Now that early game mana regen is non-existent...

I've been bringing the Chogath mid back. Oh, did you harass me with your entire mana bar Mr. Mage? Let me just sustain that all back up by clearing a wave utilizing my passive while you go back to base to get that mana back.

RIP mages, hopefully Rito fixes this before season ends. I'll miss you Lux .

:( I play Anivia mid

Rush RoA and tear. Anivia has been my main since S1 and the RoA + tear build has always served me well. I never actually build chalice/grail on Anivia.

So you have to sacrifice ANY ap at all for the first ~ 15 minutes of the game to get some decent mana regen going.

I mean, Anivia is a special case... not many can burn mana like her. It's pretty sad for "combo" mages who rely on a specific combo of spells rather than sustained damage. Their choices are currently, "my combo will do zero damage because I didn't build any AP and went for RoA/Tear" or, "if I miss my one combo I'm out of the fight because I'm OOM."

That run on sentence hurts to read.

Not really. Catalyst into blasting wand. You have to remember something about Anivia's damage. All her spells have decent base damage as well as scaling. If you land both parts of Q and E right after, that is still considerable damage even with low AP.

Anivia's Q and E both can have a max of 1.0 AP scaling, Q can have a max base damage of 360 (starts at 120) and E starts at 110 max and goes up to 350 max. Your issue is in thinking that Anivia MUST build large amounts of AP in order to do any damage. This is a pretty common mind set when people haven't quite gotten used to Anivia. Her high base damage allows her the freedom to invest into a heavy mana pool early on and delay her massive damage until later.

Even with grail/chalice, Anivia's high mana cost would make you go OOM after 1 combo then you would have to wait for the mana to come back. A large mana pool will give you the ability to stay in fights longer without having to rely so heavily on mana regen.

I leaded with Anivia is a special case that has always been forced to build high mana sustain items, similar to Cassiopeia. They are both sustained damage mages, and that's not what most people are concerned about right now.

It's the burst/combo mages that are more heavily impacted. Your Lux, Brand, and Ahri's of the world. These champions simply can't compete with all the manaless/energy based champions today. Zed misses his first 4 Q's? No problem, he can keep throwing them out there. Lux misses her first three Q's? Better head back to base, you don't even have enough mana to combo your abilities anymore.

I also fixed the sentence just for you.

I also know Ahri isn't too bad currently -- her high mobility makes up for some of it, but once DFG gets removed I think she'll be thrown back into the bin of mages drowning in their own item 3070 .

Apparently the mage type class doesn't fit in line with Riot's "LC$ big playz" design philosophy that they've adopted. Sad days indeed.

Problem with this plan: Cho is not likely to be facing a mage mid these days.

Some people still foolishly have hope. What better way to stamp it out then Chogath ?

True he's quite good against assassins too.

IDK why people play him top mostly, he's far better mid IMO

Riot felt that item 3028 item 3174 was negating the mana gating that is on mages and giving them too strong of a power spike. They don't want mages to spam their spells in lane with impunity. They want you to have to think about your choices before you make them. Thankfully, there are still options. Items you can combo in order to make your mid/late game still shine. item 3040 item 3100 item 3027 item 3165

Yeah, ugh, it bothers me how true this is. It's lame being a mage that uses all your mana just csing and can't bother even trying to kill your lane opponent a lot of the time since it'd waste too much of your mana trying. I want more mana on mages again.:(
