hp 60 armor plus AOE slow active, reduced attack speed on any one hitting you and reduced crit damage taken (Yasuo Draven crits) item 3047 20 armor blocks 12% of damage from autos (works against draven, yas, shy, and even thresh autos and any autos from aatrox plus if those autos are crits it blocks 12% of the crit damage ) item 3109 250 hp 40 armor 10% cdr ( helps protect your adc or what carry you need to with the passives and gives you bonus armor and ms towards those you use it on ) item 3190 30 armor 60 mr + shield for entire team which scales on BONUS HP ( this should be more then enough MR vs that team comp ) item 3800 400 hp 300 mana 30 armor 100 % base hp regen 10% cdr + active to help you engage

so lets add this up 1400 bonus hp 180 bonus armor ( plus all the passives from the items like AS slow, Crit reduction 12% reduction from auto damage ) 60 mr 30% cdr 300 % base hp regen 300 mana

with maokai's base stats at lvl 16 1940 hp 97 armor 50 mr 1000 mana with out runes gives you grand total of

3340 hp 277 armor 110 mr 1300 mana which with all the items passives + runes will make you nearly an unkillable monster

and if you go aftershock , boneplating, conditioning, and overgrowth + mana flow ban + transcendence you will have about +200 more hp another free 18armor for 299 armor and 14 free mr for 124 mr +250 mana and another 10% cdr for a total of 40% cdr + regen from mana flow ban passive.

not forgetting the free armor/mr you get from aftershock every 35 seconds when you cc/engage a target

I appreciate the detailed feedback as opposed to the one-line "your build sucks" responces.

Would a general rule of for every 1000 health go for 100 combined resistances work?

thats ok for a guideline. the thing is you cant blindly build with out taking into consideration the enemy you are facing ( laning against ) and the team you are facing . if their Ap carry is fed stacking armor isnt ideal. if they are a heavy ad/crit comp getting MR dont really do much

your build path and items have to be fluid from game to game from situation to situation.

but for maokai as a champ you are gonna want these stats however you build to come by them, HP , CDR/MANA , ARMOR , MR

he uses his abilities to fight and trade and engage/peel so having mana/cdr to get more abilities off makes him more of a threat. he is a tank/front line and his passive scales on his max hp so having HP increases the heal from his passive and allows him to stay alive to do his job as the tank/front line

having armor and mr just amplifies him being able to stay alive to do his job. this is how a champ like maokai is able to do a lot of damage, its not cuz he builds damage but cuz he has alot of cdr and tank stats to be able to sustain in prolong fights/engages allowing him to use his kit and the aoe with it to do a lot of damage over the fights.

now someone like me who pretty much only plays maokai i have some more advanced builds for damage and what i want to do with him. but ill save that for later it seems you need to understand how to build him and use him as he is designed.

as far as some of the items you built on him arent bad in general on him it just wasnt ideal for the game you were in. frozen heart is good vs a lot of physical auto attackers cuz it is an AOE AS slow. but it provides no HP and just cdr/armor and mana. so getting this vs 2-3 or more auto attackers is good. (like double adc comps , a jax or something that does majority of damage via autos but dont have crit ) thornmail is ok as an item vs a single lane opponent or one fed adc champ but it scales with armor and need more hp to make effective. but once again it is effective vs AUTO ATTACKS i assume the chain vest + negatron cloak was going to be a stone plate? that is ok cuz you will make good use of the passive being in the middle of fights and the active makes you harder to take down. but once again in your build you lacked HP

if you were to play maokai top item 3068 is the most common 1st item build on him, it helps him clear waves , be tanky with armor and hp and give some aoe damage

i typically play him top mostly so my common build is item 3068 item 3001 item 3065 with these 3 items it gives me nearly everything i need armor , hp, cdr, hp regen, mana, mr and they synergize with each other really well

such as mask helps the aoe sunfire magic damage and maokais damage in general mask gives hp when you cast abilities which is amplified by spirit visage passive when you take damage mask gives you mana to help you maintain mana spirit visage increase your healing from passive your passive is empowered by all items based on the HP and passive of spirit visage you have 20% cdr , 60 armor 110 mr , 1250 hp, 300 mana plus all the passives and typically i will go ninja tabs as boots unless alot of hard cc

ill sub spirit visage if im vs a lot of magic dps/dot for item 3194

from this being your core items/builds everything from there is situational for what you need to be effective

jungle maokai is very very similar where you get item 3751 into cinderhulk instead of sunfire.

