New Ryze strikes me as more of a support than a mid or top

Mixed feelings about this guys update i was expecting more drastic changes to the kit tbh, but this update feels alot like the malzahar mage update than a full VGU expect the new ultimate of course. I can see good plays being used with his ultimate but i do not see this guy going mid or top anymore in this meta. Without his old ultimate im not sure he will be able to execute a carry or lead like the old Ryze. So i see him becoming a support more than anything else.

I agree full heartedly. I'm a support main and when I saw this I immediately saw him as a new support mage. I plan on giving him a little and then trying it myself

He's probably going to be too dependent on his passive scaling to be a decent Mage support.

I can see him going support. but personally, for me, I feel that support is now more of an option, as that he's still pretty viable for top and mid

I feel like he's in the same place as Karma and Lux right now. A mage, but definitely a potential for mage support. So, Riot, perhaps his new Champ "types" should be Primary: Mage, and Secondary: Support.

The damage could just be baked into his basic abilities. lol; His current one is just a steroid

Is Fiora a support because she can proc Janna's healing?

Though you're right he might have support potential

but why play him support, when hes stronger on a full ap build while contributing the same utility?

a lot of supports arent played in solo lanes because they have shitty solo lane kits. leona, soraka, janna to most extent, or simply work much much better in duo lanes.

there are some exceptions like lulu and zilean.

but ryze works better on a solo lane budget without the need of a lane buddy to access his full kit.
