The new sightstones are one of the biggest disappointments of this season.

TheLittlestLulu··162 votes·4,737 views

When I heard that new sightstone upgrades were being added I thought they were gonna actually do something cool with the wards. Stuff like item 2301 wards putting a reveal on someone who kills them, or item 2302 wards leaving an un-targetable ghost ward for a few seconds when they die, or item 2303 wards taking one extra hit to kill.

Instead we just get the same sightstone with the stats of one of the support items minus the active that makes the support items worth buying.

This is the funniest and most correct point of all. What was even the point of the Eye sightstone upgrades when the upgraded sightstone was made to directly synergize even better with the other tier 3 actives on the support items.

It is like someone saying "would you rather have voltron, or just the left leg that we glued some arms to"

It's a nice idea they had implementing these alternatives, but it isn't effective in a practical sense. These items are handy because you pay a small fee to combine two required support items into one slot, saving space for another item. Problem is, Supports don't generate enough gold to make consistent use of the extra item slot, especially when actives like item 3092 are so desired in the first place.

And technically, these were the "biggest disappointment" of last season. We have plenty of new disappointments for season 6.

PokladnicaZla2 votes

I think one of the main reasons(atleast for me) is that item 2302 & item 2301 don't give any GPS,while item 2303 seems to be doing well statisticly.

The Sightstone upgrades save gold AND space. In order to buy both the active item and SS, you pay 3000 gold. The Eye items are 2200 by themselves.

The reason it's good is because you don't have to buy a full item and THEN SS before you even start on boots.

If it was just Talisman vs Eye, no question Talisman would win. But it's Talisman and SS vs Eye, unless you just want a dark map all game.

A full item then sightstone? Shit, I only need 1300 gold to get tier 2 gold gen item and SS. The same thing you buy. Then I upgrade the gold gen item for only a couple hundred more gold, because with talisman's speed or FQC's slow, you don't really need boots that quickly. And FotM has that shield! With that and Locket, you're almost Tahm Kench gray health bar on anyone.

FOTM is terrible. You can dispute the others if you like, but spending a total of 3000 gold on raw health for a tank is asking to get killed. The reason Eye of the Equinox is good is because you can start buying armor or MR much faster than if you buy FOTM and SS, which is especially important when you're laning against someone who has sustained physical damage like a marksman.

Tobias Brackner2 votes

That's all based on how you build and what champ you are using.

Catloaf7 votes

As a support main i never buy these items since they are pure garbage. Also item 3069 sucks hard.

Mister Support1 votes

It's a strong compliment to hard engage comps with many tanks, but in the meta that isn't too common. More skirmishes and poke comps than anything.

NichtHurz4 votes

Yeah, but it's quite bad regarding the items overall stats without its active counted in. It's nice to have the active, but the stats on the item don't really make it worth buying. We've got some pretty strong engage supports that are pretty popular right now and you might think that some of those would actually like to buy the item, but it's just getting outscaled quite hard.

While you are correct, that gold on thresh when your damned adc wont let you proc relic...is really game changing

XeroKimo2 votes

In early game Ancient coin also rewards a passive play style lane, no need to risk killing a minion for gold or poking the enemy for gold

NichtHurz1 votes

You're both right with that, but that's you being forced into building a statwise suboptimal item. Almost every single support will prefer item 3092 item 3401 or maybe item 2303 . If your support is somebody like Alistar, Braum, maybe Thresh or Leona they can get item 3800 to have a more reliable and stronger engage.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

I like it on Janna since I'm not gonna do much with an extra Item slot and I don't feel like I have enough wiggle room to make effective use of ice dagger's on-hit gold.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

I don't see how they are pure garbage. I like the gold I save and the extra item slot, especially in extremely aggressive games where teams are gettin gold quick or I'm a supp that doesn't really get a lot from the utility of the T3 supp item.

Jabberwöcky7 votes

Like a couple of your ideas, heres what i thought for the three items.

item 2301 Since its the "Watchers". It would be neat if someone were to run through it, and first person to run through it as an enemy, will get marked, and it will follow them for X amount of seconds out of its vision range, but does not count towards that timer, while in the wards range.

Basically, you put it down, invisible ward. First enemy that comes through, will get marked, once that said champion leaves the wards range, itll do a vision tracking of said champion for a few seconds.

item 2302 Since this is gold sight stone. For each enemy that runs through it, whoever placed the ward, will get an extra 5 gold, can not happen again for 30 seconds or so. This could be abused by laners i guess, but wouldnt be worth trying to abuse in my mind.

item 2303 This is the Tanky sight stone. Only thing i could really think of for this one, is that you get an extra amount of XP for each time someone runs into the vision range of said ward. Now i dont think it should be aflat amount, i think it should be.. you get X amount of XP over Y amount of seconds, and this can multiply if more people come into its range (only works on one champion, so Udyr cant run pat it 5 times and proc it), or even a small hp/mana regen instead of XP, to help heal you, but this could be very abusive.

I still don't understand why we need sighstone after the trinket slot got introduced...

If they want vision to be a team-oriented goal (as they have stated over and over surrounding the trinket discussion), then sightstone is a waste. All it does is make the support class less fun/interesting to play, and keeps it focused on engage/disengage. If they want supports to feel like a full class, they can't waste their precious little gold buying MORE vision for the real team members. It just doesn't make sense.

Tis a nice day4 votes

I think they implemented sightstone specifically so that supports don't waste their precious little gold buying more vision.

At least it made sense back when invisible wards were purchasable.

ModKnightsKemplar4 votes

At the time, it was great. It was a great step forward for supports, and I honestly think a lot of people expected it to solve the problems entirely.

