What did the Malz rework accomplish?

Akali is SO HOT··1 votes·304 views

It looks to me like all it did was make it so you have to blow more cc on him to stop him from 100-0ing someone which was one of his important weaknesses. What new meaningful weakness does he have now? Before his rework it was mobility and CC but after the rework it's pretty much just mobility because of his cancer passive. Who thought this rework would make him healthier exactly when he has less meaningful weaknesses to capitalize on?

He's been in the top 5 winrates for both Top and Mid ever since the rework with a farily high pickrate and a high banrate. Did it do anything good at all for this champion?

Malzahar Disproves of this message. Maybe a buff where 3 minions come at a time would be nice. Methinks.

but think of those cute little pets he makes.

Would rather have the leashed old voidlings

More reliable harass-wise imo and they were able to tank/kill towers

the malzahar rework was less a case of "we have a solid way to change this for the better" and more of "this champion has a solid playstyle with clear weaknesses and strengths but doesnt match our design goals anymore so were changing him because he doesnt match our design goals anymore".

Fact of the matter is, pre-rework malzahar WAS balanced. Moving the minions to his W and simply giving them a low cooldown then giving him a passive spellblade would have been a fantastic rework. fix up some skill queing and some clunkiness in his kit while youre there and BAM. Malzahar players did well with him as an anti-assassin and farm-top. that was his niche. its WHAT he did best. the only problem we HAD with ihm was his W - a mostly useless one point wonder we used mostly for vision. We wanted THAT gone. not the champion we loved.

What we have now is just... its not fun. the power budget is to focused and WAAAY to conditional, to the point where it becomes furstrating if youre playing against a leblanc, a zed, or an azir because they just kill your minion before it does anything useful and their strength lies in quantity instead of qaulity.

Even now, his high winrate is less attributed to HIM and much more so to his auxillery support; his kit, sans voidlings, screams "im a psuedo support! my damage while high isnt a threat and my job is to lockdown so my team can kill something!".

But he didn't have a solid playstyle to being with. 100-0 someone from range while supressing them so they couldn't retaliate and forcing them to buy QSS to even have a chance is not a solid playstyle. Not to mention his stupidly good wave pushing with his E which is really hard to deal with for most champions.

If anything, the rework made his playstyle even less solid than it already was. Even with his meaningful weaknesses he was still always one of the top tier mid laners in solo q. It's no wonder that he's now always in the top 5 with a high banrate because they just made him more unhealthy and overpowered.

He could only burst someone like that when ahead. Like everyone else. Pre-rework malzahar was an Anti-assassin. Anti-assassin means he assassinated assassins and all-ins who tried to jump him. that was his niche and role. you picked him into LB, zed, riven, fiora, yasuo, and talon (to a lesser extent ahri as well). ALL assassins have 100-0 burst. ALL assassins have next to no counterplay. Malzahars playstyle was also passive due to how his kit and passive functioned. Post rework hes EVEN MORE passive because he has absolutely 0 lethality on his own. He goes even or fails miserably; people who lose hard against him fed him because they didnt understand how he worked or how stupidly easy it is to punish him.

By moving voidlings his a W and making them a low CD ability with a cap (1,1,2.2,3) and giving him a spellblade passive you CREATE a more aggressive playstyle by shifting power to things we LIKED and adding INCENTIVES to play aggressively. Theres also nothing wrong with being an anti-engage farm lane. it just means your enemy jungler needs to be on their toes, because one of malzahars BEST WEAKNESSES TO EXPLOIT was the fact he used to push like a madman as was HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE to ganks from CC junglers.

the malzahar rework had no firm idea behind it and changed the champions identity entirely. Malzahar has a single role; auxillery support. you will NEVER see him in competetive play because of it. hes a 1/10 with azir being a 5/10, where before he was a 4/10 and fit into a lot of siege or anti-engage comps.

I agree with this. Even though I never play Malz, my first thought upon seeing his rework was that he would be weak to champs like Azir or Swain, as they are dps mages and either ranged enough or tanky enough to survive/stay out of his damage. A while later, I had a one for all game as Azir against Malz. They won, but because the people who picked him(the two top and the one mid) failed miserably against him, while my sister, who had not played Azir before, did decently and I went 30/8/-. My first death was ganking another lane(I forgot that his passive would block the knockback on the ult). It was depressing and infuriating.

And such ends the rant.

100-0 someone.... they couldn't retaliate

That's no different from true cancer champs like Zed Yasuo LeeSin Riven

Whether he was better or worse before is irrelevant.

For me what really seems perplexing is the fact that his rework was easily the least necessary of the entirety of league.

Nope, malz was more unnecessary.

he really needs a few more of those pets.

Biggest gripe about Malzahar was the restrictions placed on him.

Mobility-wise

He was an immobile mage before, but even then he had one of the faster movement speed among the mages. Especially considering mages like Anivia, Orianna, Lissandra, Ziggs, etc had movement speeds of 325 versus his 340. Not a fan of reducing his movement to 335 :/

Ranged-wise

The auto attack decrease to 500 from 550 kinda sucked, but it wasn't too bad because that is really only important early game for last hitting minions since your spells weren't enough. However, his W went from being an 800 range instant damage pool to a 450 range slow build up harass that completely depends on Malefic Visions or Nether Grasp to direct them, which leads to my next point.

Spell-wise

His spells pre-rework were independently strong, literally being like semi ults (I appreciated the applications of Null Zone <3 Old Malz). The new Malzahar not only has weaker spells burst-wise, but they have to be combo'd. I used to be able to use every spell whenever the fuck I wanted.

Now Q has to be used to extend E for damage. The Silence is hurt a lot by tenacity now due to being 2 seconds instead of 3. The damage of Q by itself is a joke late game (You used to be able to siege towers and remove 40+% health from enemies that stepped too far forward of their towers with just your Q

Now W forces you to use Voidlings despite them giving like 12 gold each. They can't even tank towers now, which completely defeated the purpose of AD Lane Malzahar (Pushing Towers at the speed of Light)

Now E has to be combo'd with Q, W, or R to have any damage and can't even kill minions on its own. It also has reduced mana regen early game versus his need to use more mana for more spells per wave... RIP Sustain

Now R has lost its squishy killing potential by itself and forces you to have Null Zone with it because people apparently couldn't land an instant cast pool with Nether Grasp according to Riot. I attribute that to natural selection though.

Speaking of Null Zone...

I miss being able to damage minions with it to help E bounce early game while at the same time damage an enemy laner because they happened to wander into the minion mob to last hit.

I miss being able to catch people who tried to run away since Null Zone was an 800 range instant cast spell and Rylai's Scepter was one of Malzahar's staple items.

I miss being able to place the pool wherever the fuck I needed to place it in a team fight while at the same time being able to still cast the other two spells. Now I'm forced to protect my adc with both my pool and suppression

After two Years of trying to master old Malzahar until this random ass rework, I am now a Veigar main.
