What if there was a support who could absorb the damage an ally would take?

Basically it would be a move where he targets an ally and all damage his ally would take would be reduced by 70% and he takes the damage instead for 5 seconds?

While the support is ulting his target, he takes 50% reduced damage from the 70%. Say he would have taken 1000 damage, he takes 500 instead?

Interesting mechanic or nah?

Wasn't there a bmb item called martyrs gambit that did exactly this?

Main issue with such a mechanic is it would mostly be really unclear what's going on when fighting against it, and in most cases it would feel really weird. You unload the Tibber's combo an a marksman and watch their support, who's 600 range off, just fall over and die while their buddy remains unharmed.

You'd need a way to quickly explain and who why you're absorbing the damage rather than simply "absorbs all damage from this guy". Like Tahm physically shielding an ally in his belly or Braum intercepting projectiles with his shield.

Soraka kinda does that already tho no?

Not actively. She gives health to heal, but she isn't actively taking the damage. OP's suggestion is just that: Damage is redirected immediately vs Soraka having to heal to do so.