But it didn't. As long as support has that much control over the vision game, it'll be gimped. They need to get items just like everyone else, imo. Vision ought to be a team game, and that's what trinkets are for. Sightstone is outdated. They should buff the yellow trink and get rid of it. They'll have to rebalance some things, but it'll be worth it.

Tobias Brackner2 votes

I think the problem is a numbers game. They want vision to be important but they don't want it to take over the game. Personally I don't mind playing the vision game since I tend to be more map-oriented in my playstyle but I don't think that the majority of people are.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Right, which is why they had to nerf yellow trinket after awhile. It was almost as good as sightstone. But for some reason, instead of getting rid of sightstone and calling it good, they decided to nerf of yellow trink... I still don't know why.

Yes, they needed to adjust; it was too much vision. I just don't know why they chose the path they chose.

And a new, free item slot that we can use to build more USEFUL items.

Like that Rabadons on your Lux/Karma Or a Deadman's on your Leona/Thresh Or....

Well, I guess the Coin's line has the best damn active out of all of them, really.

WadeWilson13374 votes

uh...what? Frost queens is by far the best

Tobias Brackner1 votes

Depends on how your team is playing. In terms of "dumber than a bag of rocks" then Frost Queen is the most foolproof.

Jasiwel4 votes

item 2303 is the only one I ever see. EVER.

item 2302 doesn't have the justification for buying over item 3069. Sure there's HP involved, but the Active on Talisman is 100x better.

item 2301 is 100% inferior to item 3092 and there should be no reason to EVER buy it.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

I get Eye of the Watchers on Karma cuz I want Rabadons and room for other such high-ap items. I do have a hard time getting the Ancient Coin one.

AATTRROOXX3 votes

I build item 2302 on soraka bcause after buying it+boots+item 3065 or item 3742 (AD or AP threats) +item 3083 I can get 3000 HP at level 14 due to the sightsone upgrade have 50 more health than a regular sightsone.

MrWasjig3 votes

Actually, while these are massively lackluster they aren't the biggest disappointment of the season.

Season 6 is the biggest disappointment of Season 6

Neamean3 votes

I say let make them OP, support want over power item that other wouldn't really want to abuse except for maybe jungler (no laners).

item 2303 -grant a shield area item 2302 grant a speed shrine item 2301 grant a slow shrine

I can imagine now jungler coming in for a gank drop a item 2301 behind enemies or item 2302 where the jungler is coming from or item 2303 under the adc for the shields.

Muhahahahahahahahahahaha support will be so strong muhhahahahahahahah the extra utility muhahahahaah.

But then we don't ward because we want to use for it other utility that isn't vision so it come down to strategic warding for traps or vision in fog of war.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

I do like this idea of giving wards teeth to make warding feel better to people who seem to not care at all about vision.

Athenes Lulu2 votes

Actives on level 3 gold items are too good to give up just to sacrifice for an extra item slot, which is something supports don't really need unless you are some kind of tank in most cases.

Kaeblen2 votes

I'm pretty happy with item 2303 , but item 3092 is just too good right now to take the sightstone option.

I hear there is a 3rd, but I don't think I've ever seen it.

I wonder what would happen if they introduced a item 3671 + item 2049 option.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

I like taking the sightstone option when I'm an AP supp who has really good scaling so I can have the extra slot for more AP.

Owntrolf2 votes

item 2045 This isnt even attractive

Its a dissapointment compared to the old mastery that gave 10% cdr and 20% item cdr

Ruby sightstone is only 10% item cdr

LadyRenly2 votes

Seeing an AP support build Eye of the Watchers makes me cringe so bad. Who in their right mind would build that over frost queens? I really wish they would do something about it because I don't think they are that great

Tobias Brackner1 votes

Because AP supports have good scaling? Like, Karma already has awesome engage and disengage so I would only be using Frost Queen for the vision but even then I ward. Building shittons of AP items seems like the best call.

Personal preference. As always, I feel like people don't value vision highly enough though.

If you are stressing over an item slot, you aren't playing support right, that's all I'm saying. There is no point in a game where I don't have an empty slot for a pink unless it is like 45 minutes in and I'm playing Sona (literally only Sona). Any other support won't be getting enough gold in a game to need 6 items and buying AP like you are a mid laner.

If you are worried about an extra slot that bad, go play another role because your mind is in the wrong lane to worry about that.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

It's not about stressing over an item slot, it's about wanting the extra item slot. There is 0 stress involved.

**Reveal on someone who kills it ? That suggestion is useless **

  1. It punishes you for killing wards which is sorry just dumb
  2. I already saw an Enemy killing the ward for extra seconds ll just make me feel safer for those seconds. Besides That change would create even more passive gameplay and even less ganky gameplay

Wards leaving an un-targetable ghost ward for few seconds when they die

  1. See what I think about your first suggestion

**Wards taking one extra hit to kill? ** And how much would this effect cost? because its pointless as fk.. You might aswell make it cost 100 gold I would argue that wards take to long time to kill nowdays anyway unless you are leona / renekton /lucian Useless suggestion

I really dont want even more tankier wards..

Xosra2 votes

I only ever buy the combined support items on supports who can be carries. If i am expecting a hard game with morg sup i can build the combined stones then build full ap.

Grey Fortune2 votes

When you play support and lane phase breaks early, it is fairly important to finish your first item soon so that you don't become dead weight to your team. The Item actives are a bit overrated, especially when compared to actives/passives for items like locket and Frozen heart, along with niche pickups like a Zhonya's rush on Morgana or Luden's echo on poke supports.

This is not to say that these are ideal, but they can be used to press a gold advantage, or to bandage a gold deficit.
