Why can onelifesteal when the damage wasnt applied?

The Deckowner··150 votes·5,885 views

So i was playing Kayle mid last game, and was 1v1ing a MasterYi , i exhausted him and i ulted myself and i think i had the easy kill, but what happened was the MasterYi was gaining hp during auto attacks even when i ulted myself!

He was doing no damage to me and he was lifestealing off from doing no damage? what life is he stealing from? WTF?

Is dis a bug or something?

The way Kayle's invincibilty works, she still takes damage, but it just isn't applied to her HP

weeaboomer39 votes

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think I ever notice lifestealing back any hp as an adc vs a kayle before.

Crett18 votes

I might be thinking of Tryndamere's ult

TallyZrg16 votes

Kayle's Ult is Invincibility (take 0 dmg while active)

The problem with Kayles Ult is that it still tracks the amount of damage (and effects - this is the important part) that happen to her, but when the Ult is active her health doesn't decrease.

The reason her ult needs to track effects is because part of the counterplay to Kayle's ult is so that you can CC the person that has it still.

I think Riot should negate some effects from happening while the shield is on (lifesteal especially) and redo how it tracks dmg, since Zed can ult Kayle, do his full combo on her and if Kayle was low enough from a previous skirmish die from the "pop" dmg because it was all tracked even though it did no dmg to her. Also tanked turret shots will be at a higher value after the ult wears off, even though you didn't take any dmg previously.

Edit: Removed my remark about Tryndamere's ultimate, I was wrong. Also I didn't want to see the same reply over and over. (see below for what I mean)

The turret shots make sense to increase in damage (thematically and perhaps gameplay-wise) because they don't ramp up per damage dealt but per shot taken on the target, meaning that even if that shot isn't doing anything the turret is still "warmed up". The Zed ult thing is definitely stupid though.

TallyZrg1 votes

Good point on the towers. That does make more sense thematically.

To be fair, IIRC, Zed's ult still does a flat amount of damage, plus a bonus % based on damage applied during the debuff; so this is technically working as intended

Bladeglory19 votes

plus a bonus % based on damage applied during the debuff

Yeah, the flat damage can still go through (if Intervention has finished) but I believe his point was that Zed still gets this damage amp based on the damage he didn't do during Intervention, which is frustrating, to say the least.

4th3t0s9 votes

Yeah, that's bullshit; agreed there.

Back when item 3715 still did true damage on every auto, you could use it to kill Tryndamere during his Ult. I'm guessing this is a bug on the same level, since Kayle hadn't really seen a lot of play until after the changes to sated devourer.

Mama Soraka8 votes

Actually that's not true. You could kill him because it was accidentally set to PURE damage instead of true which is the same damage the base laser deals. That's why the base laser ignores trynd's ult, guardian angel, etc.

Joe Dredd1 votes

They're different. Kayle makes damage taken 0. Tryn takes full damage but health can't fall under 1

this is true, it also makes zed ult more dangerous than it seems against her.

I have lost to tryndamere many times because i couldn't lifesteal during his ult

Yeah, exactly this. I typically can't lifesteal against Kayle or Trynd when he ults and is at 1hp (if he has more than that then yes the LS works)

VasilisGreen1 votes

Well, on kayle, it makes sense, she is invulnerable but on trynd... his body actualy still takes damage so you should still get lifesteal back, it would make sense... but in game, if they are not taking damage, you arent getting lifesteal and that also applies to shields

DeathBurst1 votes

Spaghetti code for the win.

Tbh, I think this should be considered as a bug, and fixed, but thanks for the technical details.

idk if its a bug or not, but if it's not a bug than it's the same reason that you can life steal off wards, life steal apparently isn't affected by how much damage you actually do, just how much damage you should do after armor/mr(for corki). so you lifesteal the same amount from a 1 hp minion as a 100 hp minion

DorkunedAuras1 votes

You do lifesteal the same amount regardless of target's actual hp to steal.

