Alright yall lets talk about matchmakeing.

I think with some of the huge changes coming up in 2019 we have a pretty good window here as players to get some dialogue going on what we want to see from matchmaker. Given the size of this change I am willing to bet that riots gonna be paying attention to the playerbase and how well received this is going to be. So lets start talking, lets try to build a consensus and push for some QOL improvements. I feel like the more clear we can be on this the higher the odds are of things getting implemented.

So some requests/guidelines on what id like to see if you participate in this conversation.

  1. Keep it civil. Don't say stuff like "That's the dumbest idea I have ever heard" Directly address why you think its a bad idea.
  2. Disagreement is fine, I encourage you to save downvotes for low quality posts or blatantly disrespectful ones. Echo chamber style threads discourage interaction. I want to see conversation and not a popularity contest.
  3. Take a moment to read others posts, if some one has said most of what you feel, Please Reply directly to that poster and mention the modifications you want in that reply. The more folks do this the more organized the entire thread will be, ideally the majority supported ideas will rise to the top with out the opposing views being buried under 15+ comments that all say the same thing. Again conversation > poularity contest.

To keep my bias from influencing the direction of this post to much I will put my views on what would be improvements for matchmaker as a comment to live or die on its own merit.

Alright lets talk about how you misspelled the word "matchmaking"

I misspell things frequently, even with spell check. Dyslexia can be fun like that.

good catch thou, im having a chuckle at it.

I want to see a few changes to matchmaker.

  1. Removal or higher restrictions of duoing in solo que. The range in MMR is to dam high currently for duos that it creates what I feel is a high # of badly built games. Look everybody knows that Divisions don't = a players MMR so why do we use divisions to determine if two players can or cant que up? Like we added the division thing as a limiter because unrestricted duos where an issue, I just don't think it was enough. My gut feeling is I think 300 MMR is a good cutoff but don't quote that as some magic # cuz I don't have the required information to make a accurate judgment

  2. Riots already looking at it but my suggestion to limit the ability to swap roles biased on MMR between positions. As well as to have a clear system for detection when players que for two positions but then just go play their main. My example here is that A 1400 MMR top whos 1700 mmr ADC and 1460 MMR Jungle would not be able to swap for adc when qued for top but they could for. A Duo who ques for mid and jungle, and pick the opposite and play it out either get detected for doing so by the system or have it as a reportable and punishable action.

  3. A clear expectation on if your ranked experience is a factor in matchmaker and how many games the system requires. Basically I want to see the system to have a focus on # of games played when its building teams and do its best to ensure each team is fairly not only in MMR but also # of matches and to strive to put players vs and with others near that # of games played.

  4. The ability to find out your MMR with out having to use 3rd party sites. It doesn't have to be publicly available or broadcast but speaking for myself I would enjoy knowing where the system is placing me. If there's a good reason to keep it hidden, like to prevent some kind of abuse fine but put that forward as the reason why its hidden. If its just cuz folks get discouraged, I kind of feel like they lack the tenacity to climb a Elo system and are more likely to be uncompetitive players.

Consider that The game will be built with MMR off the role they are in. They cant swap until the games built. to players can que for their 1400 roles then swap to the class they play at a 1700 level. Even if they just get penny's in MMR gains id much rather see players not destroy the quality of individual matches. Because some players will care more about winning and stomping players then they do about climbing the ladder. Giving them low MMR or even -MMR on a win does not dissuade this type of player and personally my view is its a unfun behavior and encourage attempts to stifle it.

That's my reasoning behind point 2 and my bias on the topic.

Smurfing requires a higher investment, either in time to rank to 30 then drop Or to buy an account, or to track down players who want to get boosted. To dumpster placement mmr in 2019 well This could be done on any account just by playing halfhearted on their worst champions or by playing champions really out of meta that cant turn good play into wins very easy. Then they can smurf on their mains simply by queing up with friends.

I hate smurfing, but the MMR gains tend to make it climb up ladder rapidly when its a fresh account or get a ban for intentional throws they need to keep their MMR low. The change to me enables every account be it a regular or smurf to have the ability to smurf 5 times longer due to each role being separate if we assume there's not adequate restrictions or proper punishments for abuse cases.

The abuse from role swapping is a lot easier to prevent then smurfing, you can prove they took a different role then they qued for. Its a bit more difficult to always prove some ones a smurf.

As it stands I view smurf accounts as a negative for the ranked ladder and see no reason to allow that behavior to be come easier and thus more common place. To me players intentionally disrupting the matchmakers ability to build balanced teams are a negative for ranked integrity, I don't think that's a unrealistic view to hold.

Full disclosure here i'm a guy who has smurfed a few times over the years. Typically its a response to a bottom elo friend talking shit about elo hell and how I was just lucky / don't deserve my rank for playing off meta or goofy builds, that they are better then me because they follow the meta, streamers, pro play, mobafireguides, etc etc. So I showed them what a gap in skill looks liked. Now before the que restrictions I just qued so they could see how they fair vs higher mmr players (badly and feed most games). Most folks got it pretty fast after a few games their unable to play at higher MMR because they as a player need to improve, like when your hands down the worst player match after match after match even with a buddy actively trying to help you it sinks in eventually. After that there's been 2 occasions I just used a smurf to show friends theres no elo hell. I've made a point to mention I was smurfing and offered to help any one in games mechanics if they wanted. Its not even a huge skill gap, im low to mid plat at my very best on only a small handful of champions.

I don't know, end of the day for me it just doesn't sit well knowing that when I smurf it makes a game I enjoy considerably less enjoyable for others so I avoid it.

This is only based on my experience:

-Matchmaking in normal games is terrible and I should not play against Diamonds.

-Matchmaking in ranked games is perfectly balanced in my current elo and I have 0 issues about it since I always face ppl with similar elo.

There are quite a few foundational things that matchmaking has to do before it can work.

First you have to have master accounts mapped to unique identifiers. Such as a phone number- then all game accounts, must be attached to the master.

Once this is done, you can control smurfs, boosters, trolls, everything. No one can just buy accounts without attaching them to the id anymore. It eliminates TONS of issues, without this- you can't fix the ladder.

Once this is done. Then you start all new players in bronze 5. No more promo games. Resets simply place players into the 5 tier of whatever division they were in, no promo games for anyone ever again. They are completely useless.

Now phone numbers are stored. This means that in order to have a troll account, or smurf in lower elo, you have to get a new phone number. Not impossible, but its annoying, so at least theres that.

Trolls won't be able to just buy a new account and start trolling without attaching it to something. They won't be able to use their actual phone number, because if a number is marked as troll- all accounts attached are disbanded. Trolls are eliminated, semi-permanently. Certainly far more effective than the current system. People have mentioned ips, but obviously anyone that knows anything knows you can't do that.

This may eliminate kids from the game that don't have phone, may have some struggles in other countries.. I don't know. Kids could use the house number or parents number or something. If kids aren't playing the game thats fine with me as well. They aren't target market or revenue, the parents are.

I'm sure there is a way to generate phone numbers as well, so its not foolproof. However on average it will stop the normal user.
