Has tencent asked riot to kill its own game for its own future ?

MOuHahaHAhahaaaa··3 votes·2,976 views

This may seem ridiculous but we all know that every game won't last forever. Since the 100 milions active players world record we didn't get any number anymore which means the number decreased a lot.

Tencent knows that the game is old and slowly dying. Does tencent asked riot to milk this game until the last drop of $ and to slowly kill it.

Tencent bought pubg and fortnite : lol is a direct concurrent of these new games. New game means that there is a lot more $ to make from it. Killing lol and milk it until the last drop to ensure future competitor games to succeed would be logical.

As lol loses slowly players it would be logical to prepare the future of tencent which is pubg, fortnite and the new riot's game in developpment for years.

So do you think it is possible that tencent asked riot to milk out the remaining $ of lol before killing it to prepare the future ?

Only businessmen with brain damage would try to kill one of their own flagship products. And worse, kill off one of their flagship product supposedly because they have more than 1.

If Tencent is this dumb, no way they're an investment tycoon reaching across countless industries with an untold amount of businesses under their hands.

MOuHahaHAhahaaaa2 votes

The issue is that their flagship product is slowly losing clients and in the other hand new concurent products are gathering new players. Moreover lol isn't the flagship product of tencent. They own many big enterprises which are way more powerfull and profitable.

The target market of LoL and the "other products" you mentioned, are completely different demographics. What you're saying is like saying a juice company would close its doors because a soft drink is getting popular, nah man.

Secondly, Tencent does NOT run those other products the same way they do with League, because Tencent owns over 50% of shares of Riot and run the company (100% atm) but the same can not be said for Epic and whatnot (less than 50%, so they don't run those companies), so it makes no sense to kill off the product they own over something they don't to begin with.

Thirdly yes, League can be considered to be one of Tencent's flagship products. I mean a game with millions of active players at least for some time, should be considered a colossally market hit no matter how you look at it.

We have no acces of real data si we cannot state the actual success of lol. China telecoms are way more profitable than lol and other companies that tencent owns are too. Before buying the totality of a game you only buy 10-40% to be sure to not lose a lot of your wallet investiment in case of no success.

In history and in economical history you have many examples of multinationals killing their own companies and products to ensure success for future products or new raising activities or companies. It's called the cycle of productivity. After successfully exploiting a company and its products become slowly obsolete : the demand is slowly decreasing. To counter this you kill your own company and products and transfer the remaining elements in a new product or new company to reset the cycle.

Tencent bought over 90% of Riot as soon as Season 1 started way back in Feb 2011. It's very clear they only went to such an extreme and did this because they saw the extreme market potential of the game at the time. And sure enough, the game was a colossal hit and a cultural phenomenon, boasting 100 million active players per month give or take at its prime. Any attempt to say that it isn't at least one of Tencent's flagship product (or ANY company for that matter) can only be seen as an extreme and perhaps dishonest downplaying.

Only the mentally deranged hack businessmen in something like EA do stuff like that, that the company only got to this big in the first place was because they used to be actually good.

I'm sure with Tencent investing so much stuff in so many places across the entire globe and so much so they basically own the entire interweb service itself in China (just think about the size of it in comparison to a game publisher like EA), I am quite certain they are more pragmatic than EA that focuses on actually making a product good rather than sinking their own ship because they don't like it anymore.

The reality is that rich people only care about is money ethics, laws and values most of them, the don't care about this. And chinese buisnessman are the best at this...

No one is talking about ethics and whatever.

I'm telling you that on the money terms, what you're suggesting is a fail business strategy. No one sinks their own ship over a ship they only partially own and have no control over, especially not when their own ship is still doing just fine and shoulders above the rest if we want to compare it with all ships out there.

Proove me that the ship called riot is doing well according to their objectives ? Many companies improve their profits but if they havent reach expectations companies fire a lot of employees. For lol we have no numbers. LOL and riot perhaps only represents 5% of tencent profits you'd call this a flagship ? it is just the most mediatised one.

....

So if we have no numbers, shouldn't any assumption be valid and not just your particular set of assumptions?

Secondly, LoL basically created the modern free-to-play market, and brought ARTS/MOBA to the mainstream as well as starting a market trend going after it similar to how Doom, WoW, PUBG etc have all done or is currently doing (all FPS after Doom was for a time called "Doom clones"; all the MMOs that came after WoW were marketed as "WoW killer"; PUBG started the whole dog race chase for battle royale), and as I've said it at its peak had about 100 million active players per month (for comparison, WoW had about 12-15 million subscribers at its peak). What you're saying is like saying Doom wasn't a market success, and couldn't be considered a flagship product of their respective owner.

Just no.

Let me understand your logic here.

Tencent: Hello Riot Games. You have a great game. Let me buy you for millions of dollars. Riot: OK! Tencent: Welcome to the team! Riot: Thanks! We're so glad you've invested in the future and well being of League! Tencent: Now kill it. Riot: Come again? Tencent: Kill it. It competes with one of our other products. Riot: But why? You literally just dumped millions of dollars to buy us. Tencent: So? We gave an order. Kill League. Riot: ...