Rikari3 votes

Because its based on the amount of damage they deal,ie the damage a person dishes out, regardless of if the person loses it or not. http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Life_steal PS: Graves gets 3x lifesteal due to 3 bullets hitting enemies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksK5KjYoJpo

Ultraboomer11 votes

Life steal is calculated from the actual damage done to an enemy, after armor and all other forms of damage reduction. All champions have 0% base life steal. It can be increased with items, runes, masteries, and some champion abilities.

second paragraph of the wiki page you linked.

Rikari2 votes

Life steal is an offensive stat that restores health to the wielder for a percentage of all on-hit physical damage** they **deal

first line. of the wiki page i linked. you can look at this two ways. 1: amount of damage output by the user 2:amount of damage taken by the receiver

its clear which is applied.

T RexHasTinyArms5 votes

The existence of the first line does not negate the existence of the second paragraph. While it is clear what is currently applied, the wiki does not reflect this because the wiki does include that second paragraph. Either the wiki needs to be edited (even if it is just to add something like "effects which prevent receiving damage but not the dealing of damage, ie invincibility, do not reduce the calculation of life steal in the same manner as armor or mr"), or the issue is an error in how the game operates currently.

Rikari2 votes

The word "dealt" is based on a perspective. Given out ie "they dealt cards" or taken in "i was dealt cards". The phrase "they deal" focuses on the lifestealer dishing out damage with the word "They". "Done to an enemy" also focus on damage the enemy has taken. If you still arent convinced, then,Likewise the second paragraph does not overshadow the existence of the first.

Truly humorous how you (all) down voted me for sharing correct, proven, in effect information. Shooting the messenger. Proves that these boards have nothing but immature players. Information you dislike, despite how many of you there are,is still correct information. Popularity does not mean shit. I bet if you (again all) liked oranges and I apples i'd get down voted for stating that, therefore in your eyes apples would be wrong due to popular belief. Down vote all you want, life steal still gonna be triggered on wards for the damage the user puts out.

T RexHasTinyArms3 votes

Eh, I think it is more of a "the wiki is ambiguous so it would make as much sense for yi to ls through kayle ult as it would for him to not" and you presented one side is first paragraph while ignoring the contradiction of the second. Even if it wasn't your intention to ignore the contradiction, by asserting the validity of one half and ignoring the contradiction you come across as selecting only for self justification. I might not disagree with your point enough to down vote you bc it has some validity, but in the interest of perspective I'm gonna point out that it is only one side of the issue.

VasilisGreen1 votes

The key word here is Deal Damage dealt is the part of damage that is applied to their hp bars, not your damage output. Damage dealt is the exact same thing with the damage taken from the other side... If i hit you and you take 100 damage then i dealt 100 damage to you.

The words used are very precise.

Rikari1 votes

the phrase used is "they deal"

Life steal is an offensive stat that restores health to the wielder for a percentage of all on-hit physical damage they deal,

damage an enemy has been dealt? doesn't seem so.

http://www.verbix.com/webverbix/English/deal.html

Life steal is calculated from the actual damage done to an enemy

damage an enemy has taken?nope.

http://www.verbix.com/webverbix/English/do.html

just keep downvoting. riot gives two shits about your thoughts. proves a nice point too

VasilisGreen1 votes

Why are you posting grammar here? what should i see? i already know that stuff... Did you even understand my comment? Did you pay attention to the "Reading comprehension" part of the english lessons in school? i guess not... Looks to me that you don't even know your own language...

damage an enemy has been dealt

this very sentence isn't correct anyway...

damage an enemy has taken

at least this one is correct. Still you seem to not understand what i said.

"Damage dealt" and "Damage taken" are exactly the same thing from 2 different points of view. "Damage dealt" is for the one hitting and "damage taken" is for the one being hit. For fuck's sake you are american and you don't even know the language you speak daily... i can only assume how good you did in school or what is the quality of education there... Seriously, it's sad...

