@Riot, Idea for handling DC's for Season 5

HEY GUYS.

I have an idea for how to deal with players who have disconnected from a game. The idea hasn't been fully fleshed out yet and is still just a thought, but I feel like this could greatly improve team morale when a teammate disconnects only to never come back.

The idea is actually quite simple; we could implement a button on the client that's similar to the current "Watch Now" buttons, or an option when queuing up for any form of game that, instead of sending a player to a matchmaking queue, sends them to another screen similar to the current Custom Games list screen. Here, all games with DC'd players (who have been inactive for maybe five or so minutes at least) would be displayed.

Each game displayed would show some statistics about the game, such as team kills, the champion that DC'd, and maybe that champion's KDA and possibly build. From there, anybody could simply connect and take over that champion for the rest of the game. Of course, these games could be restricted by matchmaking so you don't have one-sided substitutes throwing the game in either direction.

While not all games might not be filled, many games would definitely go from being 4v5 or even some 3v5s back to 5v5. Even if the substitute is behind on some gold or kills or levels, I know I personally am always relieved when a teammate reconnects, even after fifteen minutes of being DC.

I'd be super happy to hear everybody's thoughts and help me brainstorm! :)

I've seen this system in a game called Guns of Icarus and it's a good system in that game. Problem here is that Guns of Icarus is full of actual people (in other words, non-trolls). I feel like in this game the system would be haunted by trolls and your 3v5 into a 5v5 is in reality a 3v5 into a 3+2feedersv5.

...The one thing is what if the player came back? Sometimes my computer drops to 0% and shuts down, and then it definitely takes more than 5 minutes to reconnect (I play on a mac like a bronzie :^)) I could see problems with a reconnection, and then the player who decided to play for the DCed player would have to be kicked out of a game where he played for 5-15 minutes, and for whom his personal LP would be on the line.

Keep trying OP, I like the idea, but it is too rough to become a usable implement in current games.

My original thought would be to basically end the game for you and make you requeue into a new game. If it takes more than five minutes for you to reconnect because you didn't have a battery, that's not the team's fault. At least, that's how I would have the client handle the problem.

Of course this leaves the possibility of people simply dropping out of the game when they get frustrated, but maybe leaving ranked games like that could incur some sort of LP loss. Of course, once a substitute fills in, it's not really your LP on the line but his (although maybe to a lesser extent since that team is at a disadvantage).

Of course, the possibility of trolls exists, but then again, trolls are everywhere, and that's why we could make the substitute take a share of the LP gain/loss based on the game rather than keep it the original player's responsibility. The same system works very well on other games like GoI (like stated) and Team Fortress 2. A player on a team drops and another can substitute in as that class immediately.

Yeah, at this point I'm just brainstorming and trying to create a polished idea I could submit to the Big Cheese. I posted this as it crossed my mind.

Could just make it so after 5 mins of a DC, the game is not recorded and is safe for everyone else to leave. This is done on DOTA2 and it tends to work very well.

The problem with this sort of idea is that when a team is losing, one person can DC and nobody else is penalized. Somebody could easily just say "this game isn't doing well, so I'll quit and it's okay for everybody to leave."