You would have to be an INCREDIBLY stupid business, let me reiterate, INCREDIBLY STUPID, to buy a company for millions, and then kill it's flagship product. You would have a better time just taking suitcases of money to the bathroom and flushing it down the toilet if that's how your business operates. Tencent is not trying to kill Riot. In no way in any kind of business world does that make any logical sense.

Lol isnt a flagship product... go at tencent website look at the companies they own and their profits riot is only perhaps at rank 7...

Reading comprehension is super important. League of Legends is Riot's flagship product, it's literally the ONLY REASON anyone would be interested in purchasing Riot Games. No company would dump millions on a company with only 1 product and then tell that company to kill that 1 product so that their other investments can lose a competitor. That's incredibly stupid, and a complete and utter waste of money, time, and investment. That kind of business decision would literally bankrupt the company because other stockholders and investors would pull out of a company that makes incredibly stupid business decisions like that.

The doomfuckers have been trying to blame Tencent for everything going wrong, like they're a new player in League's business world; they listen to one Sinophobic shitlord on Youtube, half-remember it, and then parrot his half-baked and ill-researched talking points ad infinitum. It hasn't even been two months since I first found the subsubsubcommunities that are actively trying to destroy League by manually sabotaging every game, either by just running down midlane, going active AFK in the fountain, or clogging up the lobby with last-second dodges.

Their own methods to destroy League don't make a lick of sense, why should their conspiracies about overseas companies?

A bit tinfoil hat overload, but honestly I wouldn't be surprised. Don't forget that Tencent owns Fortnite too, not only PUBG...

Infernape1 votes

Tencent only owns a small percentage (about 40-41%) of Epic. Tencent owns 100% of Riot.

Okay.... but what if they do? What then? What future? There's no back up, no second game, no other titles they are working on.

... that's actually a little concerning, why aren't Rio making other games? Or doing anything outside of League. At least Blizzard and Epic make other games as well.

MOuHahaHAhahaaaa2 votes

Riot has been developping a new game for years now that's why lol lost his best devs. Aka morello etc they are on a new project.

Cool, about time. Let's hope it's not a Battle Royal huh? :-P

Riot actually has a second game. It's called Mechs vs. Minions, a physical board game loosely based on the themes of LoL.

But yeah.

So rather than keep the business and game running, which generates even more revenue for them and appeals to people like me who think PubG and Fortnite can go jump in a jet turbine, they would intentionally sink one of their own sources of income to make way for the next best thing that they might not even own?

You doomfuckers are REALLY grasping for straws these days.

To shed some light on this interesting subject, Riot and Tencent have a bad blood relationship together despite what the news and things may say for one big reason, when Tencent aquired League's majority sharehold in 2011 by 70%, they wanted to turn league of legends into a mobile game and market it into the chinese market, water down the games mechanics and playability so that children could play it and add ingame currency all that stuff. Riot fought back against this and eventually Tencent had to abandon the intellectual properties of League for their mobile game and made their own under the name of "Honor of Kings", the issue was that Tencent kept all of the mechanics, champion syles, gameplay elements, and designs for the game directly from League. In the end Riot filed a lawsuit against the majority shareholder of their company for stealing intellectual property from Riot. It makes a lot of sense why Tencent may be sending League of Legends to a grave after digging deeper on this, I think they want to burn League as a PC game, and then convert it to mobile so they can market it. We have all seen all of the other failing MOBA games for mobile around made from China, they are already trying to get the idea they just dont have the name.

This may seem ridiculous but we all know that every game won't last forever.

Yeah but not many games have lasted as long as League and none of those games are as big as League is even after so long.

Since the 100 milions active players world record we didn't get any number anymore which means the number decreased a lot.

Probably, but League is still one of the most played games even now, and the most watched Esport of 2018, it's impressive to have such a big audience at It's age and you don't seem to recognize that.

Tencent knows that the game is old and slowly dying.

More like Tencent is slowly dying right now...

Does tencent asked riot to milk this game until the last drop of $ and to slowly kill it.

Why would they? League makes more money from micro-transations than any game in the world. Why milk money when you're already doing the best? Why fuck with a good formula?

Tencent bought pubg and fortnite : lol is a direct concurrent of these new games.

No, it isn't. League is a MOBA, PUBG and Fornite are Battle Royales, different genres for different audiences. If anything why buy both PUBG and Fortnite? Why not just kill one of those? They're both Battle Royales, so by your logic, they directly compete against each other, but they'll never be killed for such a bad reason, because they both make money. Why kill a game that's making you money and has it's own unique audience?

New game means that there is a lot more $ to make from it.

Untrue. Count the money League has made in it's run and compare it to both PUBG and Fortnite, and you'll see League has made more money in the long run. New Games AREN'T guaranteed to be good forever or even as long as League has been. PUBG and Fortnite look to be dying even now, I sincerely doubt they'll last as long as League.

Killing lol and milk it until the last drop to ensure future competitor games to succeed would be logical.

Like I said above, this doesn't make sense. It would actually be illogical to do something like that.

As lol loses slowly players it would be logical to prepare the future of tencent which is pubg, fortnite and the new riot's game in developpment for years.

Again, not logical at all.

So do you think it is possible that tencent asked riot to milk out the remaining $ of lol before killing it to prepare the future ?

No.