Rikari1 votes

no,they really aren't. damage dealt is the stat multiplier as in ad or whatever. damage taken is that damage minus whatever defensive stat you use. for ad its armor. Its the same thing yes from two different perspectives. the word "They" is what I'm trying to focus on. guessing intervention counts as some untouchable armor stat. Its also highlighted in the ult as it "renders them immune to damage". Damage is still given, just not taken. Looks like you didn't comprehend that. I was also taught British English compared to their American English. Why do you assume I'm wrong? I got the second best grade in English, second to a perfect score. Then again it would seem as you figured why i didn't get the perfect score. Why do you assume I'm American? NA is just the closest. Next you'll be expecting me to measure temperature in kelvin, distance in miles, and call rugby football.

VasilisGreen1 votes

You seem to confuse the damage output with the damage dealt here. I will use my own stats on zed as an example here since i know those stats by heart.

So, i get 418 bonus AD on zed and my Q has 100% bonus AD and 235 bas damage. So, with that in mind my Q will do 235+418=653 points of damage. I will keep the calculations simple here because i am too lazy to use a calculator and i might forget something and so i will not take into account any form of bonuses from masteries or whatever other buffs. So, that 653 value is the raw damage output of one single Q. Now, if they have lets'say 100 armor and you have no armor pen, their damage reduction is 50%. So, your Q will Deal 326 damage instead of the raw value of 653. So, your damage output is the raw value of 653 but the damage dealt in this instance is 326

So, in the example of the lifesteal, no matter your damage output, no damage will be dealt to kayle because, as you correctly stated, she is immune to any form of damage and therefore she will take no damage. So, in that moment, you will the damage dealt will be 0 while your damage output might be whatever it could be depending on your build.

Now, i assumed you are american because you play on NA and unless you like lagging, which i really doubt, you wouldn't be anywhere else other than the U.S or Canada.

About perfect scores, i got perfect score in english in all written tasks but fucked up big time in the Essay and in speaking, i got really really nervous, pardon me, i was 14 :P

If you've seen any other of my posts, you would know by now, my essay skills are worse than the worst... I barely passed the essey exam... ye, i feel bad about it but don't care to change it either, it's not my native language anyway, i only use it to post on the boards and when i watch movies and in game to chat...

And no, i don't expect you to measure distance in miles and call rugby football.... btw... how do they even think this thing is football? Do they even kick that thing that it also isn't a ball? So, if not from the US or Canada then... where? you said NA is the closest to you so..

Bloodhawk953 votes

Same also happens for wards. Why should doing 1 damage to a ward heal a vayne for 150 hp?

Lifesteal is life gained for hitting enemies.

You are hitting Kayle, she just is in a state where she cannot take damage.

Lifesteal is life gained for hitting enemies.

You are hitting Kayle, she just is in a state where she cannot take damage.

You're mixing up lifesteal and life on hit, life on hit is life gained for hitting enemies, lifesteal is life gained for damaging enemies.

(Not sure if this is still a thing but....) There was a time(or still is a time) where people steal life from a ward, a small little unliving sentinal that is NOT LIVING, so you can't possible life steal off it, but people still could(or can)

I have seen this, but the amount seems smaller than if you are damaging a champion.

you're literally lying, it's specifically coded so that you cannot lifesteal from her, you CAN lifesteal from tryndamere, because his life is "going negative"

you're either confused, lying, or experiencing a bug.

GenghisEmo2 votes

Yes, just how it is coded that zhonyas makes your eneny invulnarable and they still die while in zhonyas. Seen this a lot.

Noticed it happens more to fizz. Seens ignite or a DoT ability kill em off. Best thing when killing a fizz XD.

The only way I have seen someone die in zhonya's is from the fountain laser, which is Pure damage.

Maybe they r lagging, their pc Sucks.

I have never, ever, EVER seen someone die in zhonya's, except when they aggressively fountain dive, and I think it's supposed to ignore zhonya's if it's already locked on to you (though it won't acquire you it wasn't locked on when you zhonya'sed

Fizz's troll pole doesn't make him invulnerable, it makes him untargetable. He will still be hurt by any dots or tethers on him. You are only hurt in Zhonya (which does make you invulnerable) by the aforementioned fountain laser. You will still have dots and what not on you after Zhonyas unless they expired though.