What other options are there for tank items? Deadman's plate doesn't work well on a character not meant to be doing damage, and neither does iceborn gauntlet. The only other lines would be item 3056 item 3800 item 3109 item 3190 item 3143, the last of which is about 1000 gold inefficient with the coldsteel passive not stacking.

So thanks for your useless comment with no productive value whatsoever, dickwad.

That is no way to talk to a fellow summoner.

Dead Man’s passive only increases the damage of the next auto, every non mage autos in fights. The other part if the passive helps with engages because you are moving in faster. Dead Man’s and IBG are not meant only for those that deal damage. They are tank/fighter items, but are 90% defense based.

Righteous Glory is similar with it’s active. Yes, the armor is lowers, but you get a good amount of mana and health.

Sunfire grants both armor and health, and allows you to damage by standing among them.

How about Warmog’s for the extra health? Or finish building Targon’s Brace into...whatever it’s called now..The tank support item.

The point people are making is between Cleaver, Yasuo’s ult, armor pen (if Draven built it) and true damage from IE and Conquerer, all that armour meant little to them nothing without extra health.

In short: Armour/MR without health is not beneficial, especially against shred, pen, and true damage.

I like the armor build, since you're focusing on mitigating the damage from the team, which is almost fully AD. The Frozen heart is good. I don't like Thornmail, as you shouldn't be the focus of the damage dealers and aren't dealing enough damage to get focused (imo). You should have upgraded the targon's brace to its 4 ward counterpart. I'd have also gotten item 3109 item 3800 or Locket.

I don't think its a matter of who is tankier here . . aatrox, apparently based on itemization builds, deals a lot more damage . . or atleast SHOULD. So that is why you cannot kill him before he does to you. You have health, armor, and resistance. He has . . damage, armor penetration and a bit of lethality . . all that shreds defense builds.

PopcornBunni1 votes

I'm not even talking about the one-on-one duel. I'm talking about how a 360+ armor maokai against a full AD comp mitigates less damage than a champion with no innate shield, no damage reduction, and no resistance boosters against a mixed damage team with a build that has a grand total of 90 MR and 100 AR.

Idk how powerful Aatrox’s healing is but that might have been a factor.

Yasuo, with his ulti active, bypasses 50% of your bonus armor. That's the armor you get from items. With I.E., he also deals 20% true damage (bypassing armor). So that makes your all-armor build useless. Aatrox also had cleaver, which provides team wide penetration for his team.

As others have said, your build is fucking awful. Health is the most important tank stat; you need it to make the others (resists, % mitigation, attack speed slows) actually effective. You can tank decently with ONLY a big health pool, but you can't tank well with ONLY a ton of armor.

Lastly, Aatrox does a fuckton of healing against champions. If he's not the focus target in a fight (he shouldn't be; as he should be rushing in with ulti on, soaking damage but not worth killing) then he can absorb a TON of damage and heal it back. You need to either focus him fast, or else ignore and play around him. I prefer the fast focus, but that's just me.

Iota Theta3 votes

Heck, they barely had any health built. Thornmail gives I think the lowest health of the tank items and they’re sitting on a Targon’s Brace. No wonder Aatrox could survive longer. Not to mention Draven would’ve likely been better handled with a health+armor instead of Frozen Heart.

It's a support vs a top laner comparison. You can't compare it like that. It's like having a mid galio compared to a support brand and judge by their numbers at the end that galio has more damage than brand WTF rito? Also you need to focus on less expensive items when you are supporting. On another note, HEALTH is a tank stat. AATROX has 3 items with substantial HP completed when your whole build has less bonus hp than a single item of his. When you are supporting you need to buy support items because with your build you were a hot mess of nothing, No utility and no tankiness because by the time you had these items the enemy had full build. your best route IMO is item 3109 item 3800 item 3107 Also did you have aftershock combined with ITEM CDR in the secondary?
