Any tips for a first time Dark Souls player?

I'm going to start playing through this game, and I'm looking for advice on how to level up my character. I'd like to be mostly a spellcaster/mage. Which stats should I invest in, and how much of them do I need? Also which spells do you recommend?

Just realized I posted this in the wrong section. Meant to post in general discussion. Sorry.

Okay bud, as someone who has been a huge dark souls fan boy, since Demon Souls, its first installment. Dont rush for spells, rush for a general build as it is what every person should have 1 of, which is actually supposed to be the first character you have in each game. BASICALLY be level 40 in everything. That allows you to use about 95% of all equipment and spells. Also, lets you master the mechanics while making things not as hard.

Also just to clarify this is for the first Dark Souls. Not Dark souls 2.

You do realize that by the time he gets to level 240-280 he would have already beaten the game in new game plus, right?

We're talking about a first time character not his mastery of NG+7

If you're going to go a spellcaster you have the choices of Sorcery or Pyromancy.

Sorcery scales mostly with stats. Pyromancy scales entirely with an upgraded item called a Pyromancer's flame. Sorcery has a diverse amount of spells. Pyromancy is almost entirely fire damage.

Stats for a sorcerer are mostly going to be intelligence for scaling, attunement which allows you to equip more spells, and vitality which increase your health.

Strength and Dexterity will play their part when you pick your weapon, and you will need a weapon. Endurance increases your stamina and how much your equipment can weigh so it has its uses but as a sorcerer your armor is typically going to be very light.

Faith lets you use miracles which you wont want as a sorcerer. Resistance is literally a useless stat.

For stats you want to start off by going for the soft caps.

Vitality is 30. Intelligence is 40. Attunement is 50. Soft caps are where more points invested will result in you getting less of that stat for each point.

My best suggestion is that if you've got a PS4, start with bloodborne.

  1. Dying is going to happen a lot.
  2. Don't be afraid to take risks.
  3. Don't run around with your shield up. Just use it for perfect blocks.
  4. If there's something that has your attention, you are probably going to be attacked from the side, rear, or above.
  5. Some chests will kill you if you don't attack them first.
  6. Save your item upgrades for the important items to you.
  7. A lot of people suggest starting a knight on the first playthrough for the extra armor.
  8. Falling kills enemies and bosses too.
  9. The stats you level depends on the items you use and if you cast spells or not.
  10. The lore is in the world and the item descriptions.
  11. Holy items help against undead.
  12. Don't be like dan and run around in the darkest area in the game, complaining about a lack of light, when you have a lantern in your inventory.
  13. If something is too hard, you are probably doing something wrong.
  14. A lot of challenges and obstacles can be beaten several ways.

There's a spoiler I can give if you want it.
